Detailed Reviews
Has clearly been recently refurbished. Good sized room. Nice exposed stonework.
Pros:
Modern, good sized rooms.
Very helpful, pleasant staff.
Good location.
Good food.
Room was quiet and included both a small electric radiator and a fan.
Good bar and restaurant.
Cons:
Wifi didn't extend at all to my room.
Electric shower pump noise could wake the dead.
Given the price they were charging, the mattress felt cheap with only a thin sheet covering it.
Room overlooked a small square and bus station. Again, given the price I'd have expected a better view.
Preference seemed to be given to passing traffic for space in the bar and restaurant. Residents had a lounge, but this didn't have its own bar and was significantly lacking in atmosphere compared to the main bar.
Three flights of fairly steep stairs to your room would probably become annoying after a few days.
In summary, very good hotel in the mid £110-120 range. However star knocked off due to the fact they're charging in the £180-200 range and the wifi is flakey at best.

What a novel way to continue serving meals and drinks during this pandemic. The Portree hotel have installed a number of greenhouses outside their hotel. Glass in all but one side allowing fresh air in but giving the guests privacy to enjoy their meal in a safe space. We booked a greenhouse and it comes with its own table & chairs, great heater, table lamp and Bluetooth speaker so you can play your own tunes while you dine. Food was amazing and staff great characters. And if you’re cold you can buy a clean fresh blanket for only £2. I saw the staff thoroughly cleanse these greenhouses. A great response to this ongoing situation! Well done The Portree Hotel!!!

Took our first trip to Skye and stayed in a deluxe king room at the Portree at the beginning of November. Stayed for two nights. Portree Hotel was in a great location on the square. Rooms was comfortable, quiet and warm and the bed was brilliant. Even asked what brand it was and where we could get one. Food came quickly after ordering and you could tell it was freshly prepared. The breakfast was whatever you wanted. Highly recommend the pancakes and bacon:-) All the staff were lovely and very helpful.
Sadly, two days here was not enough and we are looking forward to getting back to Skye. Would definitely look at this hotel first when it comes to booking.

First visit to Skye and stayed at the Portree Hotel. You arrive to congested traffic and roadworks. The hotel has no parking and no interest in whether you got parked or not. Instead the first demand is money up front.
We paid a premium for a super King room with a view of payable by the hour car park which you can only use for 2 hours then we moved it to the free car park about 5 minutes away. We decided to go for a drink in the bar and were sat at a table beside the toilets which was one of the most un Covid friendly tables ever. We were within touching distance of the person next to us with an inadequate plastic divider with gaps all over the place between us, I felt extremely ill at ease and after waiting about 20 minutes for our drink we enquired what had happened The young female sever responded that she forgot what we ordered. We drank up quickly and left to find a bar which I felt safer in. We had already booked for dinner and were relieved on our return to find we were seated at a more socially distanced table.
The staff are mostly very young and friendly. Fish and chips was nice enough. Our room (Kedrah)was above the bar/restaurant and we could hear everything, the sound proofing is non existent. I was relieved when it closed but my relief was short lived as then they started cleaning bashing about with absolutely no regard for anyone trying to get a sleep. Every step and creak is heard both below and above, it’s impossible to describe just how bad it is. I think I eventually fell asleep around 2am only to be woken early by our fellow resident above us moving around. You almost felt they were in the room with you. We had one more night here and asked to be moved but they said there was nothing available.
The room was very hot but if you open the windows you are faced with the traffic and general noise of a busy square. The second morning we were woken by the bin lorry at 6am, then the buses as the bus station is right under the window and start early, the noise was horrendous. The first breakfast we ate in the restaurant and my husband said the sausage was too thickly sliced and tough. We did enjoy breakfast in our room the following morning and this was better we both got the scrambled egg and smoked salmon which arrived promptly and was very nice. I’m afraid I would not recommend or return.

I had originally booked a small double room on the top floor which at the time had no access to WiFi and no hot water.
Within minutes, both issues were looked at - and although neither issue could be rectified at the time, staff were profusely apologetic and did everything they could.
Indeed, to my surprise, they refunded the entire nights stay and I was offered a room upgrade for the remainder of my stay. A complimentary drink was also offered from the bar - and this really demonstrated how professional and accommodating the staff were.
The rooms were impeccably clean and although I would’ve preferred a bath, the shower was spacious and came with shower products.
The breakfast was included in the rate and consisted of both a continental and hot selection of food. Both were delicious again service was excellent.
The noise from the bus terminal was a little distraction, but the hotels central position within the town made up for that. All amenities, bars, restaurants and takeaways are within excellent distance away.
I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who stays in Portree. It’s represents excellent value for money and the staff will go out of their way to make you feel very comfortable and welcome.

