Mount Rooms Hotel is frequently celebrated for its prime location near the station and Barry Island, with travelers often mentioning the convenience and cleanliness. While the rooms are generally regarded as basic and sometimes lacking in comfort, the hotel's service garners compliments for the staff's friendliness and helpfulness. The value proposition of the hotel is recognized by many, despite some grievances regarding extra charges and minimal amenities. The modern reception and cozy lounge are well-received, yet the atmosphere in the rooms could benefit from some updating and noise reduction.

We stayed here for two nights in September 2020. 4 friends, 2 double rooms; we played lucky dip on who took what room and left it as a surprise when we opened the doors. Our room was spacious and airy whilst our friends room was so tiny and very claustrophobic. The room was somewhat clean however in the middle of the night the top corner of the bottom sheet came loose and revealed a suspicious blood like stain on the mattress 😬 there was also a spider in our shower the whole trip as we was to scared to catch him. Decent size tv, kettle, coffee, tea, sugar, biscuits, towels and shower gel are provided. We paid £7ish for the breakfast which wasn’t good at all. The lady on reception said it was a continental breakfast with a ‘help yourself’ buffet. The continental part was some waffles and pastries, whilst the buffet was lukewarm soggy stuff. The coffee was like everyday value to. Least we knew the next morning to not bother getting breakfast even tho it was only £7. The walk to Barry Island is just over a 15 minute walk and it’s a decent afternoon out, however that’s all there really is to do in Barry. The walk to Barry train station was less than 10 minutes down the hill and the train to Cardiff was 20 minutes and £5:50 return. Overall for the price of £55 each for two nights wasn’t to bad, just fine details need fixing.

My family and I have just returned from a 3 night break at the Mount Rooms. On a positive note, the staff are delightful. Very helpful and always smiling. Now for the negatives!! We had 2 rooms during our stay, 1 family and 1 twin, my daughter and I stayed in one room, while my other daughter and 3 grandchildren stayed in the other. Housekeeping standards were well below par. First morning staff failed to service the family room, dirty cups were left in the sink unwashed, bin was not emptied, actually left in the middle of the room, unnoticed by me who promptly fell over it. Refreshments not replenished. Beds not made due to the fact apparently because there were items left on them, and due to Covid 19 they were unable to move them I get that, but a notice explaining this would be helpful. Day 2 was not much better, although they did put the bin back where it belonged. My 2 grandsons paid £5 each to use the Gym, I asked how long they were allowed to stay and was told by one staff member she thought it was 1/2 hour, whilst her colleague thought it was a full hour. On checking the room literature I discovered it was actually 24 hours. A case of the left not knowing what the right is doing. Breakfast was abysmal, we informed reception on check-in that we would require breakfast for 6. she wrote it down, job done. Following morning we turn up to be told you have to pay for it before you can be seated, nobody told us that. I just assumed it would be added to my room bill.On reflection we wished we hadn't bothered. No cereal, no yoghurt, no fruit, tea and coffee was in a jug on the counter, and it was difficult to distinguish which was which After voicing my grievances to a member of management, (who I must say was very apologetic) and possibly embarrassed by the whole situation offered us a complimentary drink in the bar. I was not looking for a freebie but accepted it graciously hoping my concerns will be taken on board. Will I return unfortunately not.

Booked here for 4 nights but cut it short as we had done all the sightseeing bits within that time
It is convenient for Barry railway Station and is within a 10min walk. Hotel is also not far from a bus route
Hotel rooms start from £37 a night not including breakfast
Staff were friendly, 24 hour reception
Bar open until 0100 with usual hotel prices for drinks
Room service available if you want it
Reasonable size rooms with lush thick carpets
Bathroom functional shame about the cracked sink. Powerful shower
No plug sockets by the the bed in our room so phones on charge the other side of the room
Lovely big white fluffy bath sheets
Limited parking at hotel itself but it does say that on the website
Would I stay again? Possibly if I was in the area as room price is cheap but unlikely I will go back to the Barry Island area again though - sorry

