The evening wedding reception in the Torchfire was good, the suite was newly decorated and looked very classy. The wedding coordinator had been in regular contact with me and had ensured the right amount of tables and chairs were out.
The coordinator arranged the buffet for 120, which was bacon and sausage rolls, she also booked the DJ and arranged all payments.
The DJ was okay, he played the correct first dance but unfortunately announced us by the wrong surname.
We had 91 guests in total and the buffet for 120 was gone before they had all eaten. I was told that people took more than one roll, which was obviously going to happen, I had`nt realised they catered one roll per guest for our original number of 120 guests.
If I was made aware of this I would have asked for more rolls, luckily the cook was able to knock up some sandwiches and pizza for the unfed guests, for a small fee.
I got reports the next day that all the food was really good, which was good as I didn`t want anyone to leave unhappy or hungry.
I was asked if I wanted the wedding cake served with the buffet, I said yes to this. Obviously I expected the chance to cut the cake first in front of my guests, but this didn`t happen, I was given no apology or reason for this.
A relative made the centre pieces for the tables, I was asked if I wanted them back, but they disappeared.
The bar staff did a good job of taking the gifts and putting them in our room.
Apart from these issues the night in the Torchfire was a success.
The room however was a different story. It was nice and comfortable, but I paid extra for Prosseco, chocolates and flowers, none of which arrived. I spoke to reception who said I wouldn`t be billed for these, there was petals on the bed but this was something done as standard, not as an extra according to the receptionist. The Prosseco appeared after 1am when we got back to the room, which we were told was free of charge.
We had the room since midday and would have like it then.
One of the main selling points in the room was the jacuzzi bath, which didn`t work. Again I spoke to reception who said that its an old building and as yet none of the jacuzzi baths were wired in.
My guests in Room 8 complained that they had no hot water during their stay.
I have been told by the hotel since that there was no issues with hot water, but my guests have no reason to make this up.
My other guests complained the rooms were freezing and there was a lack of tea and coffee making facilities.
I received various emails regarding my issues, but only an apology for the DJ getting the name wrong, nothing else.
I would suggest that if anyone uses this place to check out the rooms thoroughly first before booking. Make sure you give detailed instructions to the coordinator and DJ to avoid any issues.
The Torchfire suite itself is perfect for a party and I would recommend that again.
I would have rated my review slightly higher, but the hotel and coordinator have refused to accept any blame for the issues during my event which were out of my control, but well within theirs.
Upon arrival I was greeted by a sign telling me to look in the bar if nobody was at reception.... great start. Eventually I find a woman pulling pints for the drunk locals. She ushered me back to reception and promptly sent me to my room with my key - the keyring was snapped/bitten in half. Straight away I was expecting the worst....
Upon entering my extremely small room I was slapped in the face by a warm/damp stench. Upon further inspection, it was obvious the room had not seen fresh air in a long time. This was reinforced by several moths hiding behind the curtains/peeling wallpaper.
Commodities such as a hairdryer and a 18'' colour tv were provided free of charge - it even had a remote!
The rest of the room was extremely dated - the furniture/fittings would look perfectly at home on the antiques roadshow! The place was thick with dust.
The bathroom was a disgrace - the showers were mouldy and when you switched the shower on, warm/pungent air from the sewers filled the room. Be sure to pack a couple of pegs if you decide to stay here.
When I tried to get some sleep, I noticed the bed linen had holes in it. On several occasions there was loud lager louts shouting/partying until 1am. If you are planning on working the next day - good luck!
As I lay awake on my first night I gazed to the ceiling above.... and noticed a sock over the smoke detector. I assume the previous occupier needed some 'wacky backy' to get some sleep....
Not to worry, the free breakfast will refuel your batteries ready for the day ahead.... think again! Avoid - but if you do attempt to find something edible, be prepared to be treated as an inconvenience at all possible times.
Overall the place was a complete shambles in every aspect possible. I've stayed in many hotels and I have never seen such disregard shown towards their guests.
Avoid.
