Hotel's Favourite
Two weeks before Christmas my daughter, sister-in-law and I spent four delightful days in Charleston. Our stay at the Spectator was a highlight for days of exploring the open air market and shops, visits to museums and meals at superb restaurants. We were only a short walk from the market, restaurants on Market and East Bay and Queen and Meeting Streets, the Gibbes Museum of Art, historic churches and many activities.
From the afternoon we checked in until departure, every person we met was warm, welcoming and dedicated to ensuring that guests were comfortable and happy.
David, Chuck, Jim, Michelle and especially Darryl, who made my late husband feel like a very special pampered guest, were all outstanding. The ladies who took care of our sparkling rooms always had a smile and a friendly word. We had many questions about places to eat, sightseeing and activities, and the doormen provided a wealth of information.
For the visitor who believes that the hotel of choice is an important part of a trip's success, we highly recommend the Spectator. Beautiful lobby area and bar, lovely and comfortable rooms and outstanding people all combine to create a truly memorable experience.

We decided to stay at the Spectator during our first trip to Charleston based on location. The location was exceptional. Walking distance to all the restaurants, historic sites and waterfront. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived and was introduced to our butler who would be able to assist us during our stay. Dustin did a great job telling us all about our room, the hotel, and he recommended some restaurants. There was a stocked fridge with sodas, waters, ice coffees, cold teas that came included in our stay. There was also a basket of yummy snacks that were also included and refilled as needed throughout our stay. All the food items were clearly labeled which was important since my son has a nut allergy. My son enjoyed the gummy bears. Each evening we returned to the room to find two liquor shots in chocolate shot glasses waiting for our arrival. I was told they can also provide non alcoholic shots if requested. Each evening, you are provided a card to check off which complementary breakfast you would like delivered to your room in the morning. The completed card would be left on your door knob the night before. During our stay, we were able to try each option and they were all very good. There were heated bath towels, toilet wipes and umbrellas available for your use. The room was clean and nicely done. There was attention paid to detail. The hotel was pricey but we felt it was worth it based on the added amenities. We had an fantastic stay and will be back. Highly recommend.

We stayed 2 nights in a king room with balconette (top floor) at the Spectator and were really impressed with the experience. The service was fantastic -- everyone was cheerful, helpful, warm and welcoming. We enjoyed the included extras, such as complimentary breakfast, snacks, non-alcoholic drinks and a welcome cocktail. Even though the hotel is in a central downtown location, the room was extremely quiet (and we are very light sleepers!). We walked to all the locations we wanted to see -- historic houses, the waterfront, etc. Highly recommend if you are looking for a boutique hotel.

My girlfriend and I took a quick weekend trip to Charleston on a steamy July weekend, and from the beginning, the Spectator provided quality and thoughtful hospitality service. Prominent from the start was our butler Jim, who provided enthusiastic and thorough recommendations for our stay and brought us anything we needed, from sunscreen to towels, and some things we didn't even realize we needed, like insect repellant wipes. David also provided fabulous butler service when Jim was not available, and housekeeping in general was responsive and attentive, treating us like a guest and not a chore.
Along with the great hospitality, the room itself was beautiful, with a great shower and bathroom, comfortable bed, and delicious snacks and drinks. The free breakfast, while curated, was delicious and again delivered by Jim with a smile.
We did not actually drink at the bar but we hung out for a bit and it was a beautiful, speak-easy style place that was making what looked like delicious drinks. The bartender came over to us to see if we needed anything, but we were too full from dinner that night.
Overall, as a NYer who has stayed at 5 star hotels across the world, the Spectator held its own as a beautiful and elegant space with an incredible location in the heart of downtown Charleston, and buoyed by exceptional staff. If we ever return to Charleston, I cannot think of staying anywhere else.

The location: in the middle of the French Quarter, means that all the top restaurants in Charleston are within easy walking distance. The staff: the friendliest and most helpful anywhere, from the parking valet to the Butler who delivers breakfast to you in bed, to the barmaids and the front desk clerks. The room, on the third floor, was quiet, despite the fact that foot tourist traffic is just a block away. It was also clean (sheets are changed every third day unless requested sooner) and spacious, with lots of drawers and shelves and hangers for clothing. Double sinks in the two-queen rooms, and a walk-in shower with a no-slip floor big enough for two. We're already thinking about our next stay.

As northerners, we are always so spoiled with the hospitality of Charleston when we visit, but our recent stay at the Spectator blew us away. It’s in a convenient location, that was within walking distance to everything we wanted to see and do downtown. The hotel is really beautiful and clean. Every single staff member is delighted to help you. The accommodations are modern and very comfortable. The bathroom was spacious for a hotel and the heated towel bar is a nice bonus. A delicious complimentary room service breakfast included in the price made our stay a good value… and we also were happy to partake in a welcome cocktail to kick off our get away! We have previously stayed elsewhere in Charleston, but will be coming back to the Spectator from now on as our favorite hotel in town!

