The Isle of Skye is situated on the west coast of mainland Scotland, and is the largest and best known of the Inner Hebrides. One of Europe's most dramatic and haunting lands, words can do little justice to describe Skye's awesome beauty. You simply have to see it for yourselves. Skye Backpackers sits in the picturesque fishing village of Kyleakin, skirted by mountains and sea. It's a small, cosy and friendly hostel with loads of character and great staff who are committed to ensuring you make the most of your time on the island. Our accommodation is comprised of 2 Double Rooms, 1 Twin Room, 1 Triple Room & 5 Dorm rooms that vary in size between 4-8 beds per room. We also have 2 caravans in our garden which can accommodate up to 20 people. All of our beds come complete with full bed linen and 2 pillows so there is no need to bring your sleeping bag. We have a great fully equipped self catering kitchen, a sunny dining area and the famous Groove Lounge with a real coal fire, loads of books and games and spectacular seaside views. Take some time to explore the island's haunted castle ruins; feel the mysterious presence of the legendary faeries in tranquil glens, waterfalls and mountain pools; visit whiskey distilleries and sample local beers and ales; take a relaxing stroll through the countryside or boldly ascend a mighty mountain. There’s plenty to see and do around the Isle of Skye so come and ask us for ideas – we’re a friendly bunch! We will give you all of our ‘Top Tips’ on our fantastic island and will even give you a FREE MAP. Possibly the BEST way to explore Skye is onboard our magical, mystical day tour with MacBackpackers. You can experience all of the best parts, learn all about the history & mythology and even hike up the dramatic hills for amazing views. Day tours start & finish from our hostel, cost £29 and can be booked at reception.(subject to availability) There are endless Cycling, Walking & Kayaking Routes literally on our doorstep. If you have your own bike or kayak with you it can be stored in our shed and we have bike wash facilities in our garden. If the weather catches you out, you can hire a pair of wellies and buy waterproof ponchos from reception. The hostel reception is open from 7am - 12 noon and then from 5pm - 10pm. If you arrive in the afternoon feel free to leave your bags, help yourselves to a cup of tea and we will check you in between 5pm-10pm. We look forward to welcoming you to Skye and to our cosy wee hostel!

The structure is mainly a dormitory but has some single rooms with shared bathroom that we were able to book well in advance, so my review is related to the rooms and not to the beds in the dorm. The stairs are a bit narrow and there is no elevator (be careful if you have very large suitcases with you) but overall it is a structure that met our needs. Excellent also the opportunity to use the kitchen, and to have breakfast for a small fee. Cleanliness is not top, but for one night can be fine. Being in Skye the value for money is really great.

This place is geared up for young folk who are off exploring Scotland - as a family, we felt it was ok for 1 night but wouldn't choose it for any more. The building itself is an old cottage with its own quirky personality ( like the staff !! ) and we enjoyed the lounge with its open fire, although if all the residents wanted to use it at the same time, it would be impossible to find a seat - spacious it is not ! Same with the kitchen and dining facilities - if more than two people wanted to cook, you were bumping into each other, and at breakfast we found ourselves unable to find a seat so ate standing up. The night porters scones were delicious, however ! I found this amusing and didn't mind at all, but if you are not used to hosteling it might be a problem. The atmosphere was friendly and easy-going and we had many a conversation with young travellers which just wouldn't happen in other types of accommodation. As we were travelling as a family we had booked a four bed dorm. The bunks were clean and the room basic but ok for us. We expected some noise at night considering the age range of the other residents, but we were pleasantly surprised that it was very quiet overnight. The shower looked 'interesting' so I didn't try it. All in all, if I was 18 again I would have no problem staying here, but as a very young and adventurous 50-year-old, one night was sufficient !

Terrible experience. As soon as we entered the reception we realized that it would not be a nice night, there was a strong bad smell. Shared stove in poor condition, corridors with an unidentified smell, showers in a closet, sink so small that you can not even wash your hands and rooms.... the rooms! I slept without having the courage to look at the sheets, a different smell from the hallway but characteristic of the room.
Cheap place, unique and only positive point.

I attended a hostel during middle school on a trip to Rome. I don't know how, at almost 60 years of age, I find myself sleeping for 2 nights in this dirty and smelly hovel, where not only there was a lack of hygiene requirements but also in terms of safety, electrical and structural systems. In Italy they would have closed it down immediately

We loved our stay in our cosy family room, including our girls who had a fantastic time. It had everything we could have needed - laundry service, access to a kitchen to cook our own meals, close proximity to a supermarket just over the bridge, friendly staff and a lovely view. We only wish we had of stayed longer! Next time we come back to the UK we will definitely be staying at Skye backpackers again

! To avoid!! To avoid!
Certainly the welcome is friendly however everything else is very negative.
It is not specified at the Reservation that the dormitories are in fact caravans outside. There are only 3 showers and they are in cagibis or outside. No wifi in the caravan, no possibility to turn off the light above the bunk beds above.

stayed one night in caravan at back of hostel, top bunks far to close to ceiling, never though i suffered from claustrophobia until then(just lower them, miles of space below)ventilation totally sucked with wire round window latch, might be great for asphyxiation perverts though, horrific if your not.Ok you can't legislate(maybe you should) for snoring mf's but it should be legal to strangle/suffocate said individual after one hour, wont take long with the little amount of oxygen in the air anyway.
Breakfast was great as were the facilities, and im sure the rooms are wonderful, but your caravans suck, air

To all the people giving this place five stars, what on earth are you smoking? This place is really nothing more than a vile, stuffy rats warren of a place. The place smells horrible and just looks like a squat that has gone wrong. I also have concerns about the fire safety of this place, we were put in a room at the end of the corridor, the only window that could be opened was a tiny slit at the top, if there was a fire along ANY point of the corridor THERE WOULD BE NO ESCAPE! My friend and I mulled this over lying in our respective bunks and came to the conclusion if there was a fire we could tear the sink off the wall and smash the window. Sweet dreams! After staying in countless hostels around the world, it's clear that we are miles behind in the UK and as a Scotsman it's frankly embarrassing! Never even bothered showering in the morning, just wanted to get as far away as possible. Stay only if you have to
