When Gleneagles first opened its doors in 1924, it was quickly dubbed a riviera in the Highlands. Now, a hundred years on, there’s still nothing to compare to its beauty and sheer range of attractions. As a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, Gleneagles continues to offer an unrivalled array of attractions, including luxury hotel accommodation, a range of bespoke suites, three championship golf courses, an award-winning spa, and Restaurant Andrew Fairlie, a 2 Michelin star restaurant.
Star ratings are intended to indicate the general level of features, amenities, and services to expect. This property is classified according to TheAA: The Automobile Association.
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.

Nestled amidst scenic landscapes, The Gleneagles Hotel is celebrated for its central location, ideal for families and history buffs alike. While the hotel's friendly staff and elegant atmosphere receive commendations, service inconsistencies have been noted.
The rooms offer comfort and modern amenities, yet some guests have encountered issues ranging from poor views to maintenance. Despite the hotel's high cleanliness standards and diverse amenities, which include a luxurious spa and numerous dining options, the value is debated due to steep and sometimes unforeseen costs.

Getting the bad out of the way first, our first (upgrade) room had an awful drain smell, which the maintenance team tried to fix and proclaimed they had, but after returning from the day’s activities, the smell remained which was really disappointed having seemingly settled in for two nights but having to pack up again. Reception were apologetic and accommodating of a new room, giving different options, unfortunately the view on the other side wasn’t quite the same. I would have expected a complimentary drink at the bar at least for the inconvenience - at another hotel in this category in Italy, a mere passing comment upon check-out about the disappointingly brief welcome was compensated with a complimentary Michelin star meal we’d had the previous evening! Anyway, we weren’t there to free load it was more a matter of principle. Lastly, the lack of in-room refreshments for the price is pretty shameful - £8 for a shortbread that was offered as a parting gift was somewhat surprising.
Now, to the good. Despite the above, it’s rightly regarded as one of, if not the, best hotel in the UK. Service is impeccable throughout. We ate at both the Birnham and Strathearn on our stay and they were both 10/10. From being ambushed with the champagne trolley at the start (a little pushy tbh) to the fantastic crepe suzette, Strathearn is the ideal celebration dinner experience. Piano music adding to the ambience of the stunning interior. The food was 8/10 IMO - we went for the classic Wellington which was good, but the overall experience is what made it. The Birnham steaks were some of the best tasting we’ve had in a relaxed, yet tasteful, environment.
Activity-wise, we really enjoyed Padel in the newly refurbished sporting centre that oozes style and class & I’d thoroughly recommend. We enjoyed the stroll around the grounds despite walking through a shooting range - ideal to cozy up in the golf club bar afterwards.
Lastly, the breakfast at Strathearn is very much something to look forward to. Surely one of the best hotel breakfast offerings globally - an extensive selection of high-quality food. You’ll easily spend over an hour here. It’s tempting to dive into the a la carte offering, but the buffet is superb.
There’s lots of places to explore and activities to keep you busy, so you won’t be short of something to do both families and couples alike. At ~£2K for two nights all-in, it’s far from cheap and pound-for-pound not likely to be worth it if you’re looking at it through purely a value lens, however, if you’re looking for a memorable experience or a celebration, or you’re fortunate enough for money not to be relevant then it’s a stunning place to spend a few nights.

Thank you for sharing your detailed review. We truly appreciate you taking the time to highlight both the positive and less-than-ideal aspects of your stay. We are sorry to hear about the drain smell in your first room, and we completely understand your disappointment with having to pack up and move rooms. We appreciate your patience as our team worked to address the issue, but we recognize that it shouldn’t have disrupted your stay. Your feedback about not receiving a complimentary gesture for the inconvenience is noted, and we will certainly take that into account as we continue to improve our guest experience. On a brighter note, we are thrilled that you enjoyed the overall service, dining, and activities. It is great to hear that you had a memorable time at both Birnam and Strathearn, and we are especially pleased that the breakfast at Strathearn stood out as one of the best you have had! Your recommendation of the Padel courts is much appreciated as well. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts, and we hope to welcome you back for another stay in the future!

