Candace & Paul are two pros that made us feel very welcome as soon as we got there. It truly is a beautful old building that has been renovated in a wonderful way. We were on the main floor in the Sherwood room which is across the asile from the breakfast room (and close to the coffee). We enjoyed the room, the deck and chairs outside our room and the whole area that was local to the Greenway. My wife and I walked across the street and down the short path to Green Lake. It was our anniversary and we were both so happy to be there for our special day. There was chocolate for each of us on the table in our room. We had access to 24 hour coffee. They also had wine (in the small bottles) that were there for us to drink at our leisure. There was a 4-poster CA king bed with lots of pillows and cozy bedding. The room was beautifully decorated with a hardwood floor, a beautiful rug under the bed, antique furniture and a fire place. It had a large bathroom with all the amenities including robes and thick luscious towels. It would have been nice if the shower had handles for us old people. Our breakfast the next morning started with yogurt mixed with granola and fresh fruit. The main course that day was blueberry pancakes with scrambled eggs and bacon. The coffee was excellent as was the orange juice. We hardly recommend this B & B.

We stayed in the Sherwood room which was large, comfortable, well-appointed and very clean. We enjoyed sitting on the porch outside our room and walking around the area. Paul and Candace were great Inn Keepers, very welcoming and prepared wonderful breakfasts. The house and grounds are excellently maintained and beautifully refurbished. Be sure the read the history books in the parlor. This was a great location for our golf trip to Lawsonia.

Booked this getaway at the B&B Cottage as a splurge near the end of a roadtrip. From the B&B website photos you'll see the cottage has been recently reno'd. So imagine my surprise (even shock) to be met with the distinct smell of mothballs when I first walked into the cottage! When I mentioned it right away to Paul, he didn't seem to notice. The front porch wasn't swept either. I get that this is a cottage, but it's a cottage at an upscale B&B. As well, the glass shower enclosure was streaked, smeared & appeared not to have been cleaned. Very disappointing, to say the least. Note, too, that the cottage is not "on" the lake. It's perched at the back of another private property & has access to the owner's beach by walking their winding driveway & then down the grassy hill between two private homes. So while technically the cottage has "access" to the beach, it wasn't quite as accessible as I imagined. I booked for 3 nights & realized within an hour of arriving that I couldn't stay under these circumstances. I drove back to the main house & spoke w/ Candace to let her know. She denied the mothball smell & attributed it to lavender scented Swiffer pads used to clean the floors. I work as a realtor & certainly recognize mothballs when I encounter them. In any case, I would think scented Swiffer pads aren't really appropriate to use for cleaning public settings when so many people have scent sensitivities. Bottom line, I knew I was on the hook for all 3 nights per terms & conditions, but given the mothballs + dirty shower, feel it would have been gracious of a luxury B&B to give me a break & not charge me for all 3 nights. On a positive note, the master bed was comfortable.

We had a very unusual greeting at the Greenway House that kind of spoiled our stay. The hostess told us with her first breath that she had been so busy the last weeks with full bookings at the house and proceeded to tell us all the annoying things past guests had done, for example drinking too much of the complementary wine, not tipping the housekeeping staff enough, using drains as garbage disposals and calling her at night for non-emergencies (she suggested as revenge to call these guests at 5am the next morning so they would also be woken up from sleep)! I’ve stayed at many Airbnb’s, B&Bs and hotels but was never greeted in such a way in the first 5 minutes, it was highly unusual, I was in shock. I am not sure if we looked a bit untrustworthy? Perhaps Europeans and elders are seen as riffraffs in her opinion that she had to reprimand us before we even were guests? Our whole trip before the Greenway stay was met with super friendly and open Americans from Kentucky to Wisconsin. This aggressive, unprofessional and unfriendly behavior continued the next morning. My 85 year old mom actually slept poorly the first night because she was so worried that she would do something wrong as she didn’t hear the whole list of no-no’s at our “greeting”. Any normal requests made or comments were taken personally and met with a bristly and curt response bordering on attacking the guest for asking for anything. For example, the first breakfast we had was served on plastic plates. I thought this was really not on point considering a room at the B&B is in the luxury price range. For $250-300/ room at quaint B&B I do have an expectation to eat on real plates. Perhaps in these days of fast food and to-go dinners, some people won’t notice or take the time to comment. At a Holiday Inn Express or less classy overnight stay, I would expect throw away plates for breakfast because it’s accompanying a cheap quality breakfast. I questioned the choice of plastic to one of the more approachable staff members and the hostess came out to yell at me and my 80+ year old parents that we hated their B&B and were impossible to satisfy. (My mom had requested a clock in the room, a step stool for the bed and remarked that a Keurig machine wasn’t working properly) We received an explanation from the host, Paul, (who was an extremely accommodating, laidback and friendly host) that when they are at full capacity they cannot spend the time necessary to clean 16 plates because of a residential dishwasher in the kitchen. That seems to be a problem that needs to be addressed, although it sounded a lot like an excuse to cut corners and deliver inferior quality. Food tastes different on plastic than on real plates, so it only takes away from the quality and pride they should have when serving the good breakfast they offer. Actually, as a guest, I am not interested to know how much stress the staff is under, I am paying for a vacation from my own stress, not to have the additional stress from the staff at a B&B! The hostess did apologize to us under duress, but from reading previous reviews it seems to be a pattern. There are plenty of reviews stating the hosts are fabulous, of which 2 are, but if the hostess has aggression dealing with some guests, perhaps it’s best to have no interaction with the guests and leave it to the ones who have a talent communicating with people. I would have given the experience 1-2 stars, but after the yelling incident at breakfast, the hosts addressed many issues that were concerns of ours, Paul and Elaine were both professional and friendly, the breakfast and coffee was top and the house itself is beautiful. I will, however, unfortunately never forget the experience with hostess Candace in a negative way. It tarnished our stay even though Paul did everything to try to make it right.

Our first trip to Green Lake up from Chicago, played golf at Lawsonia and wanted to stay overnight. Candace and Paul were very welcoming, real pros in the business. Our room was clean and extremely comfortable. Breakfast was delicious, plus we met some charming and interesting other couples. We highly recommend Greenway House; we will be back!
