We had both lunch and afternoon tea at this nice, traditional hotel. The food was really tasty and good value. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. A good place to take a break while visiting this beautiful part of Scotland.
This is an old hotel, now with all the modern comforts, providing a perfect place for a few days break. Food is excellent and staff are very friendly and accommodating. Most rooms have a view across the Cromarty Firth and are tastefully decorated and equipped....More
Tain is the poorer partner to the oft more popular Dornoch across the bay but is worth a visit. The Royal is in a bit of a time warp and could bring itself more up to date but offers a comfortable stay and reasonable breakfast....More
A lovely hotel and a fine old building with character. Mainly upgraded when we stayed there (except for reception area carpets, which were fine anyway but due for imminent renewal). Very comfortable bedroom with all amenities, an excellent restaurant and very relaxing lounge/bar. Dinner service...More

My husband and I are staying at this hotel next month and are concerned (based on the review so far) about this being the best choice for our family with two young children. What are the best rooms for a family that are quiet, clean, & spacious? It sounds like the hotel is really run down and dirty (smells like ciggy smoke, and noisy all hours of the night?!). Thank you for any help you can provide!

Hello there, apologies I did not see your question earlier. I was quite surprised by the hotel as I kind of expected the same, but it was very quiet when we were there, the restaurant was ok, however I'd recommend the restaurant by the station. It is ageing a bit, but the friendly staff and location more than made up for it as it was nice to be central. I believe the place was very busy at one point when the oil was booming, however the the terminal nearby has pretty much all but closed its door and I believe the whole town is quieter due to this. I was just in a single room, which was a bit on the small side, but I'd imagine the family rooms would be a lot larger. There is no smoking in the hotel by law (UK laws now). My room was cleaned daily. I dare say there is better hotels around Tain, however they're a bit of a distance. I was happy, but was only there on business. I hope this is of some help to you guys, and that you enjoy your trip, it is what you make of it that counts :)