We spent 3 nights staying to celebrate my significant birthday. Knowing how expensive it is to stay here I was a bit apprehensive and really hoped it would live up to my dreams and expectations. I need not have worried. Gleneagles is quite simply out of this world.
Our room was decorated traditionally as I hoped and expected. It is absolutely spotless and the general daily housekeeping and turn down service on the first and second night was such a nice touch. Get a big spoiled as I was disappointed when our room was not done on the last day but that’s me being spoiled and pedantic.
We received chocolate cake to mark my birthday which was so tasty and such a nice touch.
I cannot speak highly enough about the staff. They are all so friendly and accommodating. The outfits they wear really add to the whole experience.
The spa facilities and treatments are fantastic. The cafe area is lovely and really handy for lunch.
The waiters in the Century Bar were brilliant, special mention to Fraser who we really enjoyed speaking to and who looked after us so well.
We ate in Andrew Fairlie which was such a treat and an experience never to be forgotten.
Now, breakfast! I honestly cannot put into words what a wonderful experience it is. The only thing being no hotel breakfast will ever compete with Gleneagles and I thought I had good breakfasts in the past.
Also, thank you to gent who took us for the axe throwing session. He was very patient with my lack of skill and made it very enjoyable.
Honestly being in Gleneagles feels like you are in the most relaxing and wonderful place. I just really hope I can go back one day.

Stayed here with my husband for a night on our honeymoon and wish we had booked more nights! We had a top floor room of the main hotel overlooking the tennis courts and it was fantastic. The decor of the whole hotel was like stepping foot onto the first class areas of the Titanic - perfectly classy but with all the modern amenities. Our room was spacious and the bathroom had heated tiles - the hotel even left us a sweet note congratulating us on our honeymoon. Not sure whether we had anyone staying adjacent to us as we didn't hear any noises during our stay, it was very peaceful and relaxing.
The grounds are massive with plenty to do (and staff to help you book the activities), and there are some small shops on site for browsing. We dined at Andrew Fairlie and had a drink at the Century Bar after, and also had breakfast at the Strathearn the next day - all 3 were outstanding. Breakfast had a plethora of options - you could order eggs your way or pancakes at your table, but the buffet also had hot foods ready to go (sausages, haggis, black pudding, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, hashbrowns, baked beans), a made to order omelette station, tables of pastries, cereals, fruit and yoghurt, juices, cold items (house smoked salmon, cheese, oatcakes, condiments), cocktails, even a kid's section and gluten free section. They've catered for everyone and every appetite, though it's best to show up hungry because there is so much to sample! Breakfast ran from 7:30am-11am to allow for early and late risers, with check out at midday.
All the staff we encountered from the porters to reception to greeters and wait and shop staff were warm and kind, we felt very welcome the entire time we were there and will definitely be returning to spend longer time here next time!