Firs time staying at The Spectator. While the service is very good, the rooms need a bit of TLC in terms of maintenance - wood trim on doors and cabinetry showing some knicks. The breakfast was quite mediocre (in particular, the eggs, coffee, etc). We have stayed at the Loutrel and French Quarter Inn and feel they were better maintained properties. The bar/lounge is nice.

Dear Linda, Greetings from The Spectator Hotel here in downtown Charleston! Thank you for taking the time to write this candid review of your inaugural stay in our luxury boutique property. We appreciate all feedback, both positive and negative, and are pleased to hear that you enjoyed our lounge/bar area and found our service to be of a high standard, as these are areas that we focus on. However, we are saddened to see that you were disappointed with your room and also with our complimentary breakfast as for most of our guests, these are the high points of their stay and your comments are not the norm. I apologize if we didn't meet your expectations, and please do not hesitate to get in touch to discuss your issues further in the hopes that we can restore your faith in our property. I have stayed in over a dozen hotels in Charleston and they are all quite good. Having just stayed at the Spectator I consider it the best of those. For starters, the building, in and out, is attractive. We had a butler, Michele, who provided very personalized service. Unlike some hotels who charge $5 for a bottle of in-room water, the Spectator provides soft drinks and tasty snacks at no additional charge. The rooms are very comfortable and well-appointed. What overwhelmed me was their personal attention to my wife and me. They extended two favors to us while we were there, one minor, one huge, both thoughtful. Those favors were unrequested but given because they paid attention to us and saw an opportunity and seized it. In my 78 years and hundreds of hotels I have never had that level of personal care from a hotel.

This hotel is overpriced and overrated. As worldwide travelers we thought this was a can’t miss hotel based on its raving reviews. But not for our two nights. Our overpriced room was small. The bathroom was nearly as large as the room. The so-called “butler” service is a joke. They’re bellmen/bellwomen. This is the ONLY hotel that charged me, $10 per night, to charge my Tesla in their $38 a night parking lot. That’s an outrage. They promote “room service breakfast” because they cannot accommodate breakfast if eight people showed up downstairs. The breakfast choices are uninspired and the egg choice is inedible. The front desk personnel is hit n’ miss. Some are what they should be – friendly, helpful. Others keep their heads down and/or hide in the office. We left the room at 730 am one morning and asked if the room could be cleaned by 2 pm. It wasn’t. The morning of checkout, and we’re on the fourth floor, the elevator is not working. We have physical restraints that preclude us carrying the suitcases downstairs. When I called, the unfriendly, unhelpful clerk said, “yah, it’s broken. I’ll send someone up when they have time.” I then ran into an employee walking on the floor who told me about a service elevator and he took all of our stuff down. The clerk/receptionist said nary a word about it. We have choices when we travel, and this hotel is more expensive than several Charleston options. This hotel clearly does not warrant what we paid. I for one will advise my friends to never stay here.

Dear "DuaneSandul", Thank you for taking the time to share your comments regarding your recent stay with us. I am disappointed to hear that you were unhappy during your visit overall. Please allow me to sincerely apologize for failing to deliver exceptional service and falling short in meeting your expectations. We did recognize a potential safety concern with our guest elevator and did need to shut it down for a couple of hours as we worked to get it repaired later that day. I do apologize that our team didn't properly communicate with you on this instance and for other times during your stay. Your feedback is very important as it helps to guide us to continually improve ourselves, as I can assure you that your experience is not the norm. We do hope that you reconsider and thank you for your time sir. Best regards, Carlo Carroccia General Manager

Dear Atomicat,
Thank you so much for reaching out to us! We do have gluten free, dairy free, and vegan options available as part of our inclusive breakfast. As we are in a peninsula, parking options are limited. That said, depending on the size of your vehicle, we have covered parking or outdoor parking - all valet parking areas are safe.

Dear "Brenda H",
Providing a tip or gratuity is always appreciated in the hotel business and never expected. Our butlers perform a variety of personalized services for hotel guests, so you may choose to provide a tip for each service, or a total amount at the end of your stay. Resources such as TripAdvisor and Emily Post Institute provide travel/resource guides that list specific dollar amounts that are appropriate. However, feel free to be as generous as you like, if you feel that the service you have received is worthy of it. I hope this information is helpful!
Best regards,
Carlo Carroccia

We tipped him at the end of our stay and I think we gave him a few hundred. He was excellent and was very attentive.
Dear Kelli T,
As a smaller boutique hotel, we unfortunately do not have a pool on-site. Other downtown hotels such as Market Pavilion Hotel, Belmond Charleston Place, Hotel Bennett, and The Mills House are options that do have pools.
We hope this information is helpful to you. Please let us know if you have any further questions!
Warm regards,
Carlo Carroccia

Dear Jenn,
Yes - the unaffiliated construction project across the street is still underway, with an anticipated completion of August-September of this year. That said, the majority of the exterior of the new building has been completed already, and by city noise ordinance, the project work is limited in which hours they can work (7:30a-6p).
We hope this information is helpful to you. Thank you and enjoy the rest of your day !
Best regards,
Carlo Carroccia
