Detailed Reviews
The ranger, Eric, is very welcoming. He keeps a pristine park with a concentration on safety. We had a very relaxing time. The whole area was quiet. Our friends brought their kayaks to paddle from the Cornish bridge to Wilgus. I enjoyed the breeze off the river on a very hot day.

Really helpful, friendly Ranger on site and as with all Vermont State Parks, it's kept really clean and tidy, sites, bathrooms, facilities etc. Wood and ice are available at the Ranger station and they will deliver the wood. The pavilion at the office/Ranger Station has tables and wifi, also an electric outlet to charge up a tablet, phone or computer if needed. I had great cell service (Verizon) here btw
The sites are all very nice, most of them shady; you will see your neighbors but not close enough to have a conversation. There is a fair amount of road noise, more than I anticipated. The sites at the end of the loop probably have more as there is an open field adjacent to the property between the campground and the road. Also up on the road at that end is a construction company and they start up early getting their trucks and guys out. In addition at that end, the sound of the peepers in the field and small pond is positively deafening. I recommend staying below 9/10. Also worth noting if you are tenting 4, 6 & 7 had quite of bit of water in them after a thunderstorm.
There is one main bathroom with three stalls and one shower (bring some quarters). It's clean but because it's not completely screened if you shower at night you will have company...moths, mosquito's etc. Also there is another bathroom at the Ranger station
You can rent canoes on site and also there is a weekend shuttle pick up by North Star Canoe Rentals, during the week you need to go to their site across the river.
A couple of local recommendations;
• Le Moo's Dairy Barn in Claremont,N.H.
• Green Mountain Smoke House,Windsor,VT. (retail store to bring back to grill)
• Harpoon Brewery (great beer & food)
• Mount Ascutney (drive or hike)
• Morningside Flight Park, Charleston,N.H. (zip lining, hang gliding lessons)

My hubby, his BF and his two boys (ages 12 and 10) and my two dogs spent July 5th-July 8th at Wilgus State Park. We loved it! Very nice, flat, clean campsite. We had campsite #4 and it was VERY private on one side and the other wasn't too, too close. The staff at Wilgus are extemely helpful and very nice. If you have a chance drive the 30 minutes to Ludlow and go to Buttermilk Falls at Okemo State Park. Wonderful. Our dogs swam in the pools between the rocks at the lower falls. They LOVED it. It was rocky, so be careful with their paws but my dogs (Black Shepherd and a Pembroke Welsh Corgi) loved the cool water. We loved it too. Nice break from the heat. Stop at the Ludlow farmer's market (after 4pm on Fri) and pick up some wonderful VT homemade items. AWESOME chocolate croissants for the next morning. :) I must say being right on the CT river it gets VERY muggy in the summer at Wilgus but we did have a hot week. Just an FYI..there is a Super Walmart (if you need food or camping stuff) about 15 mins from the Park. Ask the Ranger how to get there. Also, ice is cheaper at the Citgo up the street but not by much. Also, we drove up to Quechee Falls. Only 30 mins north. If you have dogs, stop at the Quechee Gift shop\snack bar right before the gorge. They have covered picnic tables. We tied the dogs leashes up to posts and ordered at the window and brought food back to the picnic tables. I had a cold lobster roll that was delish! Hubby had a HUGE pulled BBQ pork sandwich.

First time to Wilgus State Park over Memorial Day Weekend with two teens 16 and 12 and 1 family dog. There are about 19 sites and some cabins and lean to's as well. We have a pop up camper and fit nicely in site #9, #8,7,6,5,10 are nice sites as well. Your view is the Ct River which was rather high and swift current). The Park Rangers were very friendly and helpful and knowledgable of the area. If you needed campwood, its $4 a bundle and they deliver it to you via golf cart. 5lbs of ice $4. Showers, coin operated, clean and plenty of supplies.
We went 3 1/2 miles up to Cascade Falls Road and parked there and hiked up to the Cascade Falls, round trip 2.2 miles. Didn't go to the top which was another 1.1 miles. We drove the auto toll road to the summit then walked the remaining 7 tenths of a mile to the top where there is an observation tower as well. If you stay in the park you don't have to pay to go to the top of Mt. Ascutney, just show your pass.
Went to Camp Plymouth, beautiful state park, lake, canoes, kayaks, bathhouses, bbqs, picnic tables, everything including wheeled carts to take your stuff from the car to the beach area. Just well maintained and absolutely beautiful. Its about a 35 min ride from Wilgus and you go by Okemo Mt to get there and pass country stores in Ludlow and on Rte 131, great general stores, meats, clothing etc. People fly fishing along the river to and from.
The campground has a pavillion with 3 tables and a fire place next to the check in area, so if it rains all day there is something you still can do outside. They had a volleyball net and horseshoe pit as well and entrance to put your canoes/kayaks in between sights 7/6 I think.
We had our campfire till midnight most nights, but not too many people up, if they were they were quiet. There is a mowed area of lawn next to the restroom and we played whiffle ball with the kids there.
5 mins up the road is Windsor where the Harpoon Brewery is along with Simon Pearce glass, stores etc. Gas stations are nearby as is an icecream stand as well heading towards Windsor.
There are local swimming holes nearby by car, Stoughton Pond and another.
We hiked across the street from the entrance of the park up the Pinnacle trail and stayed on the path but when it turned right we went left, followed it down for a bit to a pond. Bring your rods, big fish and the dog could swim and fetch in the water. When you head back to the normal trail, bear left at the fork (we went right and had to double back), when you get to the trail go left to the 2 tenths up to the summit then follow down again, nice short hike.
Would go there again in a heartbeat, friendly, clean, courteous service etc.

