Stay here for a relaxing night when driving I-81. There aren't many mom and pop places like this anymore, so support them! Yes, things are old fashioned, but everything is clean and comfortable. I love parking outside my room door, no steps or elevators. There is a wonderful pool and hot tub with powerful jets that wouldn't be out of place at a hotel costing hundreds of dollars more. There are two great lounge charges outside your room under a covered porch great for relaxing and watching traffic go by with a nice mountain backdrop. It appears there is no more continental breakfast but they offer free coffee at the gas station down the hill. Tip: call to make your reservation and they may give you a cash price at a discount.

We had no problems whatsoever with this hotel. When we first got here, I did have to go searching for the owners but he was found in the back working (it is a family owned business so I'm guessing they have work to do too). I agree that they are very friendly and they do a good job with keeping the place up. I enjoyed the inside looks of the place, it had a unique look to it. My kids enjoyed the big hill and loved rolling down it. I loved the view of the moutains and what better way to swim than to enjoy that view! only thing to make it better would have been a free breakfast but the place next door has an awesome one, make sure you try it! worth the price!!!

We were returning to Maryland from a motorcycle trip to Tennessee and Buchanan was about the half way point. We were tired and it was getting late and the Wattstull Inn was a convienient place to stop. Upon checking in, we were each given a free complimentary towel for our motorcycles. I thought that was a very nice gesture. Bikers are notorious for using motel towels to dry the dew from their bikes. Sometimes they get a little greasy and sometimes ruined in the process. I personally have never ruined a motel towel. As it turned out, it rained that night and those towels really came in handy the next morning. The rooms were very clean and nicely decorated. The only thing lacking was a coffee maker and a microwave. I don't recall if the room had a refrigerator. There is a restaurant convieniently located at the bottom of the hill from the motel. We ate dinner there and enjoyed our meal so much we had breakfast there also. The Wattstull Inn has a nice swimming pool but the 2nd of October isn't exactly swimming weather. If it had been summertime, you can bet I would have taken a dip in the pool. I found their rates to be a little pricey, but not outrageous. If I was in the area, I'd stay there again. I recommend the Wattstull Inn to anyone who wants a clean and comfortable room with a spectacular mountain view. Unlike some of the modern motels where you pak in a central parking lot and enter the motel though a main entrance and walk down a hallway lugging your baggage to get to your room, at Wattstull Inn, you park directly outside your door and can keep an eye on your vehicle at all times. I like that. It was unusually cold for the second of October and the heater in the room worked great! I woke up completely rested and ready to ride another 300 miles. The only reason I rated this motel very good instead of excellent is because of the lack of a coffee maker in the rooms. I don't really care about a microwave or refrigerator, although they are sometimes nice to have. As soon as I wake up and my feet hit the floor, coffee is a must! For the rates they charge, a complimentary cup of coffee isn't too much to ask . Aside from that they were first class and excellent all the way.

On arrival the reception guy didn’t seem quite with it. Basically told us you’re in room 3 and that was it, muttered something about coffee. Room was large but no coffee maker, and the Wi-Fi is locked. Returned to reception to ask for a code and it was deserted other than a dog who kept walking in and out! After waiting a while I walked outside only to find him asleep in a bench, surrounded by empty bottles! I spoke loudly to get his attention and by now he didn’t seem to be in the same planet as me! He was muttering something about booking another night, I said no I want the Wi-Fi code, he took a pen and appeared to want to write the code on my phone. Got it eventually but the whole process was useless as the Wi-Fi didn’t work! The bathroom had fresh towels but a dirty bath and a number of long black hairs in the bath and sink. Fridge was dirty.
The free breakfast does not exist! The views of (aptly named) Purgatory Mountain are viewed over the busy and noisy highways.

