Spent three nights. Used public bus to and from airport. Hotel short simply walk away.
Rooms on first floor. No lift. Quiet and comfortable. Basic breakfast. Special praise for low skilled employees. Found plenty of good food places on nearby Main St. near
theatre district.. Would stay again.

Based on previous reviews, I thought this was a quaint, clean, high-service hotel. In actuality, it was an outdated, scary place (at night). The room layout was o.k, but the sheets had stamps on them from the Harris County Dentention Center- used sheets from the jail! The folks working there were very nice, but I would never send a female there due to safety concerns. The reviews are great because the propietor bribes guests with very discounted rooms for good TripAdvisor reviews.

My wife and I bought tickets to see Bob Seger in concert on Valentine's Day this year at the Toyota Center in downtown Houston, Texas. I figured that I would book a room for one night (Saturday) as close as possible to the arena to avoid paying for parking and the headache of trying to fight traffic to get to the venue. Plus, thought it would be nice to check out any local hangouts or eateries.
I should have checked here first before booking the room.
First off let me give the positive qualities of the hotel.
The room was clean for the most part. 2 beds that were comfortable. full kitchen. Free WiFi.
Here's the bad.
Booked the room 2 weeks in advance. Called on the Friday before leaving San Antonio to check on our reservations (booked and paid in full through hotels.com). Spoke to a woman (Anna) and she confirmed our stay. One room, one night, two guests. Check in at 3 PM.
Got to the hotel at 3:15 Saturday afternoon. Luckily, the pay parking lot next to the hotel (more like a motel) was empty so I left the wife in the car in case she had to move it.
Went inside to check in and GM (I guess, never got his title or name) was speaking very loudly in a foreign language to someone over the phone. the desk clerk, a nice, but creepy sort of fellow took my driver's license and shuffled through a stack of papers and couldn't find my reservation. Then looked on the computer (why they use paper I'll never understand) and "found" my reservation but had to talk to the gm. Then desk clerk got a call back (apparently) from someone concerning ordering 39 inch flat screen tv's. Lost his attention for the rest of check-in.
The gm kept telling me that the room had not been paid for. nor was there a credit card number. I gave him my confirmation info from hotels.com and he printed out two sheets and said,"See, its right here. Room not paid for.". Told him that it wasn't my concern and he should take it up with hotels.com for payment. Kept insisting on a credit card number, which I would not give him (never did). Finally got a room (on the second floor and no elevator) after half an hour. asked the gentlemen where to park. "Oh, you can park next door but since there is an event they'll charge you $20 to $30 OR you can park in our lot for $15 until check out tomorrow. It's only 3 blocks away." Took the deal, lousy as it was. and turns out its an open small lot with broken glass in a couple of spaces.
We walk back to the motel and there's another couple going through the same routine that I went through at check-in.
Walk up the stairs and get to the room. Flashing "OPEN" sign in our window. unplugged that bad boy. Window blinds were difficult to impossible to open. We unpacked pretty quickly and headed out for a bite.
If you like to overpay for beer, there's a House of Blues with a couple of blocks and some high end restaurants just a little further down. Being Valentine's Day, you needed reservations. this is nothing to do with Athen's Motel, just sayin'.
Found a food truck venue a few blocks away. it was okay. nothing impressive. But there was food. Ran into one of the couples having trouble checking in. They were from Lafayette, La. and the husband's company had the motel (refuse to call it a hotel) as a "preferred" stay??? Long story short. They "lost" their reservations and had no room for them. They were in town for the Bob Seger concert, as well. They said they'd probably just drive back same night.
By the way, when we got back to change for the concert....guess what? Yep, someone else having trouble checking in.
Rest of evening went great! Great concert!! only a couple blocks back to the motel. Got in late so one beer and straight to sleep.
Got up in the morning. Went to make coffee. opened the lid on the 2 cup coffee maker and found that there were still grounds (moldy) left from the last guests (i presume). There was supposed to be a "breakfast" but with all the trouble here - we decided to skip it and grab iHOP.
Walked down to check on the car to make sure it hadn't been broken into. Forgot to mention, the motel sits 2 blocks from a Salvation Army that provides overnight stay to transients. Homeless literally all over the place.
Went back to the room to grab our stuff and put in the car and pull around to pick up the wife and told the same to guys from the night before that we'd be checking out. the older man (gm) tells the creepy guy,"give him that paper, we need a credit card.". The same freaking conversation starts up again. No "thanks for your stay", No "how was your stay?", No concern whatsoever about us as guests. Just "Where's my money?".
Went and got the car, loaded the luggage and, again, told the guy to talk to the booking site. IF he didn't want to deal with online reservations then he should not be involved with sites like hotels.com.
Long story, I know.
Let me say this. IF you're in Houston and are going to the Toyota Center Arena for a game or concert and want to stay conveniently close? DO NOT, I repeat...DO NOT stay at this MOTEL. it's not worth the hassle. Stay at a reputable hotel a little ways away. you can find plenty of parking the night of the event within 7 blocks of the venue. By the way, there isn't really a whole lot of anything close to the arena. from the looks of it, it's the rougher part of downtown.
Again, avoid this place. its really, really not worth the trouble.
The only reason that I gave this place 2 stars was, free wifi, fairly clean and conveniently close to arena. but the experience with the staff was terrible...horrible. I'll NEVER be back and will tell everyone that I know to avoid this place.

