Wild Dunes Resort offers a beachside experience that many guests appreciate for its proximity to Charleston and local amenities. While some travelers enjoy the spacious rooms, others have expressed concerns over noise, cleanliness, and dated interiors. The resort's atmosphere is described as lively, with a mix of serene and energetic vibes depending on events. Opinions on the service and amenities are mixed; guests enjoy the beach and pool but are critical of the extra charges and inconsistent service. The general consensus suggests that the resort's pricing feels steep, considering the additional fees and variable value offered.

From check in to check out we thoroughly enjoyed the stay. The amenities were nice such as heated outdoor lap pool across the street, heated pool on location, heated indoor pool, and multiple inside gym locations with cardio and weights, beach, as well as any eateries on site. The value was rated as budget but this is due to time of year with exception of New Years Eve night. The room we received #206 was clean and a larger corner king suite with great views of the complex and the ocean. The bed was comfortable along with a sofa seating area, desk, and wide screen television with premium channels. The phone was set up to push a button to dial the golf club, restaurants, and guest services without having to dial directly. There was complimentary Krups coffee maker with four different selections of coffee included. There was a mini fridge as well with ample room for beverages or left overs. The bathroom area was large and nicely fashioned and looked new. There was a closet that had the light switch integrated into the door frame so when the door opened it would light up. Inside the closet was his and hers luggage stands and a safe. The valet staff was great and asked most every time if we needed help or directions to an event or area. The valet staff handled my car with care as I found no evidence of damage to the outside or inside of my vehicle. The green option for room cleaning was a terrific idea and made this trip even more enjoyable for me and my wife. The green room option gave you a $5 coupon for each night stay to use for food or activities on site. We used our coupons at the villas restaurant and at Woodies. The staff at both were very welcoming and pleasant to be around. Even though I gave this location excellent there were a few areas I felt could improve. The green room option of the room to opt out of cleaning was not explained at check in so we had to figure this out on our own. We opted into this which was a great option giving you a $5 coupon each nights stay without receiving room cleaning service. These coupons can be used together to significantly offset the cost of a meal or activity. The room had no microwave which did not allow to warm up foods or drinks while in room. The exterior of this location was all in all great but was showing wear anywhere there was wood.

We stayed in a 2 bed/2 bath at the residences for a week. Overall the accommodations were what we expected for the price, not overly extravagant but overall clean and nice. Here is a breakdown of everything:

Accommodations: We were on the second floor of building B of the residences. When booking I requested a high floor with ocean view and we got the complete opposite, we were overlooking the ping pong tables. I’m sure everyone asks for those rooms so not a big deal that they couldn’t accommodate. We tried to check in early and were no able to, our room was ready at exactly 4pm. The residences are a little older so there is some wear and tear in them but overall they were clean. On one of the days the elevator broke - not a big deal for us as we are all able bodied but I can see how that would be an issue for some. Housekeeping is typically every 3rd day but we requested they clean our room before that and they were able to.

Valet: We actually only used valet once and we had no issues getting our car quickly. After that we found the surface lot that was pretty convenient to our building and just used that as it was easier for us.

Food: There are some food options at the resort but as previously mentioned, they are pricey. We had planned on leaving the resort to eat anyway so no big deal but if you are planning on eating all your meals at the resort prepare to be underwhelmed.

Beach Chairs: We reserved beach chairs that were supposed to be put up by 9am and unfortunately when we got to the beach they weren’t ready. The people putting them up were very apologetic and clearly understaffed. We got to talking to one of them and they said that with school starting most of the college kids have gone back to school. I think the resort should put the umbrellas up and just have the staff sit by the beach chairs and have people check in when they arrive and have them carry the chairs over. Some people get there at 9am and others not until 12pm so it would make it so people don’t have to wait for their chairs.

Pool: We spent a lot of the time at the sweet grass inn pool. We have kids so the amount of kids there didn’t bother us but I could see how this would not be relaxing for a couple.

Cell Service: If you have Verizon expect to have no cell service.

Overall it was a great vacation. The resort is definitely understaffed but is doing the best they can under the circumstances. Everyone we encountered was beyond nice and helpful. We would definitely return.