We booked a week here just before the Jubilee and wished we'd read all the terrible reviews first. The receptionist was surprised we had booked a week obviously because she knew how bad the hotel was. She had to show us to our room because it sounded like a trek to get there and it was! It's a good job none of us had any disabilities with the number of stairs we had to climb then she led us out the back of the hotel up some rickety wooden stairs around a corner into a separate building. On our first impression it looked clean and was spacious. I then went into the bathroom to find urine sprinkled on the toilet seat and a dirty bath mat hung up so had to clean up. We weren't able to lock our door from the inside so it would be constantly banging if you left the window open. There was no kettle in our room so we had to buy one from a nearby Asda. There was no full length mirror in the room but a tiny one in the bathroom. We got regular towels everyday but I noticed one looked like it hadn't been washed. The mattress was very uncomfortable to sleep on and gave us sore kidneys after a night's usage. The parking outside the front was on a steep hill and you were very lucky to get a parking space. We had to park on the pavement in front of the hotel to find a parking ticket on our wiper the next morning. The hotel didn't warn us about this because we told them we were struggling to get a space. The rooms were very noisy when people were staying in the room above us as you could here every movement. On the last few days before going home I was in the bathroom and could smell very strong cannabis. Later that evening the people above us decided to have a party, invited their friends, had loud music, were drinking and smoking weed. It was midnight and my husband complained and the guy on reception came over and knocked on their door and told them to keep the noise down then went back to have a smoke outside the hotel. We decided to leave at 1am in the morning because they were continuing to make lots of noise and we knew we wouldn't get any sleep for a long journey home. We would never stay in this hotel again - it makes Faulty Towers look good!

Overall it’s been a ok experience. We booked the king room which is nice and spacious, but with all the walls and furniture being white it feels very empty. The room could definitely need some more furniture putting in, and maybe some colourful wallpaper behind the bed to give it some colour. The carpet in the room needs a deep clean as it has quite a few stains on it. The shower leaked a bit. The breakfast we had was ok, £6.95 each for basically all you can eat, but some of the things didn’t look too appetising. One positive is that all the staff were very friendly and welcoming, and we had no problems in getting extra pillows for the room. Parking is limited, but it’s free street parking around the hotel so it isn’t too bad.

Me and my partner booked here for a one night get away we . We booked this over 3 months ago When I booked I phoned up to ask for a room with a sea view and they said they would accommodate this.

On arrival yesterday you enter into reception and it all looks very nice DON'T BE DECEIVED!!!! we got given our room number 16 well the cleaner must of spent all of 3 min in there this room was dirty when going into the bathroom the shower tray was all chipped as you can see from my photos there was no sanitary bin in the bathroom and the skirting boards was all chipped and marked and was filthy dirty.

When checking out which we did at 7.30 as I just wanted to get out of there and get home to have a shower in a clean bathroom. I explained to the lady on reception with the red hair about how disappointed we was she was extremely rude and advised me to fill in a complaint form but didn't give me one her customer services was something eles she didn't even care.

Me and my partner then left the hotel to go into the car park only to find our car had been blocked I by two cars . This was just the cherry on the cake!

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone even if you are on a budget as you would be better of sleeping in your car as it will be cleaner.

We stayed as a family of four in a family room at this hotel, after reading some of the reviews we was slightly apprehensive to stay here, However when we arrived after a 6 hr drive we was very pleasantly surprised. There is very limited parking outside the hotel so we didn’t manage to get a space but that’s fine as we got street parking straight outside, the hotel room was lovely, clean and warm. A nice big tv and a very powerful hot shower. We didn’t eat here so I couldn’t rate that but for the two nights we stayed we thought it was great value for money, we did bring our own pillows from home after reading other reviews saying they only provided one pillow per person which is fine, I’m sure reception would of provided some if need be. The staff were all very smiley and cheerful, even the cleaners in the morning said hello and good morning to us. The location was fantastic, a close walk into Barry island seafront and great pubs and restaurants.
Overall I highly recommend the hotel and would say it was great value for money.

We booked a retirement afternoon tea & had a few dietary rang to make sure they could cater for vegans as only states on website vegetarian. Was told no problem. Rang a few days before and was told vegan food would look different but would be separate. Great! On the day we were asked who was the vegan & vegetarians about 3 times. Tea and coffee arrived, coffee tasted nothing like coffee, brown water, food stared to come out. No vegan or veggie food arrived at our table. Waited and waited, went and asked where the vegan & veggie food was, kept being told that all food had been given out. The vegan & veggie food had been placed on the other table despite the servers knowing we were on the other table. Asked again about our food only to be told that they could make some more but didn’t have much left! I declined because by the time it got served we would be leaving…I asked for a refund, was told they would speak to the manager, who takes the weekends off, they’d come and tell me what to do next. Did anyone come and speak to me? No don’t be silly! I wouldn’t eat at Mt Bistro as servers had no idea about dietary needs, they were new to the job and by the looks of it had zero training, the food that I saw was thrown together, I would worry about anyone with allergies eating here! Have rung and emailed only to be told that it wasn’t their fault the food was served to another table, they had done enough to offer to make more food so no refund! On what should have been a lovely afternoon myself and another lady went without food! I have tried to email but my emails are being ignored! Stay clear of this place!

