An excellent country escape: half a dozen of us celebrated a special occasion together and our night and day at the hotel felt like a little holiday. When we had a dip in the pool we were brought chilled wine and extra towels. When we asked to push back the time for our dinner reservation to swim longer it was no trouble. And when I confessed to having a ridiculously long list of food intolerances, I was provided with a perfectly adapted starter and main course for dinner in the auberge, and lovely natural almond milk at breakfast. All the staff were really friendly and genuine. Couldn’t be more happy and can’t wait to go again.

We were a party of 5 adults with 3 rooms. Our stay at the Hotel de I'llwald was a standout during a 2-week trip. It's in an idyllic location, just outside of town, with easy access to major roadways. Our rooms were charming and comfortable. Dinners were delicious; waitstaff were welcoming and helpful. They made wonderful recommendations of Alsatian wines, for example. But the real treat? Breakfast. Real care had been taken in putting it together. We enjoyed the most delicious freshly made yogurts, breads, jams, cheeses -- you name it. Fresh fruit in season. Hot pot of delicious coffee. It set us up for full days of exploring. Well after our trip, folks in our party would say: "You know what was great? The Hotel de I'llwald!" And it was.

This was the second stay at Auberge de l'Illwald. This little family hotel has been very well refurbished and partly newly built a few years ago in the local style and materials. The pool side is beautiful and calm.
The rooms are charming with all comfort you expect.
We stayed twice for dinner in their own restaurant which is also very popular for locals, with local dishes however with a nice twist.
It's a pitty they are very close to a national road, but in the end you don't have any downside of it.
Breakfast is very qualitative in a nice decorative room.
The owners do everything themselves and they are typically French I guess, reserved and friendly "ma non troppo" :-)
We will certainly go back and advise friends and family to go and visit.

Today we wanted to spend the night at this hotel, unfortunately we were not welcome while we have labradoodle dogs that do not shed etc. it seems good to adjust the site to that only 1 (small) dog is allowed. Whereas now it says they are welcome. Missed Hospitality opportunity.

Dear Sir. We read your comments about our refusal to receive you in our hotel in the same room with your three labradors with great attention. It’s not difficult to understand that it is not possible to impose the presence of three large dogs under any conditions even if they are the kindest of companions. Best regards. Hotel management.

We decided to take advantage of Alsace and its great food and stayed in the l'Illwald. According to the French Tourism associatian this hotel qualifies for a three star rating. We arrived at 13.30 and were told that our room was not yet ready. Oh, I forgot we had first to ring two different bells before someone appeared and told us that the other quests just had left and that the rooms would be normally accessible from 15.00 onwards. No big deal as we decided to use the nice court yard and to have a lunch which met our expectations. At 15.00 we returned, and we had to go through the process of ringing two different bells so that someone appeared and opened us the door. By then I started to become slightly sensitive that no one ever seemed to be in the reception.
We continued to enjoy a great day, and upon our return (we had a luxury room for 125E) and, yes, we had to wait for a receptionist to turn up, we found that it was very hot in our room approx 27 Degrees Celsius. So I tried to switch on the air conditioning, a characteristic highlighted in the description of our 'luxury' room. After 10 min, I still had not been successful and called up the operator. Finally I was told because summer had come so unexpected (we were the 5th of June) that the owner decided not yet to switch off his heating system. So the air condition would not work. 'And by the way', I was told,' tomorrow the temparature would drop another 5 degrees, so there would be no reason to change this!? '. Open your windows and create some air circulation was the good advice given.
We followed the advice and realised that the Illwald is a crossing of two major regional axes, and the cars driving by showed little regards to our noise sensitivity. What a long and hot night!
Would I recommed this hotel. Definitely not, better spend your money on a tent. You know that there is no receptionist and air condition included.

Nice rooms, some quite small, but well done. Friendly people, family feeling (including the laziest dogs i ever saw), had a very very nice room. Service is good but a bit distant, on the other hand they really leave you alone if you like this. After dinner I wanted to retire and take the rest of the bottle, corked with me home to finish next day. The landlord provided me with a cardboard bag, a stopper, and a glass (if i would change my mind and drink some more of it in my room). Far away from everything, so very calm and relaxed, but not the place to go out for a walk.

This used to be a delightful restaurant but what a disappointment!
To summarise:
# food is served fast, 10minutes after order, this makes you wonder what sort of real cooking is happening in the kitchen.
# my 24 euro main was a hard piece of meat. My dad got a veal tongue which was also very hard and unappetising. There was little food on the plate. Fine dining presentation but not delivering on taste.
# we did not get the side we ordered. The sauce came 5 minutes after the main.
# the most annoying thing was that when we returned one main back the kitchen we were advised by the waiter that the cook tried it and NO it was really ok. Honestly what restaurant is telling guests what they should think of their food?
This is an overpriced restaurant that is living on its past glory, stay away from it!

We stayed 4 days here during a hot part of June 2019. The hotel is beautifully maintained and our room and the others we saw were elegant and included interesting stylistic features. There is a very good swimming pool and spa area which helped with several days in the high 30s. Our room had a loft (#9) which although beautiful I cannot recommend if the weather is hot, as the loft stays very warm at night. There is air conditioning, but it cannot cool the loft effectively. We actually pulled our bedding and slept on the floor below the loft level to stay cool one night. There are also a lot of stairs to reach this room. Breakfast is very good and presented in a lovely room off the "front desk". It is on the expensive given limited hot offerings. The restaurant is near exceptional and the chef is the owners son. It is beautifully decorated, and service is efficient. We had three different main courses as well as entrees and all were very good to excellent. Wine choices were very good and reasonable. On several of the nights there were organized get-togethers in the courtyard outside the restaurant. These sort of "took over" the area from the guests, but it is a beautiful setting and I can imagine its popularity for organizations. The location is outside of Selestat and on a main road, but it is very quiet at night. The owners-operators are very nice people who do all they can to help you with their stay. When we were there we appeared to be the only english-speaking guests.

This was our fourth visit to this hotel, we stay there whenever we can get a room in order to break the journey between the UK and our house in Italy. It is our firm favourite in the area and I find it hard to understand why it is not a 4*. Beautifully appointed rooms, excellent beds and bed linen not to mention a superb breakfast. This time we stayed for 3 nights and enjoyed the friendly recommendations of the owner with respect to restaurants, wineries and places to visit. The attached restaurant is also brilliant. They are very dog friendly and there are plenty of places nearby to enjoy walks in the woods. Very highly recommended.

This will interest travelling dog owner. This hotel is announced for accepting pets. I booked a junior suite and announced my three little dogs. All together are smaller than one Labrador.
I received first the confirmation and later a flat refusal for me and my companions. I suggest for every dog owner travelling in this area to look for an other establishment.