We stayed on a Sunday night at the hotel. There is no disputing the magnificent setting, but the service and food certainly did not match the price charged for and over night stay with Dinner
I had vouchers which had been generous gifts from my children and I contacted the playground planners to enquire if I could convert them to an overnight stay. They quickly responded, asked what date I would like to book and I advised them. There was no response from them thus I contacted the hotel direct and the price was increased by nearly £100 fin the intervening days. This is not about the cost of the room, this is about how the enquiry and lack of response was dealt with.
Yes they did offer an upgrade to our room when we arrived , which was lovely, if you didn’t look too close at the dusty tables and marks on the carpets.
We had had a light lunch and drinks in the bar which were served by attentive staff and within a reasonable time, the service expected from a 5 star hotel.
I requested additional towels for our room and the turndown service that they kindly offered, neither of which was fulfilled
We had booked dinner in the Birnam at 7:45 and we were finally served our main course at 8:45 .. which was cold. We advised our waitress who could not be more apologetic and quickly took our food away to be replaced .
The Restaurant Manager.. glanced by our table said she would get it “warmed” up for us … and that is exactly what happened. My meat was clearly put back on the grill which made it dry and crusty. The vegetables I can only guess were thrown into a microwave which left some hot spots on them .. there was no attempt made to provide fresh dishes. As it’s after 9pm we were hungry and just put up with this disappointment.
Breakfast was a delightful affair of a multitude of choices, unless you wanted “hot food” again this was served tepid, so I am guessing this is what to expect from this hotel, we left rather dissatisfied again at the quality of food.
I did over a week ago provide the hotel with my feedback, and wow they are great at reaching out to ask when I would be available to discuss my issue but I am still waiting on an actual person to make that contact.
Go to Gleneagles use the spa facilities, they are excellent, walk the grounds, they are beautiful, have a cocktail in the bar, but I would certainly think again about staying overnight or eating in the restaurants.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. Please allow me to start by sincerely apologizing for the service lapses and issues you encountered during your stay, including communication regarding your booking, room cleanliness, unfulfilled requests, as well as a disappointing dining experience in the Birnam. We take great pride in providing our guests with the highest standard of service and it is for this reason that I am sorry we were unable to meet your expectations at this time. However, I am pleased that your feedback has reached our F&B Manager, Liam Simpson, who I belive has been in contact with yourself and you managed together to find an acceptable resolution. We stayed here for two nights and it’s not what we expected. We arrived at the hotel around 3pm check in was seamless. The hotel rooms are beautiful and clean, They have used their own products in the room as a personal preference I find this feels cheap I think it would of been better to work with a luxury brand considering it’s a 5* hotel but that’s just personal preference (try to get a room with a view you won’t regret it).
After we had settled in we decided to use the spa. On arrival at the spa we was greeted by a very unhelpful staff member who didn’t explain anything to us or show us around just where to go, we found the changing rooms ourself got changed and realised we had not been given a band for the locker? One of our party members went back to reception and the gentlemen behind the desk said ‘he forgot and couldn’t leave the front desk to give us a band’ so we went without I was already in a swimming suit at that point, I wasn’t going back to reception so we had to leave our stuff on the side in the hope it would be there on return! The swimming pool area is pretty full of kids they do have a adults only area but it’s been pretty poorly designed it’s just a glass door so you can still hear the screaming, not great when you are trying to relax. The changing rooms are also heavily used so pretty dirty I felt this needed better cleaning, please note there is no hair straightens or vanity kits in the changing rooms I feel this is pretty poor for a 5* hotel.
We then had dinner in the The Birnam that evening, possibly the poorest experience I have ever had at a restaurant our waiter spend the whole time at the counter. Water didn’t come for 20 minutes our food took 45 minutes and when it did come one of our fish dishes was undercooked, so had to be sent back they did however remove the service change without us asking the lack of service was incredibly poor and we would never return to this restaurant.
That night in our rooms we had turn down service we loved this touch however some of us had sleep spray and some didn’t? Again inconvenient.
We then had breakfast we couldn’t complain about this it was truly amazing everything you could possibly wish for!
That day we had a treatment booked we didn’t realise there is a whole other hydrotherapy section but you can only use this if you have booked a treatment so we would recommend doing this rather than using the other swim facilities if you are looking for a relaxing experience. The massage was amazing but I did feel i didn’t get my full 50 minutes I was in and out frustrating when you have paid 198 pounds excluding 12.5% tip.
Later that evening we visited The Strathearn this is when we realised why everybody loves the hotel so much the service was second to none the food was incredible and the entertainment was a highlight.
We then had breakfast on the morning of check out we was offered orange juice and a take away box a totally different better experience than the previous morning so again inconsistent.
So we felt elements were great but all staff members served differently so nothing was ever consistent. Would we return? No I don’t think we would the pool area is stressful and the service is too inconsistent.

The quality of the room we were in was lovely, beautiful decor in line with the style of the hotel, plush carpets and the quality of the bathroom with it's deep roll top bath, his and hers marble sink and rainforest shower was a pleasure to use. This was a country room with views over the tennis courts. With an array of restaurants to choose from you are spoiled for choice of where to dine at various price ranges and with and Andrew Fairlie restaurant for fine dining on site also. There were a few shops to choose from with some items in our price range but a lot of it, due to the reputation of the hotel, was on the pricey side for our budget but we still indulged ourselves with a few purchases. I unfortunately never got to see the spa treatment/pool area which I intend going back some day to experience and also a walk round the glorious grounds they had. We had a wonderful experience with our overnight stay and I can honestly say the staff made the stay special.

Not one bad thing to say about Gleneagles! From the moment we arrived the staff were polite and helpful in every area of the hotel.
The hotel itself is beautifully decorated and immaculately clean.
Our room was warm and everything from the towels to bedding were of the best quality, and very comfortable. We were especially pleased the mini fridge in the room had a small carton of real milk for teas and coffee. We had requested a quiet room, and this request was fulfilled with a lovely room right at the end of all the hotel corridors.
We used the pool and sauna area one afternoon; which was also clean and in immaculate condition.
We ate in the Garden Cafe, Dormy and Birnham over our weekend and anything we ordered was absolutely delicious. Service is prompt and friendly in all areas.
On the whole this was a most enjoyable weekend away celebrating our wedding anniversary. We can’t rate the staff and this hotel enough. A must stay!

