A very unassuming exterior, cozy retro interior. This could be the most unpretentious place you'll ever eat at. Four of us had lunch there. The server was really friendly and happily answered our millions of questions. She let us know which was the freshest fish...More
This hotel is a slightly ramshackle-looking wooden construction on the side of a hill, which somehow manages to deliver a great experience! It is still family-run after nearly a century and it shows. The staff are all friendly and helpful, especially Dwight Manago the manager...More
If you are looking for a basic, inexpensive ($60-70/night) hotel not far from Kona and close to Kealakekua Bay this is a good stop. It is an old (built in the 1930-40's) building and shows it's age. The hotel and restaurant are family run, and...More

Are the japanese mats more or less comfortable than the mattresses?
Your input is appreciated. I am deciding on a room for one 65 year old female. I would like to save money but is sharing a bathroom worth it?

I can't answer your specific questions but debated the whole shared/not shared bathroom question with myself before booking to stay 2 nights in December last year. Given the prices are so reasonable I decided to go with the private bathroom. Probably if you need to ask then it is worth the extra cost :)
I had a room on the second floor. The bed was comfortable (quite firm). This is a super place to stay, the people were lovely and the breakfasts are delicious.
PS I am 64.