My husband and I recently went to Wilgus State Park for a weekend camping trip. We reserved the Osprey cabin, one of four cabins in the campground. All of the cabins are along a relatively short stretch of the campground along the Connecticut River. While the Mink and Otter cabins seem to have a bit more of a buffer between their sites, the Eagle and Osprey cabins are considerably closer together. The Eagle/Osprey cabins would be ideal for a larger group to reserve together - but in our case, we found our Eagle neighbors a bit too close (and too loud) for comfort.
Regardless of our boisterous neighbors, the cabin site was very nice. On the river-facing side of the cabin is a flat, raked gravel area with a picnic table and fire ring. A covered porch sheltered two plastic Adirondack-style chairs. The entrance to the cabin had both a regular door with electronic keypad lock, as well as a screen door. The cabin is in like-new condition and comfortably furnished with bunk beds, a futon, and a small dining table; and is wired for electricity so it had a ceiling fan with light, as well as a couple of outlets. The cabin stayed remarkably cool throughout the day, which was a welcome relief since temperatures were in the 90's the weekend we were camping.
The campground itself is pretty small, meaning that everything - water, bathrooms, canoe/kayak river access, and the camp office - are all within easy walking distance. The bathrooms are well-stocked and clean, and I'm pretty sure the camp showers had better water pressure than we have at home. The canoe and kayak access to the river is down a dirt path, where my husband and I were easily able to launch our kayak into the river. Kayaking this section of the Connecticut was an easy paddle - there was hardly a current and the river is wide open and easy to navigate. We did hit a shallow area upriver a few miles from the drop site and had to navigate a bit more carefully; but this seems like a result of our lack of rain recently.
All in all, we are definitely planning on going back to Wilgus, but will probably try to reserve the Mink or Otter cabins for a bit more privacy if we're going alone. We'd love to book Osprey and Eagle together for an excursion with friends.

The serene Conn. river is right there for swimming and canoeing. You can enjoy the views and campfire while not being "away" in the woods.
This is not on a mountain and there are other people nearby but you can enjoy camping with clean, well lit accessible facilities on the premises. Ascutney is nearby (10-15) min. drive for hiking and so is the 1950s feel town of Claremont so there is little about Wilgus that is remote. But none the less a cool spot to swim and relax by the fire for a night or two.

Stumbled upon this campground 4 years ago and make sure we visit there at least once a year. We like that it is small and quiet and has clean restroom facilities and showers. The Ranger and the rest of the park staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. We love that you can launch your kayaks from the campground or even take a kayak trip and float down the river to the campground. All the sites are clean and well maintained. They even have 4 comfortable cabins (where we now stay) that have electricity, a ceiling fan, a futon, bunk beds, table/chairs., and a porch. We like that it’s just a few minutes away from Mount Ascutney, Harpoon Brewery and 20 minutes from Quechee Gorge. The campground is pet friendly (but not allowed in cabins) and makes a great destination for families, a group of friends, or couples. Can’t wait to go back in the Fall!

This is a great campground if your interested in canoeing or kayaking on the river. It's a small campground, with only about 15 sites. All sites appeared to be right above the river or very close to it. The Ranger was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area. There are alot of local attractions in the area including The Constitution House, The world's longest covered bridge, Mt. Ascutney State Park, and the Harpoon Brewery (yum!). A great place for a weekend trip. Only down side, the sites are not as big as they appear in pictures, although most seem big enough for at least one large tent.

I guess it depends what you are looking for in a campground. Wilgus is very clean and well kept. However, it provides very little in the way of fishing, hiking or swimming. You can put a canoe or kayak in the river but the boat launch is very small. There are a couple of open lawns where you can throw a frisbe, kick a soccer ball or set up croquet. It is not particularly quiet or secluded as it is right next to route 5, a heavily traveled road in Ascutney. If you are a camper who mostly prefers to stay in camp, it might work out well.

We were welcomed by friendly ranger and staff. Stayed at beautiful leanto site right on the river. Handy launch ramp for canoes and kayaks. Best kayak rental in the area. Great location to stay and visit other attractions. Vt State Park campground tag gets you into any other park during your stay.
