Detailed Reviews
We just stayed at Refugio de Sol for 2 nights. I stayed in a suite with my 2 kids. The photos on the website make the "suite" look a lot bigger than it really is. I know that's the case with a lot of hotel photos, but our room was not a suite at all-- and there was no privacy for the shower from the rest of the room. Refugio de Sol bills itself as B&B, and plays down the hostel part, but it definitely has a hostel vibe and a more hostel-oriented clientele, so if that's what you expect, it will be great for you.
We also had a really hard time sleeping... I've traveled to 50 countries, mostly in Africa and Latin America, and the loud rooster near Refugio de Sol is the loudest I've ever heard. Even with earplugs and a pillow over my head, I kept waking up. The positives were that the room was clean and the staff were very nice and responsive. Refugio de Sol should sell itself for what it is, a hostel with some private rooms.

This is a rare breed of hostel that combines superior accommodations with a laid back hostel vibe. Note that the Refugio de Sol and Hostel San Pancho are the same place - Refugio de Sol is private rooms on the 1st floor and Hostel San Pancho is dorm-style accommodation on the ground floor. Refugion de Sol is more like a boutique hostel. Both share a common area with kitchen and buddha-style chill out space, the highlight of which is a 5m long low table cut from one tree trunk.
The hostel is located on the main street, but in a quiet part of town, about 5 mins walk from the centre and 10 mins to the beach. Bikes/trikes are available for free if the walk is too strenuous :-).
The rooms are simple, but nicely appointed. There are basic and standard (same as basic but with air conditioning) rooms plus 2 larger suites with private balconies. The rooms on one side have light, the others just face onto a corridor.
The staff is fantastic and will cater to your every need! I really felt like part of the family. The village itself is incredibly laid back. It's so safe - you can leave your bike unlocked and no-one will take it. Make sure to check out the organic market on Tues- awesome food, art and music!

We stayed for 5 nights in the private room with balcony. First of all, it was really nice that they called us when we were still on our way since I didn´t had a cu that they close the reception at 10pm. We had an evening flight and then took a bus but we made it. The room was good in size but there we not that much space for your clothes etc. It was cleaned every day which was really nice. The breakfast was light but ok. The service level varied quite a lot.. It was also said that we can settle the stay via Paypal but I had to ask several times to get the link. Fee wifi was not working in our room at all.
All and all, I think the price level in San Pancho hotels is qutie high so I think the price in this hostel is bit higher than we would normally pay.

If you want security, don't go here. There are no locks on the door or windows and no lockers. It's also noisy and right on the main street. The owner was very rude to us and kept running us around about our refund (I had to make 3 in person return visits and listen to an insulting lecture in Spanish each time), finally charging a higher rate than agreed upon for the one night we were forced to stay there.

I knew going in this was not a luxury hotel by any means, but I was hoping that previous positive reviews meant I was in for an overall pleasant experience.
I stayed in one of the private rooms upstairs, not the hostel. The room was OK except that the windows opened to the public hallway, meaning the only way to truly secure the room was to close the windows, resulting in a hot stuffy room. There were also no screens on the windows, and my room had a lot of different bugs, including the biting variety.
Finally, water was a big problem. I guess they regular shut off the water supply in this town. If a hotel has a good reserve tank, you would never know. I had booked 3 nights at Refugio del Sol and left after 2 because I had water in my room maybe a total of 6 hours the whole time. This means not only could I not shower, but I couldn't flush the toilet. When I did have water, the shower was freezing cold. I am not sure if my experience with the water was unusual.
I will say management was nice and helpful and when I left due to the water issue they gladly refunded my final night.

This is a simple hostel-like hotel. Slightly worn down at the edges, but clean and great breakfast of fruit and homemade muffin.
The "Suite" is not worth the $$ because there is a rooster about 10 feet away in neighbors yard which starts crowing at 3am! I'm all for roosters and backyard animals - plenty all over Mexico- but this particular room should be renamed " suite de Gallo" ! So if you care to sleep past 3am, do re-consider - earplugs are useless.
Apart from the high price for the "suite", other rooms are reasonably priced.
The front desk folks, Julia and Alejandro were terrific. Helpful and very friendly.

I read quite some reviews before this trip and was amazed by all the crappy places and the robbery stories. We chose this hotel since there were no "incredibly amazing" English reviews, but only Spanish ones, and hit the jack pot.
First challenge when driving into town was finding the place. Since house numbers seem to be overrated (or totally random). We were really surprised how beautiful that place is on the inside. Very welcoming lounge area, the kitchen/bar area in the middle and the rooms to the sides. Friendly warm colors, clean and spacious.
Sol and Alex are very charming hosts and did everything to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The breakfast, which is even included in the price, is excellent. Thanks to their affinity with organic food, the vegetarian way of life and ecological awareness, we enjoyed very nicely arranged fruit platters, cereal, grain bread, delicious tea and coffee. They even have filtered water in the kitchen, so we could safely fill our water bottles and avoid more trash.
The walk to the beach takes about 10 minutes, but you pass nice little shops and food stands and even at night this little town is nothing to worry about. We felt totally safe at all times.
The minimalist rooms (bed, 2 nightstands, 1 armchair, mirror, cloth rail, bathroom with shower, toilet, wash basin) have everything one needs and not more. The window blind makes it dark enough and the windows themselves have screens. The shower is neither warm nor cold, but for this hot weather that was no problem at all. The room we were in was equipped with a ceiling fan, that was not able to get the heat out at all. This might be the only downside to it, we slept rather fitfully due to heat and roosters next door. But hey, that's Mexico, no?
All in all a great place to spent some relaxing days in a nice Mexican pueblo. Might come in handy to know some words of Spanish, tho.
We will be back some day!
MuchÃsimas gracias a os dos y mucha suerte para os tres!

We are in our late 60s so the distance of the walk to the heart of town and the beach was too far. It was definitely further than they told us. If you're young and want to hike back and forth, it would be a good, basic, clean place to stay. The breakfast was healthy, the common room great, WiFi not always so great, staff friendly.
When we saw how far it was, they were gracious let us pay one night and then find something closer to the beach. They also let us borrow their tricycle to get our bags to the next place.
There WAS a lock on the door, no lock box however.

I found this hostel/B&B through sayulita.com as I am traveling in that area and wanted to check out some small towns along the coast. Booked a room easily online, and found the hostel no problem, its on the main road as you first come into town. I am so glad I came here, both to stay at Refugio de Sol and San Pancho itself.
I love the energy of the town, so much nicer and more "real" than some of the touristy party towns around here. The main street has great shops and restaurants, and of course the beach is beautiful. The community center is worth mentioning as well... definitely worth a visit with its own shops and restaurant. You really get a sense that this is a community that cares.
Ok, but the hostel/B&B itself is also great. I got a private room and bathroom up stairs, and there is a dorm area on the main level. Price cant be beat...and includes a very nice vegan healthy breakfast, homemade wheat free bread, fruits, coffee and even fresh coconut milk. Delicious! Also they have filtered water you can help yourself to, and free wifi in the common area. Place is clean, bright and I would gladly stay here again when I visit.

Really nice place, location is far from everything but what's far? When everything is 5 min walk!
Super clean, awesome staff and cool design, I totally recommend it!
They also have bikes, longboards you can use if you need to move around, kitchen and all common areas are clean and available for everyone.
