Don't let the outside of the hotel fool you, the rooms are very comfortable and nice. The Pakalana Inn is centrally located and close to restaurants and Hilo Farmer's Market. Paul's Place downstairs is a cute little (3 table) restaurant, our breakfast there was the best we had on the island.

Please keep checking back as the exterior improvements are time consuming but ongoing. My hope is that we will get as nice reviews of the exterior as our remodeled interior ;-) Neil

As others have said the exterior of the building is plain but the interior is quite nice and the owner was Very helpful I also enjoyed that the doors were electronic and you need to punch in a code to get inside and that I didn't have to carry a key with me downstairs is a restaurant called paul's place...

Just stayed here on our last night in Hawaii before flying out. As others have said, it doesn't look like much from the outside, but is quite lovely inside. I was struck by the smell of fresh flowers every time I walked in the front door. We stayed in room 1 which was very pretty, and included a mini fridge,...

Your review of room one (e'kahi) was excellent and maybe not clear to others is that the new windows are double glazed for sound as much as heat. Closed, with the ac turned on should help with road noise. Downtown is busy and the farmer's market is literally outside the door so some days are more active than others. Please...

Despite the fact that the Pakalana Inn may only be recognisable by a cute little sign over the door this is not to detract from the place; rather it adds to the 'Narnia' qualities of the establishment. The rooms inside are clean, comfy, and well equipped with amenities. Downstairs is "Paul's Place", which also deserves the title of a 'Hidden...

Your review rings all too true as we enjoy our low-key option to the big box hotels. Regular and return guests find we are a home away from home. With multi-night discounts, kam'aina rates, and family & friends discounts we hope to lure you back again and again. Don't hesitate to ask about our specials - Paul's is our model...

We were a little worried pulling up. Outside needs paint. Inside, rooms are updated and very pretty with "oldtimey" feel. This is very much in keeping with nostalgic feel of old town Hilo. Neal, the owner is very personable and recommended places to eat. On that account, we were not disappointed. Didn't have much time to explore Hilo environs, but...

I have spent ~ 3 weeks in Hilo over the last 3 years and have stayed at the Pakalana Inn each time. That alone should be enough of an endorsement. The inn is clean and comfortably appointed and the location ideal within walking distance to all that downtown Hilo has to offer. The owner Neal is very accessible, pleasant, and...

HI all, Others told us not to go to Hilo cause it rains there all the time. We were there 4 days with no rain at all (in February). The Pakalana Inn is perfectly situated right in the heart of shopping, farmer's market, and easy access out of town to Volcano and other sights. Neal is very quick to meet...

Neal is single-handedly the best part about this quaint hotel. He was extremely quick and friendly with booking our room at short notice, explained the property thoroughly, gave great food recommendations, and even brought us a little welcome gift upon our arrival! The rooms feel like small apartments, and the only negative I have is the lack of air conditioning....

The room was beautiful and the communication and booking was very easy and friendly. Thank you! No a/c which was fine because there was a great fan and big windows, but as mentioned in other reviews that meant the street noise was high. We happened to hit a lovely night - warm and still, and there were lots of parties...