Response from the Managing Director at Wild Dunes Resort: Thank you for your recent stay with us, and for taking the time to give us a review of your experience. We apologize the location of your accommodation was not what you expected and also the challenge you had with checking in. We would also like to apologize for the inconvenience as a result of maintenance issues being performed on the elevator. We are happy to know you had a positive experience with the valet service. We were disappointed to read that our food options fell short of your expectations and have shared your feedback with our Food and Beverage Managers. We sincerely regret your experience with beach chairs and readily acknowledge, we are having staffing challenges which we are working hard to remedy. This was a last minute Mothers Day trip with my fiancé and our daughter. Location wasn't the easiest to find but we managed to find it and once we got ther Keith took great care of us. We had a King room that had a sofa bed that faced the resort. Our room had a balcony door, but no balcony and you could not open the door for fresh air despite there being a bar on the outside. We booked under a special rate so this was not a huge deal for us just something you may want to consider if this is a deal breaker for you. If you want an ocean view you need a higher floor and on the other side of the hotel. The room was clean however we were greeted with the smell of smoke (the herbal kind) lol. This happened several times over the weekend and we mentioned it to the front desk who simply said they would let management know but there was no action taken as this is supposed to be a non smoking resort. The toilet are in the bathroom is TINY your knees will be touching the toilet paper (even my 6 year old complained) other than those two issues the room was good. The boardwalk inn has an adults only pool so if you have little ones you have to walk to one of the other locations, at the end of the boardwalk there is a lovely pool area with two pools, a small pool restaurant and pool bar as well as access to the beach where you can rent chairs and umbrellas 25.00 a piece. We had breakfast at Woodys which is beside the golf place where there were golf carts and other equipment. On the other side there is tennis courts and a small playground. Woodys is more like a small bistro most of the tables are on the outside and most people use this as a grab and go so to speak. They offered a small menu and had some adult beverages. Food was average and took awhile, they gave us a pager, but were on vacation so it wasn't a huge deal. For lunch we ate at the poolside restaurant/bar and the food was okay just really expensive for what it was although, the drinks were delicious. We did not eat dinner here or any of our other meals so I cannot comment on those. Valet was great and always brought our car quickly. The Island can have a lot of traffic and it will take some time getting on and off during certain times of the day so be prepared for that as well. I have pictures of the hotel added as well in the photos including the bathroom and the balcony.

We were booked at Wild Dunes Resort (Boardwalk Inn) for three nights, but opted to leave early and stay at a friend's house after our experience at the property. Resort staff did not abide by the pool reservation system, a COVID precautionary measure to limit the number of people using the pools. This resulted in extremely overcrowded pools with few options for social distancing. The two pools at the Grand Pavilion are very small (think backyard swimming pool), not what one expects to find at a 4 star beach resort. In-room cleaning has been temporarily suspended due to COVID, but there was little evidence of any efforts to clean public spaces, wipe down door handles, elevator buttons or other high touch surfaces. We paid for a junior hotel suite and were given a dark and dingy room next to a noisy elevator that kept us up half the nights. The furnishings were dated and in poor condition, the patio door was broken and the air conditioning didn't cool the bedroom. We had to call the front desk multiple times asking for sheets and towels that never arrived. To add insult, the resort charges a $15 per item fee ($20 if you reserve on the spot) for worn out beach chairs and umbrellas in addition to a beach fee and a resort fee, which would normally cover such items. When I asked what the resort fee did cover I was told that it was "for wireless internet and furniture in the rooms." Overall, the Wild Dunes Resort was not a four star experience and seems far out of step with the Hyatt brand.

Thank you for your recent stay, and for taking the time to share this feedback. I am terribly sorry to hear about your disappointing experience at the Resort. In keeping with state & local COVID-19 laws, pool safety precautions are in place across property based on occupancy and include sanitizing breaks during pool hours. Each pool has an attendant located at the entrance to confirm all pool reservations and manage max occupancy levels for each area. As we continue to carefully operate during COVID-19 the safety of our guests and associates is our top priority which does include suspended daily housekeeping services. I have shared this constructive feedback with our front desk leaders to aid in our future improvement. We hope you will give us a second chance to prove that to you by visiting Wild Dunes again sometime.

We were really looking forward to traveling here once my wife and I became fully vaccinated. We drove from Connecticut instead of flying as we still don’t want to deal with airports. When we arrived at The Boardwalk Inn at Wild Dunes after 14 hours on the road the resort did not disappoint us. We have stayed here many times. The Sweetgrass Inn just opened and is a beautiful hotel yet we chose to stay at the Boardwalk yet still used amenities such as the pool, pool bar and evening fire pit conversations with other guests at Sweetgrass. It was great to see Carol at the front desk of Boardwalk. Richard was also still there and now in charge of valet service. They have been mainstays at this resort and the resort is a better place because of their service. Sean a young evening valet attendant was very helpful. It appears during COVid and the construction of the Sweetgrass inn maintenance at the Boardwalk was deferred some but it was obvious to us that management is aware of that and work is underway with painting and other projects. The bar staff at the pool at Sweetgrass was great including Bill, Scott and others. The only negative thought I can pass along after a week staying at this resort is that communication to staff as to policies at the resort is not as clear as it should be. I could ask and did ask why our room was not cleaned and depending on who I asked the question to I would get a different answer. It appears that after three days of receiving cleaning services the 4th day you don’t get your room cleaned. Housekeeping and those at the front desk the evening this happened could not explain this and it makes no sense to me whatsoever. Overall fantastic trip and we are thrilled we were able to visit once again.