Great hotel in the heart of Portree. Very friendly staff. A little expensive when we went. Rooms were very clean and comfortable, shower could have been a bit more powerful. The restaurant/bar area downstairs was useful and they try to accomodate guests at the hotel as a prioirty.

We had lunch in the green houses outside the Portree Hotel, You need to queue at reception and wait to be seated. Didnt take too long. Entering the greenhouse we could see that the table had not been cleaned. We pointed this out and it was taken quickly care of. Lunch menu was the usual pub grub style of food. Watching customers come and go we noticed that Covid cleaning and hygiene procedures werent followed and most tabes received no more than a cursory wipe between guests. some were not cleaned at all. As we'd ordered some drinks whil being upon seated we stayed for these but declined to eat there and left.

Hotel is situated in the main square. Free car parking is situated 4 minutes away. Friendly, helpful staff.
We were allocated a third floor room which involved walking up over 50 steep steps each way.
The double room was very clean and small. There was a bed side light on one side of the bed. Made bed time reading tricky. The bed also had a low roof ridge above on one side of the bed which needed avoiding. There was spare floor for one "suitcase", the other was either infront of the room door or bathroom door.
Excellent fluffy towels.
The kettle is housed in a wooden tray where the heating element is balanced. Rather dangerous when replacing a half used heated kettle.
Breakfasts were in the main dining room. Contental breakfast offered the choice of cereals, smoked ham or sliced emmenthal. The bread choice was toast. The fruit bowl needed refreshing most days as it was rather depleted. The choice of cooked breakfasts was traditional, vegetarian, salmon and eggs, eggs with hollandaise sauce or waffles with bacon and maple syrup. The scrambled egg was flavourless, was always an even small size and was possibly from a reconstituted mix.
For £180 a night for two it was rather over priced.

Stayed for two nights. and having read the reviews, we expected the mixed bag it was.
First the positives… the hotel is in a great location, has a brilliant customer focussed team and a kitchen capable of providing brilliant food.
Then the concerns…our ‘cosy’ double was tiny, up three flights of stairs, with two small windows, a sloped ceiling that would challenge a contortionist, a diminutive shower room and only a stool to sit on.
Our impression is rooms, which all seem to cost the same, get smaller the higher you go. Maybe best value is on lower floors.
As suggested in the reviews sleep was hampered by noises from people outside but for us also by someone banging on a door nearby ( both nights), a noisy shower and a warring couple in an adjacent room,(one night ), a persistent owl and , at first light, a bunch of noisy seagulls.
Clearly such noises are for the most part beyond the hotels control but best be warned.
We had two dinners and two breakfasts. The first dinner was superb.. The full Scottish breakfast the following morning was therefore a disappointment. It was a true fry up and provided our fat ration for the year. We had a lighter perfectly acceptable alternative for our second breakfast. My second dinner was accompanied by a mushroom sauce with an equally generous annual salt ration .A bit frustrating because there is some really good food in there somewhere.
To summarise, good and bad in parts but to some extent the negatives are beyond the hotels control.

We were fortunate enough to be able to spend a few nights at this no-frills hotel over the Easter weekend. We have stayed here on a previous visit to Portree a few years ago. From what we can recall, the place hasn't changed much. Apart from the not so welcoming encounter when we first arrived at the hotel, most of the staffs are friendly. The hotel is located at the centre of town. It is convenient that there is a car park right outside, however a parking ticket may need to be bought. This depends on the time of arrival and the length of stay. In the event of no spaces, there is another car park which is a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel, again a ticket needs to be purchased. If travelling to and from Portree by bus, the bus station is right outside of the hotel. The room is simple but clean and tidy for our needs. Be aware that this hotel does not have an elevator but the staffs are happy to help with luggages as the rooms are spread over three floors. To minimise overcrowding and allow for social distancing, the staffs planned us in for breakfast. Breakfast consisted of the typical items one would expect and was sufficient to fill us till lunchtime.
