We visited the Cuillin Hills Hotel in early Feb and on arrival the hotel (which is well sign posted, if a little indirect to get to), the car park is adequate and uneven, but reception staff were very friendly. We checked into our room (23) and the first thing we noticed was how dark the room was - there were side lights by the bed, but these need to be brighter and an additional standing lamp would be a big improvement. All the hotel info was on the TV, which had restaurant menus, opening times, etc, which was great. We booked a table for dinner on our first night and it was delicious. For starters, I had pickled beetroot, candied walnuts, and vegan feta with watercress. My hubby had beetroot & gin cured salmon, which he said was lovely too. Our main courses were disappointing though, I ordered fish & chips, the chips were burnt and the fish was greasy. My hubby ordered the mussels, which were delicious, but he said the portion was too large and required more bread to dunk. We actually joked the chef had gone home between courses as our starters were very delicate and delicious. Mains were more like average pub grub. The menu has fresh & exciting starters, and the mains were simpler tastes, more pub suited, we thought. The corridors in the hotel have beautiful lemongrass reed diffusers, which was just delightful (I even bought one at the Skye Candle Company to take home). The hotel has first-class cleaners, and the hotel was spotless. There is also a lounge area with wood burner & comfy sofas. Our room had a coffee machine but needs an instruction booklet. Took us ages to work out how it worked. There was also no fridge or A/C ( a fan is provided), so our room did get quite warm, and with traditional sash windows, it was quite loud with the wind. Really comfy bed, though. If you have dietary intolerances, be very cautious about staying at this hotel. I have a dairy and soya intolerance, which I told the hotel about when I booked. Therefore, I expected so much more. Their veggie breakfast was nice. However, they didn't have any veggie sausages, hash browns, or soya free bread...? Omitting these veggie items made my breakfast small but tasty. My husband went to the local Co-op and bought soya free bread and hash browns, so it's not like the hotel couldn't get them. On day 2 of our stay, I did get toast & my hash browns, but I had to ask for dairy free spread, which I would have thought would've come automatically with my allergen free toast Day 3 breakfast was as the day before with my additional breakfast items. On asking for my soya free bread for toast, this was presenting on our table in the same bread basket as the croissants as ordered by my hubby. Cross contamination people!! I appreciate that those that don't personally have dietary intolerances don't understand where some allergens exist, however I do feel that if a hotel asks you about any allergies and you inform them, the least they should do if offer food alternatives. Please train your staff about dietary intolerances, it's really important. …
