The Royal Hotel is based in the centre of Portree on the stunning Island of Skye. Our hotel offers a superb base for customers to the area with its convenient location. We have a selection of over 34 en suite rooms, most of which feature stunning sea views looking on to Portree Bay. We have two restaurants which regularly sell a variety of local produce from Langoustines, Scallops and Fish to Venison and regular Scottish favourites. Our hotel bar "MacNab's Inn" was famously the location where Bonnie Prince Charlie bode farewell to Flora Macdonald before making his way to France escaping the English army. With our rich history, convenient location and excellent rooms we are the perfect base for any visit to the beautiful Island of Skye.

Detailed Reviews
The room I stayed in was large and had a fantastic view of the harbour. The bed was too soft for my liking and lacked support. Needless to say, I had a few sleepless nights. Being outwith the tourist season, it was quiet enough during the day as well as at night with the windows opened. The room was too hot for my liking too and had to open the windows to ventilate. I think due to the coronavirus pandemic, there had been no housekeeping services during my stay. There are paper cups and a plastic spoon for making teas and coffees. The water pressure of the shower was good. The temperature can be changed to one that suits the person. Breakfast consisted of the typical items expected and had a good variety to choode from. All of the staffs in the establishment wore personal protective equipments.

The hotel has a great location but in high season getting parked nearby can be an issue and most car parks only allow 2 hours parking.
The bedrooms are a bit tired and my bed springs were fairly obvious although the bed was nice and big.
The shower was spacious and powerful and breakfast was hit and miss, rock hard bacon but a plentiful portion.
The bar is a bit rough and ready with sweary customers and staff.
The restaurant menu online is way out of date and prices have increased significantly since it was posted. The waiting staff could interact with customers more, in fact it would be nice if they actually spoke or asked how the food was.
All in all ok for work but not for leisure.

Room Tip:Â Parking near hotel is only a max if 2 hours, the long stay a bit further away but a short walk.

This hotel is ok, clean but nothing special. Just one teabag in our room and paper cups. Little things that make a difference. Breakfast was awful. My husband’s porridge would have been better used to fill cracks in a wall, he could hardly put his spoon in it. It was inedible. Service was slow too with just one poor girl trying her best. I would not recommend this hotel.

My wife and I stayed at Royal Hotel for 2 nights 30th/31st December 19, we arrived and had previously been quoted £70 at a nearby B&B without breakfast luckily for us we wandered down the road to Royal Hotel and we were quoted a double room with breakfast, at rear of hotel for £69, we looked at the room it was immaculate, we enquired as to availability for the following night as it was Hogmany, Hugh on reception kindly upgraded us to room 18 with harbour view without any price increase, (What a gentleman) he also took the time out to show my wife and I a map of Skye and places to visit a fantastic road trip the following day, Thank you so much Hugh. my wife and I are travelling to India next week and Maureen on reception was also super helpful by kindly printing our visa's off at reception, Thank you Maureen, Hugh and yourself are true assets to your employer we would have no hesitation in returning to the Royal hotel as everyone we encountered were absolutely so friendly and accommodating.
The breakfast was amazing and we had a beautiful sleep with superb views of the harbour a most memorable break we will both never forget XXXXX

This hotel is in a fantastic location, paying a premium gets you a large room overlooking the harbour and bay. The room was big and we were there for 2 days, the room was not serviced during the stay, yet other smaller facilities did, this was a shame as we had to request additional tea and coffee.
Disliked · Limited car parking and no details on the website about alternative car parks near the Hotel. The biggest disappointment was the breakfast on both mornings. On our first morning, I requested cereal followed by a full traditional, I had just taken my first mouthful of cereal when the server placed my cooked breakfast beside my cereal in front of me. I was going to leave it until I finished my cereal but my wife advised me to eat it now as it wasn't very warm, by the end of the plate every item on there was cold. The cereal had turned to slush and was inedible. The second breakfast was horrendous, my wife and I both opted for no cereals, to prevent a situation similar to the day before, and we both ordered scrambled egg with salmon. Wow, neither of us could eat the scrambled egg, it was part cooked egg, mashed up, greyish / black in colour and tasted burnt. When asked by the lady server if everything was OK with breakfast, she was shocked when we showed her the scrambled eggs. She took both away, apologised and said this should never have been presented. So £150 a night, no guaranteed parking and disastrous breakfasts on both mornings. Value for money, definitely not.

We stayed here after misjudging how long it would take us from Buckie, we thought we could do it in a day, how wrong we were, so I booked on the spur and we rolled up with a couple of toothbrushes and deodorant, we had room 18, it was great, overlooking the little harbour, the room was spotless and massive. The bed was comfy and the bathroom very big, the breakfast, what can we say, firstly what a lovely lady served the coffee, very friendly and chatty, the breakfast itself was fabulous!!! But beware its massive. I don't know why there are bad reviews on here, maybe we were lucky with the room and the view, but I would definately recommend it, and it's a lovely little village, and as for Skye, absolutely beautiful, we will be back!

This hotel is way too expensive definitely not value for money, very basic, bedroom was ok with views over the harbour and bed very large and comfortable but coffee cups were disposables much nicer to have coffee in your room in a proper cup which you can rinse out yourself and use again instead of having to go ask for another cardboard cup. Bathroom didn’t have shelving of any kind so had to keep your toiletries on the floor. Dining room was more like a school canteen and the food left a lot to be desired, had a waffle for breakfast but couldn’t get my fork or knife into it, asked for tea and toast but waited so long on it just gave up and there was only two other tables in. Can’t comment on evening meals as really didn’t fancy trying it so ate out. Beware if your elderly or struggle with stairs as there is no lift and no help offered to carry luggage up the stairs. Don’t really recommend this hotel if I was to go back I would try the Portree hotel.

Arrived early evening and parked up in the hotels convenient car park 20 yds away.
Hotel is located in a central position in the town and our bedroom had a lovely view over the harbour.
That's where the niceties cease. Our bed was very soft and lumpy, the hotel itself was very dated with very basic furniture. No hot water on last day. The general atmosphere around the hotel was non existent. Given the hotel were implementing good social distancing rules tbe dining room felt like being in a canteen.
Other hotels and bars had queues of people hoping to secure a table, not The Royal ! I wonder why ?

The only thing good about this hotel was the view from the bedroom window.
It is certainly not 3 star.It is the worst hotel we have ever stayed at .The windows would not open properly so difficult to get some air into the room.
It was so bad we didn’t even attempt to eat there. The restaurant was a very austere room.
We did speak to a couple of people who had eaten at the hotel who said the food was inedible.
We paid £110 a night it wasn’t worth half that.

I booked this hotel based upon reviews and the website. It was part of a tour of Scotland and at £237 per night one of the more expensive hotels. It managed to be the worse one by a long way. Breakfast was served in what can only be described as a works canteen and I am probably being unkind to many works canteens. The restaurant seemed to be closed which at least through the window had some light coming in. Access to the carpark was described as enter this code in, this turned out to be an old combination lock attached to a chain ! The whole hotel had a tired and dispiriting feel about it. We will not return and I would suggest there are better optiosn in the area.
