The Mills House Charleston, nestled in the heart of Charleston's historic district, is lauded by many for its superb location, enabling guests easy access to the area's attractions. Reviewers consistently applaud the wide array of amenities, including a pool and dining options, along with commendations for the professional and friendly staff.

Hotel's Favourite
Loved everything about the Mills House Hotel. Beautiful courtyard. Great, reasonably priced coffee house, nice (expensive!) bar. And HEAVENLY bed. Room and were smallish but adequate. Housekeeping was exemplary. VERY friendly employees - everywhere. Yes, hotel is on the expensive side but the amenities, staff, location are fantastic. Very happy with our September 2024 night stay. HIGHLY recommend.

We arrived at the Mills House around 330pm, where the valet was quick and courteous. They also allow you to request your vehicle online which is great because you can have the car waiting for you by the time you come down even when busy.
The hotel is very modern and boutique styling and when we arrived it happened to be their happy hour time where they handout Champagne, which was very good.
We had a room on the 6th floor overseeing the city, which was clean and beautiful. The room was black and white styling, with comfortable beds, large 55in television which swivels. The room had 4 drawers for clothes and one drawer which was the fridge (pull out drawer fridge). The fridge was the only thing I found odd, but I was still able to utilize to hold our drinks.
In the bathroom which was also black and white was very clean and modern. They provided, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, qtips, mouth wash, makeup remover, cotton balls and plenty of towels.
In the hallway they have a rehydration center where they provide water, ice, and both water and ice.
The pool is on the second floor, they have a bar next to it which was very expensive. I had two margaritas with fortaleza and with tip came out to about 58 dollars, that's crazy, especially that it was a pre mix. There are plenty of towels before your enter the pool. The pool does get deep but I didn't venture out in the deep end because of my kids.
The food is decent at the black door but at iron rose the food there is excellent. I wish I had enough time to eat there again, the crab fritters (?), were so delicious. We also had the pickled shrimp, watermelon salad, kettle chips, oysters, few cocktails (which was less expensive than the pool??? And tasted much better than the pool)and butterscotch dessert. I really enjoyed everything, it was light and fresh which is much needed after the very hot days.
Overall, I will absolutely be back, they were too nice and the housekeeping kept everything in stock and were very helpful throughout our stay.

Booked two of the smaller suites to celebrate my sister's milestone birthday. From the time we arrived until we checked out, the staff was so attentive and helpful from the check-in desk to the servers for breakfast to the room cleaners. The room was always spotless after a cleaning and the rooms were so quiet since they were located on a corner. We all enjoyed the breakfast at the restaurant each day and spending time at the bar. I would recommend this hotel to anyone considering Charleston. It was in the perfect location, walkable to most everything within the city, and the stay exceeded all our expectations.

We spent 3 nights at the Mills House last week for a long weekend to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Our stay was fine overall, but there were a few issues with housekeeping. Our room was turned over each day in the sense that the bed was made and towels were exchanged. No glassware, dirty dishes, or trash were taken away from the first day until we left on Sunday afternoon. We also did not have coffee pods for the in-room Keurig. We called one day and were able to 2 brought to the room. The next 2 days we were told by housekeeping that they didn't have any or only had decaf. We just felt like for the price point of this hotel, there would be more attention to detail and a higher premium placed on service. Outside of that, the property is nice, was well decorated and festive for Christmas, and is in a great location for walking to just about anywhere in downtown Charleston.

I showed up at the Mills House at roughly 11pm with my wife and son and here is what transpired:
- Valet garage was full, was told to self park in the garage adjacent to the hotel - left my wife and son to take our things into the lobby to wait for me to check in
- Lugged my bags from the garage to the lobby where I attempted to check in...after waiting for a large group of folks all check in and head to their rooms.
- I was told to wait as they "checked on our room before giving us the keys". This was a flag obviously, at 11pm our room should be ready.
- Desk attendant returned to let us know that not only was our room not ready, but in fact the hotel was entirely unavailable. Was told the hotel was oversold, and "this happens frequently." which made me feel zero better...as I stood there with my wife and son looking at me for where we would be staying.
- Was told to go get my car, put our stuff back in and head to the Bella Grace Hotel about 5 minutes away and they would "take care of us".
- I was not given a name of someone at the hotel, any description of the type of property, type of room, etc.
- We found the new hotel, couldn't find where to park...ultimately ended up using the valet there for $53 a night.
- We were able to check in and got a very small room with 2 beds.
Additional background:
My room was paid in full prior to arrival. We arrived the day of our reservation only to be told we didn't have a room...after standing in the lobby for the better part of a half hour. This reservation was booked (and my card was charged) on 02/03/2025.
The reservation showed up in my HHonors app, we had a valid reservation.
We were checked in. My card had already been swiped for incidentals on the room.
This was not an inexpensive reservation that I had paid for. The total charge for the night was $1,043.29 after taxes and fees. I guess in the eyes of the Mills House, that isn't enough... Where I come from a $1k a night hotel room should beget a little better service than that.
What I’ve learned after looking at the hotel’s ownership group, Davidson, is that both the Mills House and the Bella Grace (where I was re-routed) are in its portfolio of properties. Therefore by overbooking a prepaid reservation like mine at the more desirable property, I can easily be turned away and made to stay at the lesser cost property. Pretty ingenious way to maximize revenue for Davidson, having me pay $1000+ for a $559 room, and leaving me little other choice on a Valentines / Holiday weekend in Charleston at 11pm. Good job maximizing occupancy at the more expensive property!
Oh yeah, and I'm HHonors Gold...so loyalty doesn't matter at the Mills House.
I have not yet seen a refund for my room, I was given a menial amount of Honors points (which may get me the type of room I paid for at an off peak time at a lesser hotel)