We arrived for our reserved 3 pm check-in. It took 45 minutes to get checked in. During check in, the electricity went out for about 15 minutes and staff said they were running a "test". Once I gave them my credit card (room was advertised at $125) and got receipt the payment was approx $185. They charged a $40 miscellaneous fee and it was a $20 parking fee. Parking lot was 2 1/2 blocks from the hotel. Hotel has no elevator and the carpet inside the room and outside on stairs and hallway was not really clean. Air conditi tion in our room was really noisy and bathroom light was really dim. When checking in I let staff know we had a reservation at a restaurant .06 miles away and asked if they could take us. They said "yes no problem". At 540 I went downstairs and asked if they could take us and they said no one was there to take us. Then the hotel staff drove up to the front. After much back and forth conversation, they finally said ok get in the back seat of the pick-up truck. Once we were in the truck (it was hot with no AC running, the front desk clerk ran out to the truck and asked if it was ok to charge my credit card $15 for a ride to the restaurant. The truck driver was on the phone doing what sounded like a drug deal with someone. We got out of the truck and called UBER! I have been in hotels traveling around for decades and have Never ever experienced service so poor. There was no iron in the room and my wife had to wait 45 minutes to get an iron after going up and down the stairs a couple of times to keep asking for an iron. I could go on but just know the hotel was not fit and staff was certainly not interested in making your stay comfortable

Ask for a cheap welcome beer. If you go for an event in the toyota center, you are at two minutes walking, no other hotel with the same price you can access.

Ask for a cheap welcome beer, water its free, but a really iced corona to start its priceless.

The whole building smelled and was musty. The room did the job but the basis of my horrendous rating was the treatment I received from the manager (owner?). When I showed up at 8:45 he didn’t tell me the parking lot they use 4 blocks away closes their gate at 9pm. So when I went back down at 9:05 to ask for directions to the lot, his son (and assistant?) told me “you won’t be able to park there anyway.” On the bright side there’s plenty of free street parking 6pm-7am. The downside, I had to wake up at 7am to move the car. But the cherry on top of a 3 star stay which turned it into 1, was that as I loaded my last bag into the car, and saw the manager outside I asked to check out, he then proceeds to start accusing me of flooding our room and causing a leak through, not only the room, but exterior of the building and “ruining” his truck. I asked him how I was responsible for the buildings plumbing and he walked up to the room with me and then said “this has never happened before! You overflowed the tub!” I said we only took showers, to which he responded “you don’t use shower curtain?!” Then he rubs the floor with his hand and it was moist due to the shower I had taken that morning and the steam buildup due to the lack of fan in the bathroom. I was taken back simply because I have never seen, experienced or heard of a hotel guest being treated this way. Receiving angry accusations out of nowhere simply as I packed my car. Next time I’m in Houston I will save my money and have a much more pleasant stay at a Motel 6 or Super 8.

I walked into the lobby and it smelled and to me it looked like a rundown check cashing store. No way was I going to stay here. When I booked it on Expedia I didn’t see the non refundable note. I can only surmise it is non refundable because it is the only way they can make money when people see it and walk out like I did.

!! Don't bother. This is not an accommodating hotel/motel. Do not listen to anything they say they will provide to you. Best stay away. Hidden and insane fees everywhere. Parking is not worth it and despite them saying you'll be accommodated, they still manage to screw you over. Disgusting place and the least welcoming staff. Within the first couple of minutes the staff assisting us goes outside and talks to her friends and you can hear the staff being inappropriate and unprofessional while within earshot. The man who "assisted" with parking is a total unprofessional misery man who shouldn't be in an industry about customer service. Oh, that's right because this place isn't about customer service it's about trying to scam you every which way possible.
Ending up leaving at 3am when the owner threaten to kick us out after being belligerent and ignorant.

Vacationing here a few days. I immediately accidentally parked my car in a parking lot that I thought was the hotels, and I got a ticket. The guy at the desk genuinely sounded like he was sorry about it and helped me out. There were a few hiccups here and there but everyone here has just been really nice and accommodating. Every concern I have had so far has been met. Definitely worth the stay so far. Highly recommend.

I found that I had left some very important papers in my room at the hotel upon arriving home. The hotel management did find these for me and allowed my sister who lives in Houston to pick them up for me. Thank you very much for the assistance with this. Everyone I spoke to was very nice. It was much appreciated.
