Was looking for a quick trip to Prairie du Chien for Sunday night to Monday, so booking for that night. Figured most of the cheaper motels in town would be booked for the 4th of July long weekend, but it didn't look like it when we got there. Anyway, I looked at a few reviews and decided to try it. Called and asked if they had any vacancy, and yes, they did. Rate: $80/night. Booked it.
Arrived about 4:30 on Sunday afternoon. Owner that checked me in was very nice and friendly. Went to our room. Evaluation:
POSITIVE: Clean (as others have said. Very clean). Nice to have a microwave and fridge. Coffee pot in room. Didn't use coffee pot or microwave. OK TV. 32" mounted on wall across the room from the bed. A couple plastic chairs in the closet if you want to sit outside. Comfortable chair. Desk with desk chair. Queen bed. Two sets of towels in the bath.
NEGATIVE: Thru-the-wall A/C unit (noisy). Glad we didn't stay in cold weather with the looks of the ancient gas heater. Curtains had holes in them, not huge, but holes. Street noise was also evident, though it was a pretty low traffic night that we stayed. Between the A/C and street, my wife didn't hardly sleep. Then the bathroom - Do you like the 1950's? You'll love this bathroom. Sink that hangs on the wall with no vanity. Toilet that's probably a 4 gallon flush and takes a looong time to refill. And a shower that reminded me of some campgrounds I've stayed at. Speaking of the shower, you'd better hope nobody near you flushes a toilet after you get the hot water regulated, cause there will be no cold water until that 4 gallons refills. I was not able to get the temp set comfortable for the entire time I took a shower, which ended up being short because I was either being cooked or frozen by the water coming down. There is no shower vent, and only one outlet (single) on the light fixture above the sink.
They do offer kayak and canoe rentals, and are very close to a couple rivers, so I could see an attraction to stay here if that's your thing. For me, I'll look in town next time.

Very comfortable bed. Very clean. Good shower despite appearances. All good then? No - not really. I'm super sensitive about noise - although no noise from the room (with the fridge off), the rooms are flat on to the road 100 meters away with traffic all night - although sparse from late night until 6 am. The a/c unit vents allow noise in, the door is thin, and the glass in the window inadequately double-glazed. If you're OK with traffic noise, then this is a satisfactory basic overnight stop. Sorry!

Harry and Kit's business card has this phrase, "comfortable and clean". Not only is this an accurate statement to describe their motel, but these two owners are super people. We stayed two separate nights recently (Tuesday and a Thursday). Not only was fine to leave our car parked at their motel on Wednesday night while my wife and I bike toured up the Wisconsin River, Harry let us keep stuff in our room as it was not reserved for Wednesday night. In addition, he offered to come pick us up anywhere along our bike route should we have a major mechanical bicycle breakdown. We had a fun time chatting with Harry and Kit when we finished our ride.

Their motel is a modest, but very nice business within a couple hundred yards of the Wisconsin River. They run a canoe rental from the motel, and judging from our bike tour, this would be a fun activity.

We would stay with Harry and Kit again in an instant.

I checked for a motel on the web, so I could stay in Prairie du Chien overnight. Found this one and loved not only the location, but the room was so cozy. It was exceptionally clean and the bed and pillows were so comfortable. The best sleep I have ever had at a motel! A place I would highly recommend. Nonsmokers only too!

Captains Cove Motel is a throw-back to simpler times. It is a humble, 8 room motel with surprising charm. The tiny room has only a full bed, small desk, little fridge and tiny TV. But the charm is painted on the wall behind the bed. Each room has a hand painted, full wall portrait of an outdoor theme. It is clean and modest but the best surprise comes when the lights go off. On the ceiling, only visible in total darkness, are hundreds of glowing stars that look like an amazing night sky. Just right to pull in after a long drive, get a quick night's rest under the "stars", and onto your destination. Nice and simple at a nice price.
