Located on Blackwater Canyon’s south rim, the lodge at Blackwater Falls State Park offers 54 comfortable rooms with sweeping views of the densely forested gorge below. Built in the 1950s, this lodge predates its sister lodge at Canaan Valley Resort State Park, about 20 minutes away, and has a smaller, quieter atmosphere. All lodge rooms have been extensively renovated, but the mid-century architecture conveys a sense of history and blends in with the natural surroundings. The view of the Blackwater Canyon from the back patio is almost as breathtaking as the park’s famous waterfalls.

So we we in the area and needed a place to stay that was pet friendly and this place was advertised as such. Technically that is true if you consider an almost 40% room rate increase friendly. The pet charge is $42.50. I’ve stayed in Relais & Château that charged less. Let me give you my take on thier guest service philosophy: think about what would be best for the guest or most hospitable and then do the opposite. We were told check in was at four. We drive by it and the parking lot was deserted so we went and hiked down to the Blackwater Falls, an absolutely beautiful spot and then called to see if we could get an early check in I was told that they had three rooms that were dog friendly and all of them were available but they were apparently all still dirty. We asked if they knew when they would be cleaned and they said no that we should call back. I asked if we could get a call when the room was ready and after a lot of sighing and exasperated grunts we were told we would. We walked in at three to see if any of thier cabins were available and we were told the only options held eight. Now we had just driven past all the cabins and it was a ghost town out there. Having said that I now realize that they have a militant check in policy so there’s that. We asked if our room was ready just as one of the housekeeping staff walked up and announced that all the rooms were clean and ready. They also have various rates for different sides of the lodge, parking lot vs. canyon. You apparently don’t get a choice, they just put in in the most expensive side. The room is bigger than a postage stamp but not by much. The view was pretty and I am attaching a photo. One of the added amenities is that you can quite literally hear every word spoken in the hallway or in the room on either side of you. If I’m up this way again I’ll sleep in a leanto before I come back.

Lodge is pretty dated. Rooms are OK, restaurant serves a good breakfast. Plan only to sleep and clean up in the rooms, they're pretty small. Beds are comfortable. There are several well-marked trails that are accessible directly from the lodge.

This lodge is located on the canyon rim for some great views if your room faces that direction. Everything that you would want to do in this park is close to this lodge. I was fortunate to get a pet friendly room for just $40 extra. The room appeared to be clean, but on closer inspection, I found mounds of dust in remote places like under the towel rack and behind the night stand on the outlet. The rooms come with a water heater and hair dryer, but no refrigerator and no microwave. I bring my own food on trips so it was a bit inconvenient keeping the cooler filled with ice. The window curtains did not close fully which brought bright light in the morning. The walls are really thin - easy to hear neighbors. And door slamming can be heard really well, too. And running through the hall - sounded like a stampede! Thankfully, there is an elevator although rather small. The rooms are small, too, and dated, but the entire lodge is getting a make-over in late 2020 - early 2021. I hope that they keep the AC with options for continuous fan and for a wide range of adjustable temperatures. The staff that I spoke with on the phone were really accommodating and helpful. Housekeeping personnel were nice and friendly - they do not clean daily due to covid (seriously?), but they were available to help you exchange your own linens. Overall, a good place to stay, but not outstanding. Hopefully, it will be better after the renovation.

The front desk staff were either apathetic and/or incredibly rude and unprofessional. The rooms are small & outdated, with paper-thin walls. The shower had ancient, cracked pink tiles, complete with mold & mildew (we tried to avoid contact). The pillows were so thin, they were almost useless & the sheets were stained. No cleaning service (allegedly due to the Covid-19 pandemic). We had to ask for fresh towels, soap, toilet paper, etc. & the staff seemed put out by our request. The restaurant is understaffed; the food was overpriced for the quality and portions. There were few alternatives in the area due to the pandemic, so we had to eat there several times. It was difficult to locate any employees; they disappeared into the kitchen area. Good luck getting a drink refill or other assistance! The view of the canyon was nice, but that was the only appealing feature of the lodge. The hiking trails adjacent to the lodge are poorly maintained, often muddy & dangerous due to the many stones & tree roots that could cause a twisted ankle (or worse). Finally, despite signs saying that masks are required (again, due to the Covid-19 pandemic), this was not enforced. When I asked the front desk staff why they did not confront several people in the lobby who were not wearing masks, they said they were not able to force them to do so. However, they did not even ASK them to wear masks. So much for guest safety! In summary, there are many better options for spending your time & money.

Black Water Falls Lodge is perfectly located for a visit to this State Park. Actually, it's pretty much the ONLY location without driving a fair distance on winding country roads for a hotel. TIP: DO NOT DEPEND ON GOOGLE TO GET YOU HERE!! Paper maps do have advantages and by not using one, Google had us drive over 50 miles out of our way on narrow roads to reach this destination. The lodge is a bit dated (old wood doors with old style knobs, locks, and keys, pink tile in one bathroom, aqua in another) but if you're into retro it is 'almost heaven.' It would have been THE place in its prime. Nevertheless, the lodge was very clean, the wifi was good, and the beds were comfy. While making our reservations, the staff bent over backwards to be sure we had two rooms together and they were all quite accommodating in helping us with directions to kayaking and back to civilization on a free PAPER MAP . The restaurant was handy, service was timely, and the food was very good. I was surprised the grandkids ate for a very reasonable $5 each and adult meals were not pricey. The views of the mountains are incredible from the lodge's lookout and it's a good starting place for several short hikes in the park. All in all we had a good stay and we may decide to return someday for white water rafting.
