The Red Red Robin Cottage proved to be perfect for me and two mates travelling through Skye, being only a few minutes drive from the centre of Portree. We were greeted by very friendly hosts, the rooms were very clean and the beds very comfy. To top it off, the breakfast was amazing before we were on our way again the next morning.

We had a wonderful stay with Mary and Les at their beautiful house. The facilities and room were very comfortable, and homely, and it made our last night in Portree memorable. We honestly slept so well! The en-suite for our room was great - a highlight being how good the shower was! The breakfast was amazing, one of the best ones we had one holiday with home cooked treats. Location is good too, about a 10 minute drive from the centre of Portree but definitely worth heading a little out of town to stay in comfort. I would 100% recommend to anyone looking for somewhere to stay in the area!

As an added bonus, our hosts had an excellent knowledge of the local area and surrounding islands (Outer Hebrides) and were more than happy to share with us recommendations of where we could visit during our stay. The map on the wall as you enter their home will have you wanting to explore the whole of Skye!

I will 100% stay here again if I return to Skye :)”

What a place!! From the moment we arrived we were made most welcome by the whole family. Nothing too much trouble. A little gem of a place to stay with lovely views. Les was so knowledgeable about the area and pointed us in the right direction to several places of interest and places to eat. Lovely room with a separate bathroom solely for that room. Couldn't fault it. One point to note. Be sure to book your restaurants in advance. It gets very busy around Portree and walk ins are not always available.

The four of us (two adults, two kids) had a terrific two-night stay at the Garalapin. We stayed in the family room, which is large and bright (actually nicer I think than what is pictured on the web site) and fitted us quite comfortably. Breakfast was also quite good (and not just the eggs) and Clive and Sam were welcoming and immensely helpful (Sam merely saw our largish laundry bag and offered to do the laundry, which was a relief). Lots of maps, guides, and other information made altering our plans to fit the weather a breeze. I spent a fair amount of time looking for a place on Skye (looking for something to reasonably accommodate a family of four, which was surprisingly difficult given the large number of B&Bs) and I'm very glad I kept looking until I found this.

Although it's outside of town (which makes for quiet and nice views), the location is fairly central, just about 5 minutes drive from Portree which has a number of restaurants plus supermarket and shops. This was a good base even for our short trip but would be even better for a week, which became ever more obvious as we drove around the island; many destinations are within 40 minutes or less.

We spent one night at Garalapin House on a whistle-stop tour of Skye. The house is a couple of miles outside of Portree - the directions provided are good however I recommend arriving in daylight the first time to help you find your way. The accomodation is spotless and the rooms are homely and comfortable.

The breakfast was excellent - nicely cooked and a good variety with something for vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

Portree is close by and is well worth exploring. If you are looking for gifts, I can recommend Rocks & Crocks (jewelry and ceramics from the Uig pottery) and Skye Batiques (toys, clothes and household items made form beautifully patterned fabrics). The Old Man of Storr is a short drive away - parking can be a challenge and the walk to the viewing area is along a steep and sometimes muddy path however the views reward the effort!

You will need a car to get to Garalapin House but, given that, I would happily stay there again.

Booked here, outside of Portree because Portree full in summer. Not too far, although drive at night down single track road was a bit harrowing. Sam the owner was quite friendly and accommodating. Room was large enough. Problem was that, in our opinion, the room smelled like a locker room -- more like a hostel than a hotel. With midges outside, couldn't open the window. Perhaps we are too sensitive, but our subjective experience was not pleasant. Our other accommodations in Scotland did not have the same smell. Not our most comfortable night in Scotland.

When guests stay with me I do say that it’s no bother if they need me and always ask my guests how they slept to check everything is okay with them. It’s a shame you didn’t highlight the problem during your stay so I could have investigated the cause of the ‘smell’. It’s the first mention I have had of it all year before and after your stay so I’m still puzzled about what could have caused it. Midgies are a common visitor to Skye during the summer months and for some lucky folk they don’t get bothered by them, for others we have to suffer or use one of the many lotions on offer to protect yourself. I should point out that I am not a hotel but a small Bed & Breakfast offering just 2 rooms. I’m glad you found me accommodating though as it’s not usual for me to agree to a 9pm-11pm check in time. Sorry it was not your most comfortable night but hope the rest of your trip was enjoyable and you’re your journey back was safe and sound, best wishes, Sam

We are a family of four and stayed in the family room. The room was comfortable and had all we needed. We didn't mind the bathroom being separate (we have stayed in several places with this arrangement) and it suited us just fine (it didn't bother us having to walk through the small hallway-dining area wrapped in towels, and it didn't seem to bother the other guests who happened to be there; obviously we have no shame!).

Sam was friendly and welcoming and we had some lovely chats with her. She made sure the gluten/dairy-free member of our party was catered for, and kindly provided a small jug of soya milk each evening so they could have a cup of tea in the room (no mini-fridge at present). The breakfasts were tasty, especially the homemade granola and the tick-list idea for ordering is one we wholly endorse (it saves wastage for a start).

Skye is beautiful and we had a brilliant four night stay (marred on the final day by rain, unfortunately). We were sorry to say goodbye, both to Skye and to Garalapin. Would thoroughly recommend both as a holiday destination.

Many thanks for taking the time to write a review and your kind words. It was a pleasure to meet you and your family. I'm glad to hear you were happy with everything. It's no bother accommodating guests dietary requirements. I hope the rest of your trip went well (and the birthday celebrations) and not too rain filled! Thanks again and yes, please stay again if you come back to Skye, best wishes, Sam

Sam is lovely and our room was very comfortable. The two rooms are slightly separate from the rest of the house so it didn't feel like we were in her way. My kids enjoyed the trampoline and feeding the chickens. I liked the location a little way out of Portree. It felt like staying at a friend's house which is quite rare with a B&B.

NB our GPS took us to the house before so keep going one more house until you find it!

Thanks for your lovely review. Meeting new people each day is still something I enjoy even after all these years and it's lovely to hear guests are comfortable staying here. The play area & chickens are always a big hit as are the eggs we serve with our breakfasts. You know where we are should you ever head back to the island, best wishes, Sam