Started out with an issue with valet checking in, but the front desk fixed it quickly. Our room wasn’t available as the air conditioning wasn’t working, so we had to move rooms after the first night. We were told all staff would be wearing masks. We never saw one staff member wearing a mask. Texted for towels to be delivered as housekeeping only comes every 3 days - took several hours to get the towels requested. No poolside food/beverage service, food comes from a different location so the wait is lengthy. The first night, our server either forgot to put in our order or the computer glitched but we waited 90 min to get our food. Lots of issues to be worked out.

My family has been going to Wild Dunes for many years. For early years Wild Dunes was a special place. Personal customer service, attention to detail, cleanliness, and property maintenance were hallmarks of every Wild Dunes visit. However, for the past several years a marked decline in each of those areas has been evident. The primary culprit seems to be the transition to a corporate owner in Destination Hotels. It has become a rigid, by-the-book, corporate entity that has moved customer service to the bottom of the priority list. We used to be willing to pay the premium to stay at Wild Dunes but are questioning whether it is still worth the investment.

The hotel exceeded our expectations with regards to cleanliness around COVID-19. We noticed everyday the hallways were be sanitized with a sprayer. As we walked by other rooms being cleaned, extreme efforts were being made by the hotel staff to clean each room. All linens were being removed, each room was sprayed/fumigated (we know this because of the hissing sound the fumigator made), we even noticed one person cleaning the back side of the TV!!! A supervisor was on our floor inspecting the rooms after cleaning. We saw and heard the conversations between the supervisor and housekeeping. If you are concerned about cleanliness and travel because of the pandemic, I feel comfortable recommending Wild Dunes. They were working exceptionally hard to keep people safe as we saw in the details. Every employee was wearing a face mask, even outside!

My fiancé and me had our wedding at the Isle of Palms in May of 2022. It was the right decision in choosing this resort. The resort itself has a variety of venues to choose from if you are planning a gathering or event. The layout of the resort is quite spacious, never feeling overcrowded or compressed with people. Once inside the resort, all leisure areas, restaurants, and stores are well within walking distance. We stayed in The Boardwalk Inn, which bars children, has two pool areas, and yields a beautiful boardwalk path for beach access. The event planners ensured our wedding day went off without a hitch. The service was very professional and encompassing of southern hospitality. The resort holds beautiful groves and beach locations for pictures. It’s an ideal place for wedding guests as it allows them to enjoy the venue and resort without the hassle of scheduling transportation. In general, the food and beverages offered at the resort are of very high quality. We stayed 7 days, and never had a subpar experience. Granted, you are in a resort, so prices for these items are going to be higher than you would be familiar with. The most important aspect of a stay for me is always hygiene and cleanliness. This resort is exceedingly clean. It is well kept, and the staff is appropriately dressed.

Wild Dunes went the extra mile for my fiancé and me. I happened to sit next to a friendly gentleman in plain clothes at a restaurant bar in the resort on our first day. We shot the breeze about oysters, beers, music, and other unimportant things. After some time, I told him I was getting married in the resort in a few days. By sheer coincidence, this gentleman worked for the resort. To welcome us to Wild Dunes, and completely against my wishes, he comped both of our meals and drinks for the night. He followed up with unanticipated wedding gift bags for both the groom and bridal parties, delivered to the rooms. It was an incredibly nice gesture, showcasing the treatment you receive as a guest at Wild Dunes. Thank you, Eric Sanders, and Wild Dunes, for a week we will never forget.

the hotel and experience was ok but i was expecting more, i mean the price value of the stay doesn't match with the experience.
The hygiene-related i put 7 because when i check in the fridge room doesn't works, the bring another one but was completely dirty, i did clean it, for sure the bring it from the storage to the room with out clean it before, was dirty in and out.
I understand that because covid 19 everything is different, but for one side you do not provide housekeeping service, everything close earlier like the beach pavilion with pool close at 7pm except 11pm, all restaurant except 1 was close and i had to drive 10 miles to find the first restaurant area, and more, but for the other side you charge a full resort and accommodation fee .As everything is close i did ask if can I get an upgrade room for the one that has kitchen to make the stay easier but they answer No, is important to say that the hotel was no more than 20% booked!!!!!!! i never understood why say No. Keeping in mind all what i said, i did ask for a late check out and the answer again was No. I think that you have to be more flexible, is not really fair for example no TO have housekeeping and receive a No when i asked for an upgrade or late check out if the hotel has just 20% booked, and keeping in mind that my hyatt membership provide upgrade if is available.
The experience was just ok and the employee were just friendly enough, but for the price that was paid i really expect more than that.
thank you

Also, something I wasn't told. You need to book the chair and umbrella rentals a day or more if you can in advanced, especially since its summer. The front desk has the number of the people to call. They will set it up and take down for you. I didn't know this and tried to get chairs and umbrella the same day and there were none available. I had to buy some at the grocery and they didn't hold up against the wind.
Answer from Wayne H
Sweet grass Inn is a nice hotel, while the Residences (where we stayed) are nice condos with living area, bedroom, big bath, fold out sofa, and kitchenette (cook top, full size fridge, dishwasher, and plates etc.)
