Charming family owned hotel located in an ancient building. Very lovely from the outside, the interiors were mainly under refurbishment inside. Onsite parking available. A quiet courtyard is availble for drinks too. The staff were very nice and welcoming. The room was quite compact, but comfortable, and, luckily, faced the silent courtyard. The bathroom also very basic and small and needed to be upgraded. Breakfast was nice and complete. Would come back here if driving in this area.
It has been a funny old year and, with Covid restrictions, all of our other holidays had been cancelled. So we decided to book a couple of nights away... this was our second attempt as the first one got postponed due to the November lockdown. From that postponement, through to the run up to the trip and throughout our stay, the staff could not have been more helpful - they rearranged things, took meal orders for our stay and explained what the “Covid secure” arrangements would be. It made us feel incredibly confident that we would be looked after. On arrival we were greeted warmly and shown around the hotel - it is just beautiful! We stayed in the Terrace Suite overlooking the terrace and with occasional glimpses of the trains on the Steam Railway. It is beautifully furnished and quiet. We ate dinner on both evenings in the restaurant and... wow! Just wow! The food is just amazing! Locally sourced produce and home made bread... everything was deliciously cooked. The staff are incredibly friendly and made us feel so welcome - thank you so much for a perfect few days away. We hope to come back and visit again!! …
We stayed 2 nights in the Bishops Suite for our Golden wedding treat (should have been on a cruise) . From the moment we checked in we felt relaxed and treated really well. Service throughout was superb, efficient and friendly but not intrusive. The covid protocol was fine and did not hamper us at all. The room was a delight, we had been warned on check-in that there was an issue with the plumbing, and this was compensated for without us having to point it out. We ate in the restaurant on the first evening and for breakfast each day. Pre-ordering was required due to covid. Thoroughly enjoyed all food. All in all we had a wonderful weekend away and all thoughts of a missed cruise went out of our minds.
I was booked as part of a group. The hotel is on a busy main road. On arrival, I asked for a room at the back of the hotel away from the road. I was told that there were none available although the hotel was clearly not very busy. I got the impression that the person who booked the rooms might have ruffled the feathers of the person responsible for room allocation. My room, number 6 was at the front and side of the hotel, near the kitchen. Road noise, kitchen fan noise and a regular sound similar to that of a washing machine on spin cycle blighted my sleep. The food was outstanding, if a little slow. The restaurant staff were fantastic.
This hotel is wonderful! It is spotlessly clean and our room was very comfortable and well decorated in an understated style sympathetic to the original manor. Everything was well maintained and the bathroom looked as if it had been recently refurbished. The location, a couple of minutes walk fromm pleasant for a pre-dinner drink. All in all a lovely hotel providing a pleasant change from the bland chains and I cannot think of a single negative thing to say about it!
