I stayed here in January 2021. I asked for a quiet smoking room and was pleased that any smoking room was even available. I always travel with cleaning wipes and wipe down hotel rooms when I arrive and although you can tell the place is a little older, the furniture and remote and phone had surprisingly little dirt and dust present. Anytime you get a smoking room there is a chance it will smell of smoke or animals. There was a tinge of animal smell in the room, but a little room spray and I was fine with the whole experience. The room was spacious, quiet, and bed was comfortable. Car is parked right outside your room and there are no people above you so you don;t have to worry about upstairs neighbors waking or disturbing you. Front desk staff was very friendly and are always present in lobby. I would definitely stay here again.

We stayed at Southern Lodge for the first time in 4 or 5 years and it was still a very nice place. Only drawback was the breakfast buffet was closed due to the Covid plague. Definitely will go back the next time we are in the area.

Oh my gosh what a dump. The ceiling is falling down in the bathroom, the bedspreads were dirty, there was a hair on the toilet seat and a hair on the sheets, no working smoke detector, toilet is dirty, tub is dirty, just gross. I cannot believe the state of SC hasn't shut them down. It is not safe or sanitary.

We stopped at this familiar stopover after a tiring day's drive. As before, the desk clerk was extremely friendly and professional! The room looked ok and we settled in! Later in the evening my wife said "look at your feet!" Both my feet and hers were filthy!! As we both had been wearing shoes while driving all day, there's only one place the dirt, almost like coal dust, could have come from...the carpet! It must have not been cleaned in months/years??
So if you do stay here...keep your shoes on!!
This was our third, and FINAL stay!

Although staff was friendly, the room was horrible, smelly, and nasty! This is the St. Matthews/601 location. I book through a 3rd party online months in advance but got a call closer to my stay and was told they were overbooked and I could get a king room because I only had two people. I looked online to see what was available and the room originally had was still showing available but three times the cost. When I arrived they had a double room but a.smoking room that smelled so bad. I learned there was an event that weekend and no options left at any hotels. It appears I got the worst room due to low price for booking in advance. Go elsewhere, fast! Shady business.

I have stayed here about twice a year since summer 2013 and I have always had a consistently good experience, regardless of when I have stayed. The staff, Ieesha and her 'mini-me' daughter, Iyanna (happy birthday), Tanika and Minita are all wonderful. They are professional, friendly and helpful. This is my go-to place to stay in Orangeburg. I always feel safe when I stay (even when I travel alone). it is a clean place to stay for a very good price.

In September, 2014 I posted a glowing following of the Southern Lodge.
I'm now wishing that I could retract that review based on the room our traveling companions were assigned during the last week January 2015! These folks are just too polite to be openly critical of a hotel.
I feel I have the authority to write on their behalf as, based on our recommendation, our travelling companions stayed at the Southern Lodge. The were greeted by a friendly desk clerk who promptly assigned them a room as they had requested. That's where the good part ended!
The room they were assigned was generally grimy with a yellow-stained mattress cover and peeling wallpaper. While these things are not nice, they are tolerable. What is not tolerable in a hotel is blood on the pillow cases! Our travelling companions are just too nice and should not have accepted this room...........we sure wouldn't have,
Needless to say, I no longer want to give the Southern Lodge a glowing review. They seem to think that it's o.k. to sell rooms in this condition hoping that they'll find polite guests who they can take advantage of and who will accept unacceptable accommodations!
Adios, Southern Lodge! Never again! I want my previous review back!

To the management, On April 4th. 2012, aprox. 7pm. My wife and asked the counter lady to allow us to see one of the rooms. She questioned why we wanted to see the room and was giving us a hard time. She finally threw the key card at us.
The counter employe was a black lady with short hair, aprox. 5'5" 170 lbs and about 28 yrs. old.
While we walked to room 110 we discussed how rude this person was. The room was a little musty so we decided to not stay there. I walked back to the reception area, placed the key on the counter and thanked her for letting us see the room. I was parked in the parking lot off to the side of the canopy. I started searching my I-Phone for numbers to other hotels before I headed out into traffic. The same receptionist confronted me and my family and asked If was going to stay there, I told her that I was not and she barked in a threatening tone that I had to leave the premisses accused me of using there wi-fi.. I politely told her that I was not using her wifi and I would leave once I get the info I was searching for. She said if I don't leave now that she was going to call the police. Mind you I had my 84 year old mother, my wife and my 8, and 5 yr old children on the car. This person was mental!! I pulled of the edge of the parking lot and kept searching my phone. she ran out again and said that I better get the "F" out of the parking lot. I asked for her name and she said "my name is the Police and that she was not playing with me"
If that is the type of people this place hires that tells you all you need to know about the management and care they offer to prospective patrons.

Do not ruin your day or beginning of your vacation by walking into this place. The Price is low but "you get what you pay for"
I went to the Hampton Inn at three times the price and it was booked .. the Southern Lodge, across the street, barley had a car in the parking lot.

I visit this location October 20, 2018 building looks nice from outside, but beware of the inside. I check-in, went to get something to eat, I was gone about two hours then I come back, to view the room for the first time, only to take my shoes off to a fully wet carpet, upon calling the front desk the lady refuse to give me her name, I informed her that the carpet was wet, she told me, that its raining outside and all there carpet are wet in all rooms, I requested a refund, she refused, advised me, that I had to wait until morning to get a refund. Please note she did not offer me another room are attempted to resolve my problem, as if this was normal, and I had a problem with the way it all was handled, did I say she refuse to give me her name or the owners or manager of the property, I paid with my credit card so I dispute payment went to the Travel Lodge next store, GREAT! I would never recommend this motel to anyone, BEWARE! Still this day I still have not gotten a phone call from these people shame on you.

I don't know the physical addresses, but the one you want to stay at is right off the interstate exit. The other is located closer within the town of Orangeburg. Check the locations of each in the map and you can see clearly which one is which.
