The location is not great, at the working end of the harbour next to a busy Scottish Fuels depot. The flat looks out northwest across the harbour.
We both developed misgivings from the moment we walked up to the front door of the shared access stair. The poorly fitting door didn't open or close easily, was scuffed at the bottom, and the stair was untidy. It reminded me of walking into any tenement in Edinburgh mostly occupied by student tenants, were they take no pride in the appearance of the entrance and nobody takes notice of mess on in the communal stairs. Not a good first impression.
We were given a little discount for only part occupying the six-person flat. One of the other bedrooms (the double with the ensuite!) was locked, so it was bad luck if we had wanted separate rooms or more space for any reason, or even had found the bedroom we were given not to taste.
To run through a few things that weren't that great in the flat:
1. The windows clearly hadn't been cleaned for quite a while, which somewhat spoiled the pleasant view
2. There were sacks of builders' rubble and other rubbish piled up outside the back of the flat, which you looked out onto from the kitchen and stairs. This was all that was between the flat and a steep slope less than 20 ft away
3. The pine furniture in the bedroom we were given had seen better days. It was scuffed and marked, a DIY repair job had been done to re-attach edges that had split off, and the bottom end of the bed was coming away from the frame at an angle
4. There was no lampshade in the bedroom--just a bare bulb above the wobbly bed!
5. A couple of spindles on the banister were loose at the bottom, leaving umpteen nails sticking out
Without going on to list every other thing that was a disappointment, suffice it to say that luxury was not the word I would use--the standard just wasn't even close to being that high. Nice to have the wi-fi, but the quality of the DIY finish was a little like you see on Property Ladder.
To their credit the proprietors helped point us in the direction of alternative accommodation on Skye the evening we arrived and promptly refunded our deposit with no quibble. We were happy to be out of there.
Looking back at the advertising for the Dunsgiath Apratment the focus is very much on the properties by Loch Fada, a little drive north of Portree. The reviews on tripadvisor are broadly complimentary about this accommodation. Be warned most of the photos on-line at http://www.dunsgiath.com are not of the Portree flat, however... and we learned why that may be.
If you are at all thinking about staying in the Portree flat, e-mail and ask for photos! Not of the views across the harbour from the windows, or close-ups of the large wooden coffee tables and vases, but snaps of all the bedrooms, the bathroom(s) and living accommodation. Then you can at least make up you own mind.

It was a pleasure to return after our days out to very comfortable and well appointed accommodation, with Sky TV and all the home comforts you could possibly need - comfy sofas, crisp white sheets and fluffy towels.
We also really appreciated the inclusion of the necessities for cooking such as seasonings and cooking oil - we made a very simple dinner of steak and salad (purchased in Portree) but everything we needed was there. There was also milk in the fridge, porridge pots for breakfast and a variety of hot beverages. We would not hesitate to return if visiting Skye in the future.
Also was first time we had ventured anywhere on our own with our 1 year old...she loved it too!
Spectacular views of The Old Man of Storr and a lovely warm place to come back to after day-tripping the island.
My only criticism was the bed which was practically floor level...very comfortable to sleep in but a nightmare to get in and out of in the dark while trying to be quiet for the baby!
We previously had nice contact via e-mail. Locally was a welcome letter and some snacks. The promised wine was missing. The toast of poor quality. You can simply call the landlord if it is needed. It has a direct dial telephone.
The apartment is located on a one-lane road. Quiet it is not. You can park right next to the stairs.
The furniture is selected appropriately and sometimes quality. The bed is bad, because it is a spring mattress. You can feel every little movement of the other person in bed. Otherwise, you have plenty of space.
To clean: under the bed was a lot of dust. The bathroom has mold on the ceiling. No wonder you can barely open the windows.
Directly at the house, it has thousands of mosquitoes. It is hard to come by car into the house without having to be stung. That was really bad. Otherwise, we had 14 days anywhere mosquitoes.
Quite honestly, we had expected something better for the price.
"Although this apartment is a one bedroom if traveling with one child just book the extra bed option which consists of a sofa bed in the lounge room. Our son loved it!"Read full review
