Rooms are quite small but reasonably comfortable. Quite expensive for what you get but then Skye is a fairly expensive destination. The main issue with the room was the soundproofing; there didn’t seem to be any. Part of the problem is down to inconsiderate guests holding conversations in the corridor, but the walls could be better insulated against noise.
We didn’t eat at the hotel, other than breakfast, but they seemed to do good trade so I guess it must have been fairly good. Disappointed that the cooked breakfast did not include potato scones and you were stuck with hash browns. I guess it’s cheaper to tip a load of frozen hash browns in a fryer than provide something more local and certainly tastier, but for all the difference it must make, why ruin a nice meal with something introduced to the country by an American fast food chain. Kippers as an alternative to the fry up would have been nice.
This is a good location if you are doing the Trotternish Loop. We were there for 5 nights and found all the staff to be very friendly and helpful.
The restaurant (and dinner) appeared quiet chaotic. On arrival, we were told to take a photo of the menus on the door as we wouldn’t be given one (everyone was told the same). This in itself was a very strange arrangement for a restaurant.
The range of food on offer was decent and varied. However, this is where the positives ended: our food was undercooked (red and bloody burger, still frozen chops, uncooked garlic bread soft and wet). While the options varied, the quality was very poor and the prices did not reflect the standard of food - for the quality on offer, the food is dramatically overpriced. Service itself appeared very chaotic; long wait times to be served, different people running in and out and not easy to know who the staff were as some were in a version of a uniform while others were in t shirts and sports leggings with trainers.
Breakfast was acceptable and offered a range of cereals, fruit juices, cooked items and toast. Tea and coffee were both available at the counter but bother were quite cold. The one complaint was the hash browns with the breakfast - they were served drastically undercooked and multiple tables around us were complaining of the same thing.
Our room was on the first floor, just above (and behind) the bar and entrance area. The room can only be described as basic, for want or a better word. A long, narrow space with two single beds squeezed in with the most basic of furniture and amenities, overlooking a flat roof and wall. The TV was so small that, due to the length of the narrow room, couldn’t be watched from one of the beds. This however, can be accepted but the real issue came during the night and early morning: the noise.
A key point to note is that there was only one plug socket for the whole room which, in this day and age proved problematic and was very surprising.
The bathroom was nice, clean and the shower was of a good quality.
Given the location of the room, any time someone walked through the corridors, let the main door shut or staff moved around, the noise could be heard to the point where our room vibrated. In addition to this, when nearby rooms used their shower and/or taps, a roaring noise appeared in our room. The overall noise level was appalling in this room and I assume it is due to the location. Sleep quality was very poor and we ended up deciding to get up at 4.30am as all attempts at sleep had been interrupted multiple times with banging, slamming and noisy pipes.
I am unsure of the lady’s name but the lady who served us at dinner and breakfast was a pleasure - she was friendly and helpful every time we spoke to her.
Overall, I can fully accept more basic facilities, although I believe prices for such rooms should reflect the condition, size and location of the room. However, the noise proved to be wholly unacceptable and, in hindsight, we would rather have stayed elsewhere as a result of this.
We called in for drinks. We really liked the place. The landlady is very friendly and welcoming. She is very particular in sanitising everything according to Coronavirus guidelines. The locals are extremely friendly ‘salt of the earth’ types. One of them introduced us to Bunnahabhain malt whisky. Thank you, Robbie! We will go there again when we are next on Skye.
The staff really friendly and attentive and the bar staff definitely up for a laugh.
Breakfast was excellent quality and served on both mornings within 8 mins of ordering.
Only dropping a star because it is a well used pub with a large footfall and as such along with some aspects of the accommodation is definitely looking tired in places (resteraunt area is in good order)
Would def recommend for value accommodation on a short stay.
Rooms are comfortable and the food is delicious with nightly specials. The hotel’s really well located in the centre of town and the surrounding countryside is just beautiful.
Thank you all!! X