It was a perfect stay. So refreshing to have daily service of the room again. The beds were made daily, a fresh supply of towels and trash bin emptied. Too many hotels no longer do this since the pandemic. Beds were very comfortable and plenty of pillows. Staff was friendly and helpful. Restaurant and cafe food very good and service timely.

The hotel is a beautiful hotel in the heart of Charleston. This was the location for 3 days of meetings that we had. The room was beautiful and the view I had faced the ocean. The bed was very comfortable with excellent pillows. The tile work in the bathroom was awesome. We were also able to have our breakfasts and lunches at the hotel as well as refreshments throughout our meeting time and all of it was delicious. I did eat dinner one evening in the restaurant, though the prices are high for someone who comes from an economically challenged area, they are in line with the prices of restaurants in the area. My dinner was delicious as well. I love the security feature of having to use your room key to be able to use the elevator. My only negative would have to the ice/water machine. To get water from it was very hard to do. I did like the fact that they had glasses (actual glass) by the machine for you to get ice water to drink.

The Mills House is a beautiful historic hotel - renovated lovingly by The Hilton and is in a prime location within walking distance to nearly all the main sights and sounds in Charleston, SC.
Just a few blocks from Rainbow Row, the waterfront, the City Market, King Street, and dozens and dozens of restaurants and walking/horse tours.
We really enjoyed our stay. The lobby is stunning as is the lobby bar and outdoor patio.
Our room was cozy and well-appointed and surprisingly soundproof for a room facing the main road below... seems they've gone to some pains to try to minimize the sounds from the street which was appreciated.
Would happily stay here again.

The hotel's location is perfect to see many of the popular historic sites. City is very walkable. Once we parked our car when we arrived, we never used it again until we left. We did use a Lyft several times, as the locations we were headed to were too far a walk for me in high heels. The hotel staff is exemplary. Friendly, professional and helpful. They were the best part of our hotel stay. The hotel's outside lounge/pool area is lovely. Unfortunately, it was rainy and very cold for most of our stay; so, we didn't get to enjoy that amenity. We did not dine at their restaurant, so I cannot comment on that. The hotel lobby is also very pretty. The room we stayed in was nothing special. The bathroom fan didn't work. We did ask for someone to come take a look at it; but, we never saw them. If they came when we weren't there, the problem didn't get fixed. So, one star off for that. Given the room pricing, I can only assume it's because of the location. There is a parking lot behind the hotel on Queen Street with a breezeway that leads to the hotel. That was convenient. Parking in that lot is $20/day. If you prefer valet parking, the charge is $59/day.

Stayed here Wednesday-Saturday with my boyfriend and while the location is awesome for exploring Charleston this hotel has AWFUL service for being a $500+ a night hotel. Upon check in I was told I could not add my Hilton rewards number to the reservation and only purchases in the hotel would count. No one greeted us or helped us with luggage. The front desk employees told us the wrong time for when the street parking meters require payment. The next day we were out of our room all day except from 2-4pm, when the housekeepers came we told them to come back later and they never did. Then on Saturday morning housekeeping was pounding on our door at 9am. I also saw a housekeeper knock and enter a room with a do not disturb sign hanging on the door. The rooms are small and only has one towel rack that is part of the shower door and one two hooks right next to each other. The doors to the hotel were also open to the public after 11pm. For the price of this hotel stay at any other pricey hotel in Charleston.

In October 2024, it was $36/day.
There is a parking garage right next door.
There is a side entrance off the lobby where you can stand on the sidewalk to smoke. I am not aware of any spaces within the hotel; the Mills House is on the Historic Register and besides being almost 200 years old, it has a deep history of events that shaped our nation. No one would want to risk destroying a building so steeped in our heritage.