Beautiful grounds and lots to do for non golfers. Staff very helpful. Special call out to Richard (front desk host) who helped me get a meeting room set up for an overseas meeting.
Dinner in the dining room is very special, food is excellent and the sommelier and wait staff were very attentive. Food was also excellent.
One downside, there were dogs everywhere traveling with guests and that week many many children. Suggest that the main dining room should not be allowed for young children, some of whom were well behaved but others were not and there were a lot of them due to mid term break in UK.
Room cleaning was a bit of an issue as we left the pls clean room sign on the door at 9 am, when we came back at 1 it wasn’t done and after asking the front desk the room was only cleaned by 3:30, not acceptable.
Rooms were clean, well appointed but some things are getting worn, like sinks in new building, best shower ever.
Service in the bar was mediocre and slow. Service at Dormy was non existent, slow, ignored most of the time like they were ding you a favour, food there was low to mediocre.
Nice pathways for walking. Really need to put some gravel on them. They were pure mud when we walked on a sunny day

I’ve been coming to Gleneagles multiple times a year for over a decade and loved it, but my recent trips (since about 2023) have been an utter disappointment. The prices just keep going up, not helped by the most ridiculous 12.5% “compulsory discretionary” service charge on everything (I mean EVERYTHING, even the room rate and spa treatments). Meanwhile, the standard is dropping significantly, with extremely long wait times for service at most of the restaurants. Even the pool often has a wait time, and there have been multiple trips when we haven’t managed to gain entry to the pool at all because it is “at capacity”. However this thing that frustrates us most as dog lovers and owners is that the hotel is probably the only place on earth that has become LESS dog friendly since Covid. While the hotelier billionaires pleasure in charging an absurd surplus for owners wishing to bring their dogs, they don’t actually allow the dogs into anywhere but the corridor. No restaurant or cafe is dog friendly. The only place you can sit with them is the corridor outside the Garden Cafe. And in terms of dog walks, you can forget about it. No dogs are allowed on the Glenmor estate nearby the hotel (which would apparently contradict the public right to roam), nor are they allowed anywhere near the falconry or the gundog area for the most part of the day. While I can understand the reasoning at times, why bother claiming to be dog friendly at all? Just say it how it is : we don’t allow dogs, and accept the reduction in profit that comes with it.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We regret that to hear that your recent experience at Gleneagles did not meet your expectations, especially given your long history with us. Every piece of feedback is important to us and please rest assured we will address the concerns you raised, particularly regarding pricing, long waits and the service charges. This is discretionary and should you wish to speak to a member of staff, they will swiftly and happily remove this charges off your bill. We would be grateful for the opportunity to discuss these concerns in more detail with you. Please feel free to reach out to our Front of House Senior team, on foh.managers@gleneagles.com, so we can address your specific issues and explore how we can make things right. Your satisfaction is very important to us, and we value your loyalty as a guest. We look forward to hearing from you and hopefully welcoming you back under better circumstances.

On arrival, I felt I would be disappointed as the lobby was extremely busy with families and our early checkin request could not be accommodated. I was so wrong. Whilst we were having lunch we received a text to say the room was ready (normally hotels say they will tell you when the room is ready but they dont).
The room was excellent.
The two bars were atmospheric and the Strathearn restaurant was atmospheric for dinner with very good food and service. Breakfast was very crowded with families but the service was still good and the buffet was excellent. Rarely have I come across such a good buffet.
Activities are a must do; we really enjoyed clay pigeon shooting (shooting facilities were excellent and the instructor was great) Good massages in the spa and two decent inside swimming pools, one for adults.
What really makes the hotel is the staff. Excellent.
The only downside is the cost. Whilst I felt my room was fairly valued at c.£800 per night (ie it was very good!), activities and food and drink were very expensive. Each night we limited ourselves to one round of drinks in the bar (a G&T c. £20). I decided that I just had to forget the cost as otherwise I would not make the most of the stay, which was one of the best weekends away I have had.
Restaurant Andrew Fairlie was expensive but given the quality, was good value. I have reviewed that separately but that was perfection.
The only question I have if when, not if, will go back.

Thank you for the question.
We took our dog last summer and it was a wonderful experience for him.
The staff were great with him and there are lots of bowls for drinking etc.
Obviously, you have to pick up poo etc
You need to take your own food.
There are only certain rooms that you can stay in and you need to arrange for the dog before you arrive. There are extra costs associated with the dog as well.
We did not leave him for long, in the evening, but, he was tired as we had been on the long walk.
Suggest, pick up the phone and talk with the staff.
Wonderful place and fabulous staff!!
Kind regards
