Enjoyed the Mount Hood Suite 4 nights. Astounding views all day, sure they're the best in the hotel. Would have preferred a separate bedroom but nice layout otherwise. Expect I could have booked an adjoining room but didn't know wasn't separate at the time of reservation. Good launching point for Columbia River, and decent midpoint between Mount St Helens and Mount Hood. Thought about staying nearer both separately, but if you don't mind the gorgeous drives, it may be the best hotel to see both. Agree with some complaints about restaurant - average food, little above average pricing. Believe they have some new service people they are onboarding post COVID and a bit slow, but hey, we got food. Very good beer!
The room was filthy - there was a mound of tissue paper under the bathroom counter that a previous guest had left, along with leaves, plant debris, and a bobby pin which indicated the room hadn’t been cleaned beyond changing out the sheets and towels. The drawers had loose hairs and other debris in them, the coffee maker was absolutely disgusting, and the mattress hadn’t been replaced since the Reagan era - it was both hard and very saggy. I was exhausted but slept restlessly and woke with back pain. I was determined to make the best of it because I was there for a wedding. Went to the front desk at around 11:30 and the man apologized for the state of the room - explained the mattresses wouldn’t be any better in another because they were all purchased at the same time - but assured me he could have the room fully serviced at 2:30 and offered to leave an extra comforter for the bed. I mentioned all the issues including the coffee maker and tissues in particular. I went on to the start of the wedding. Checked back in around 4:30 and there was no change to the room. Still dirty. Talked to a woman at the front desk who said she would have someone go up to tidy up the room and leave the comforter. Left the wedding at 8:45. My room was still filthy. Mound of tissues untouched. No comforter was left. I went to the desk again - for the third time - and the woman tried to argue with me and said they sent someone. I said the tissues under the bathroom counter were still there and my room hadn’t been serviced because my towels were on the floor. She got snippy and “we sent someone to your room and they wouldn’t have touched your towels because they’re your towels”. I said “the man this morning said the room would be fully serviced and even if it was supposed to be a touch up the tissues were still there”. She was clearly annoyed but said she would have someone go again. When I got to my room I immediately called the desk to say I triple checked nobody had been in there and spoke to someone else who apologized and said someone had been sent to the wrong room (TWO TIMES that day? After they repeated my room number and name both times?) and someone would be up immediately. I reiterated the need for the debris to be cleaned up and a comforter. Housekeeping arrived - polite and picked up the trash and vacuumed but hadn’t brought a comforter. She had to go back to get it. I’m a patient person. I know things don’t go perfectly and mistakes happen. I didn’t become even slightly impatient with anyone until the third time I went down to the counter and the woman argued with me. I’ve stayed in $65/night motels with better mattresses and service. I’ve stayed at plenty of other hotels at the same price point and far higher and had far better service. Skamania Lodge is a joke. They pretend to be polite and helpful but utterly fail. Two stars only because I haven’t gotten bed bugs and a few of the people were genuinely nice and helpful.…
Spent two nights/three days at this wonderful property. Our second floor river view room provided an amazing panorama of the Columbia River and the Columbia River Gorge in Stevenson, WA. Considering all the amenities here I would label this a "resort". We hiked nearby trails, enjoyed the outdoor hot tub and spent a lot of time just relaxing and reading in the amazing lodge lobby. We had several meals at the lodge and the quality was really good and the prices surprisingly reasonable. Overall we give this property a full four star rating.
Our first mini-vacation for a long time and sadly underwhelming. A beautiful location but the quality of the stay was below expectations. This included trash left in the bathroom from the previous occupants in our room and a couple of dining room tables that hadn't been cleaned when we were seated. The fitness center was limited to specific 2 hours blocks through the day. No particular issue there, but when it's scheduled to open at 4pm it's very frustrating for 10 us to have to wait, at the locked door, till 4:15pm. I had to call reception and then someone turned up saying they were "in a meeting". But, even with an understanding of COVID-related challenges, it's very frustrating to find loud construction work scheduled from 9am - 4pm each day, making it difficult to relax for a while in the room. There was no clear mention of this (at least that we saw, before arriving) and we would not have visited if we'd known this, for what was supposed to be a relaxing trip. A loud lawnmower starting at 6:55am didn't help our mood either. The food was OK but overpriced for the quality, though the servers were friendly and attentive. Overall, even allowing for the realities of COVID, it felt like a trip with frustrations that could have been easily avoided (rooms cleaned properly, clean dining tables, opening the fitness centers on time) or fully disclosed (all-day construction work and early morning mowers). Not what we'd hoped and probably not somewhere we will visit again, which is a shame.…
Our experience has not been great during this stay. We’ve been coming to Skamania Lodge for the last 15 years and will likely not return. The service and amenities have steadily declined each year with the prices continuing to rise. The staff at the front desk, bar, and restaurant are curt and unprofessional at times. The food used to be amazing. The food is now basic bar food. Based on amenities provided in our past stays - there used to be a game room for kids, music in the lobby, free wine tastings, bath robes and bottled water (now a $7 charge) in the room, and a real wood crackling fire. The spectacular view provided free by nature is still amazing.