Me and my partner booked 3 night as a get away after all this covid stuff

It was supposed to be a nice and chilled get away

It was anything but because of this "hotel"

First of all, the website promised a sea view, which we didnt have at all.
The website also said it had free parking on site, which while technically true, has about 5 spaces for the whole hotel.

Getting into the hotel, the staff are very standoffish and unhelpful. It took 15 minutes for them to even see us at the front desk.

Getting into the room, it was disgusting is the only way to put it.

Mold on the walls and windows, windows were painted shut.
Bed was old and had springs sticking out.
Bathroom has rust and mold on the walls.

During the night, wind would make the windows shake and rattle very loud because theyre so old and no care was given to them at all.
Get to 7am in the morning and construction begins outside right next to our room.

The staff would not help with requests for extra pillows, a fan because it was hot and the windows do not open, and just overall, please if you value your get aways do not come here.

Me and my partner left a 2 days early and have asked the mount rooms for a refund, which they are refusing to give due to their cancelation policy which means you can only really cancel before you get there, which is a joke. How are people supposed to know how truly bad it is before arriving.

I will quote them directly on the construction work.

"We will investigate your noise complaint further. Of course regardless, something like this is out of our control; rest assured you wouldn’t have purposely been put in this area of the hotel. It is simply not feasible for the hotel to shut off areas of the hotel, due to outside construction work/noise, especially in this current economic and social climate."

Basically blaming a pandemic on putting paying guests into an unstable room with ongoing construction, when I puilled them up on this, this was the reply.

"We cannot be expected to close areas of our hotel due to construction work going on outside the hotel, at any time of the year, regardless. This is not feasible or doable for any business in operation, as you can understand. "

This is just absolutely dispicable, this means that even if it is a horrible stay, they will still take your money.

They are now lying saying they offered to change our rooms which is a complete lie, this never happened.
We had to walk around to hotel to even find 1 staff member to come to reception to check us out, and all she said was sorry, half heartedly at that.

See the attached pictures for yourselfs, and do yourself a favour and stay away from this place. Unfortunetly I cannot add a video here, but rest assured the constructon is very loud.
A travelodge is the same money and a better stay. that says a lot.

It’s very average. Yes there is a nice bar, the kids playroom in the bistro was a nice touch too, yet not really as described on website. Bed extremely uncomfortable ( could feel the springs) and pillows were so hollow (even after requesting two more). There is not a cooked breakfast as advertised, nor is there parking as advertised (only 6 spaces). It is also up a very steep hill, so worth noting if having to park on nearby streets. If you are lucky to park, the driveway is awful; uneven, massive pot holes and sloped. Also each side of the entrances is littered with fag butts.

There is no information anywhere in the room or on the website regarding check out or the fact that if you don’t BOOK breakfast, despite enquiring about it, you cannot have breakfast. That really was the final straw for me, especially with a child. I had already received terrible communication prior to booking with no confirmation details as I requested multiple times, no- one seems to know what is going on, let alone the guests.

The bathroom and room was clean, fluffy, clean towels, but a ridiculous tiny space between shower screen and sink, so hard to open. Only 1 satchet of coffee in room (bring your own if you want a drink!) A hair dryer is provided, but no nearby mirror on the dressing table, which really bugs me. How are you supposed to style hair? The corridor hallways smell very bad with stinking carpets.

If the mattresses were soft and comfortable, decent pillows provided and a cooked breakfast as advertised, I would say it was perfectly average for the price.

Thectrain Station is a 5 minute walk from the hotel past a weatherspoons on the way if you need refreshment. It's about 11 miles probably £30 by taxi and £5 by train.

We have now booked this hotel several times to visit my uncle and n have never had a problem.....Even my mum (81) has booked without issue. The hotel does have some new staff, but we have found them as equally accommodating as existing staff....Would recommend to anyone visiting the area for any occassion.
