We took over the hotel for a weekend of walking and swimming in March 2017. The hotel could not have been more accommodating - food preferences, arrival times, etc. The hotel had only just opened for the year, but this is an historic gem - home to mountaineering history (where Sir Edmund Hillary and his team hung out while getting...

My fiancé and I stayed for a night, the service, food, accommodation and ambiance can't be faulted. This place oozes historical character and it feels like you are stepping back in time from the minute you enter, and all this is in the most wonderful part of the uk.

Wonderful old pub / hotel full of character, with friendly, welcoming staff. I stayed for two nights back in May 2016 and had a fantastic time. It wouldn't do for those looking for pretentious luxury but that is a huge part of its charm. Room was basic but absolutely fine, the food was very good, as was the beer and...

I've read the reviews of this place before writing my own and although most are positive, some are not. Mine is extremely positive. The Pen-Y-Gwryd is a little gem. Make sure you arrive for lunch between 12 & 2 or you won't get any. They may not even open the door. Also they close during the week in the winter...

A very quirky hotel in the heart of snowdonia. The food is excellent with extremely friendly staff. If you like the unusual go for it. The walking from the hotel is excellent with many other interesting places to visit close at hand.

The moment we stepped into the PYG the décor took us back to Darjeeling! There is a very similar hostelry there, The Windamere, which is like drifting back to an era when open fires, gloved waiters and eiderdowns were the norm in country hotels. The PYG doesn't quite have the gloved waiters but the dinner gong, the butter and marmalade...

There must be very few hotels which can boast a book written by their patrons. ‘Tales from the smoke room’, published this year, is a marvellous evocation of everything which makes this place a delight to visit, and includes chapters written by mountaineering luminaries and others with close connections to the P-y-G. High on the shoulder of Snowdon, remote and...

Whenever I go for a meal in a restaurant or a stay in a hotel for the first time I always research it or trust the recommendation of a friend whose opinion I value so I must say I am surprised at some of the criticism of the Pen Y Gwryd by people who clearly had no appreciation of the...

It is a hugely charming hotel with considerable history of climbing. But this is massively let down by two elements: 1). The bedrooms are tired: old mattresses and blankets, no duvets. (Plus no keys are given, hence security is non existent). If you ask for a key, there isn't one. 2). Meals are at set times. Breakfast is served at...

The rooms are clean and comfortable, but dated. We had ensuite facilities but my husbands found it easier to use the communal shower room, which is specially designed for those returning from a hard days walking in the rain! Love the 'eating all together' dining, and waiting for the gong to be sounded. Cos, dog friendly and relaxing, with some...