Let's just say for the money, stay somewhere else. The good things - location, and friendly cleaning staff. The bad things - the unfriendliness of the lady that runs this place. From the reservation process, to check in, to anything else you may have to ask about. Advertised as to having a pool, well that is correct they do have a pool, but you can't swim in it! Apparently a bridge has been out for 10 months and this was the reason that the pool was not ready. Not sure what that has to do with anything but that is what we were told. Pet friendly - yes, but you can't leave your pet unattended in the room. Cleanliness - upon arrival, hedges being trimmed and laying all over the sidewalks and entry ways, rooms old and outdated, outside garbage can (1) ran over all weekend. Ice machine jammed. As previously mentioned no hairdryer, no coffee maker, no vent in bathroom. Some rooms had refrigerator and microwave, some did not. And yes, there are two steps to get up onto the walkway area. All in all the worst experience we have ever had and we travel a lot. I would not recommend this motel.

The Wattstull Inn was recommended by a friend that stayed there several years ago. I guess things have changed. The owner was very rude to us and our friends and there was no water in the pool because of a crack. If you are looking for comfort this is a place to avoid. There are no coffee pots, in the rooms, no microwave ovens or refrigerators. The towels felt like sand paper and were not much bigger than hand towels, so you couldn’t dry off after a shower. Shampoo nor conditioner were supplied or available and the only soap was the very small hand soaps. The owner will allow dogs in some rooms but has an additional charge (we do not have dogs) Her dogs however are free to run around the property and at least one WILL BITE WITHOUT PROVOCATION. There are no amenities at all at this inn and you have to drive several miles for anything but gas (which they own also). All in all not a good experience for any one in my group and not a place I will stay at again

We were traveling with our dog and chose this dog friendly place. Room 6 was large with 2 beds, 2 comfy chairs and a good size refrigerator. The bathroom had toiletries and fluffy towels. The bed was very comfortable. There was A/ C or heat and a window that opened and allowed the wonderful breeze in. The noise from the road was not a factor for us. What impressed us the most was how clean everything was. We certainly would recommend The Wattstull Inn .

My wife and I were looking to just get away for the weekend and I had seen this property for years but never stayed there. Check in was fast and easy, the owner operator checked us in personally and they were very nice The rooms are not fancy and the property is older but had every thing that we needed, tv,phone, refrigerator, and the outdoor pool was fine. There is a wonderful restaurant litterally down the hill from the property that has great food a great prices. If you are looking for clean simple rooms then this is the place for you.

While the facility was okay, the mattress was hard as a rock. The live-in manager/owner was extremely rude and abrupt. She acted as if renting a room to me was a huge burden on her part. I stayed one night, and happily left early the following morning and took my money a little further north to Lexington to the Wyndham. The Wyndham room was only $10.00 more and alot more modern and comfortable. They seemed to appreciate my money as well.

I have been driving by this motel/Inn for many moons and always thought it looked like a cool place. Never got the chance or excuse to check it out till this past weekend. Wife and I decided to head to the mtns to float a part of the upper James River and we had checked out the town of Buchanan last winter and knew that was going to be our float point. So in planning this trip I figured out the Inns name and dropped them a note about staying and also mentioned that we were planning on floating the James. The owner came back with a great room rate but also the suggestion of a stay and float offerered for just less than $100. I grabbed that deal and we headed up. Great little motel right off I81 with big rooms straight out of the late 50's/early 60's. It had everything that we needed at a great price with a comfy bed and was super clean. Next morning they offered a light breakfast and a van ride to the river and the use of a tandem kayak. We had never used a kayak together before and we did much better than I thought. Wife was comfortable and only a little apprehensive about the small riffles that we went through. Float went great and David picked us up in hardly anytime at the end. Would I stay here again - I'm looking for an open weekend already. Would I tell my friends - I'm trying to figure out who might like this place and might like to go.

I'm pretty sure they did have specific hours but definitely no life guard. It was technically closed when we were there (about 9pm I believe) but the woman at the front desk said she'd leave the lights on for us so our daughter could swim. I think the pool hours are somewhat negotiable...
There are more places to choose from in the Buchanan area.
