My husband, adult daughter and I spent 2 nights at the Kalaekilohana Inn as part of our week on the Big Island. Our stay exceeded our expectations. The suite was large and well appointed with our own lanai that looked over front the beautiful property. The inn was mostly built by the innkeepers and is impeccably furnished and curated.
Kenny and Kilohanna made us feel welcome and part of their Ohana. Kenny is a great chef, and provided healthy and delicious breakfasts served on the veranda each morning. We also opted to have dinner at the inn for both nights. Food is either grown on the property, with home baked goods, or locally sourced, when possible.
Our main activity while in the South Point area was to hike to Papakolea (Green Sand) Beach. Kilohana gave us great advice on when to set out (early), what trails to use, and to avoid using the rides by the locals to the beach. We are glad we followed his advice because when we got there we were only the 3rd party there. We returned before lunch to refresh ourselves, and Kilohana, again gave us recommendations for a place to have lunch and then suggested we take a looped drive in the area past farms and open lands that displayed the many micro ecosystems of the island.
Our experience at this inn was by far the most pleasant of all our accommodations in Hawaii. We highly recommend Kalaekilohanna to travelers who seek a change from the ordinary, impersonal, hotel stay.

Wanting to see as much of the island on our first trip as possible, we wanted to make sure to include the southern end of the Island. We started with two nights in Hilo, then spent a day at Volcanoes National Park before continuing south to Kalaekilohana Inn & Retreat. What a great place! Such a peaceful and relaxing location for the fabulous "home" they have created for their guests. Kalaekilohana Inn turned out to be the favorite part of our trip. So much of that had to do with our hosts, Kilohana and Kenny, who struck a perfect balance in offering friendly greetings, information, and conversation when desired, while giving us space to kick back and enjoy their amazing B&B. The rooms were spacious, clean, and private and there are wonderful downstairs spaces to relax in. There are only four guest rooms, so it never feels crowded. Both hosts can help you with interesting ideas for day trips, maps for off the beaten path drives, as well as lots of information about the current and historical cultural events that have shaped the islands. Kenny is an accomplished chef, preparing an optional dinner for a fair price. The food was delicious. Breakfast is included, and like dinner was fresh, locally sourced, and beautifully presented. The dining areas both indoors and out are spacious and comfortable. Kalaekilohana Inn & Retreat offers all visitors a great experience. Do NOT hesitate in booking a stay! It'll be one of the highlights of your stay on the Big Island.

We spent two lovely nights at Kalaekilohana, enjoying the great hospitality of hosts Kenny and Kilohana. Our two children were very well looked after and felt very comfortable in this beautiful property. The rooms were spacious and delightfully furnished, with a great breakfast emphasising local produce available each morning, prepared fresh by Kenny. We really appreciated the freely available drinks and snacks, the relaxed atmosphere, the fast wifi in all parts of the property, and the commitment by our hosts to making sure we had as much local knowledge and advice about the south of Big Island as we needed. Highly recommended.

It was great having you here. We are most grateful everyone felt right at home. Since we focus on fresh locally sourced produce, whole grains, and a balanced cuisine, it is always a pleasure to have younger guests with a more developed palate. We are glad to hear that some of our thoughts on what to do worked out well for you. It is one of the things we value when we travel as well. Mahalo

It's rare to find a gem like Kalaekilohana anywhere. Hosts Kenny and Kilohana are warm and welcoming. Every small detail has been attended to, from the spacious and beautifully decorated rooms, to the locally sourced and deliciously prepared breakfasts. We didn't realize dinner was also an option -an unusual amenity that inns don't often offer, but so glad we took advantage of Kenny's excellent culinary talents.

We appreciated learning more about the Native Hawaiian culture and language from Kilohana and Kenny, something you can't really get elsewhere. Both our hosts are a wealth of information and advice; we hiked to Green Sand Beach, and Kilohana gave us particularly useful advice about navigating the sometimes confusing trail.

We have been to the Big Island many times but missed this treasure but it will now be part of our annual visits.

What a lovely place to go and relax, enjoy the quiet, beautiful surroundings. My husband and I both found that the three days spent at Kalaekilohana was the highlight of our weeklong stay on the Big Island. We came from Volcano and ended in Mauna Lani resort. Despite the somewhat remote location we found the hospitality of Kenny and Kilohana made our stay feel like a home away from home. The breakfasts and dinners we partook in were healthy, local and delicious. The complementary beverages in the fridge and snacks made us feel like we were at home just grabbing a drink and snack whenever we needed/wanted. Chatting with fellow guests and with K&K during and after each meal provided a nice sense of community but there was plenty of space for privacy as well. We highly recommend you stay here at least a couple nights on your tour of the island. We certainly look forward to returning with more family.

We spent two nights in the Green Sea Room during our 30th anniversary trip to Hawaii. It was an honor to stay with Kilohana and Kenny. Everything was fabulous, and we hope to return someday if our travels lead us back to Hawaii! We had the most delicious dinner of our trip here. It was prepared by Kenny. Kilohana was so gracious to write down plans for us of things to see, do, eat, and enjoy in the areas we were exploring from there. We were “mid trip”, so we did our laundry there. It was conveniently located right outside our room, and it was complimentary (detergent and supplies included). We learned about pronunciation in the Hawaiian language and the significance of the kahili. We learned about beautiful fresh flowers and birds that we saw on the property. The delicious meals Kenny prepared were all locally sourced and it was fun to hear about the foods, flowers, etc coming from this property and that of neighbors. The bed was so comfortable! I would love to know where to get that mattress! There is a fridge on the porch where guests may help themselves to water and other drinks at any time of day. We borrowed an umbrella one day, and we were offered binoculars and walking sticks, as well. Generosity abounds here! Of note, there is internet, but no tv (which we were happy with). There is no air conditioning, but just opening the windows in our room provided the perfect natural A/C…that is a big deal coming from someone who is hot literally all the time! We cannot recommend Kaleakilohana more highly! Thank you for a wonderful stay, Kenny and Kilohana.

Kenny and Kilohana have created an oasis that is absolutely exceptional- from the minute we drove up and they greeted us from their lanai to the food Kenny made (seared ahi, forbidden rice, fresh salad from their greenhouse, sliced mangoes, etc) to the flowers in each table to the spotlessly clean suite. Did I mention how comfortable the beds are?
I am used to 4 and 5 star hotels, (that's definitely where I splurge in my life) so I hold back my expectations when we visit a more remote place-- but this was truly an exceptional experience and I would never trade a night at their B and B for a night at the Ritz Carlton. I can't wait to go back.

We had an absolutely wonderful experience here. Hospitality was unmatched during our stay. They genuinely cared about our experience both at their inn, and on the big island. After dinner, if you choose to, everyone gathers on the front porch to chat and discuss what their plans for the next day are. They provide a valuable service by telling you exactly what you are going to encounter, and how to navigate your chosen activity. The location lends itself for a trip to Volcano National Park, Green Sand Beach, or to the southernmost point of the US. They even went the extra mile and provided us with coolers and beach chairs to take with us on our stops. Everyone was eager to hear about our trip, proof that they were invested in our vacation.

The food was great. Breakfast and coffee on the front porch is a memory that will stick with me. The room was large, plenty of room to move around, place your things, and never have the feeling of being cramped for space. The bathroom and shower were very nice. Overall, very clean and tidy, A+.

Would recommend to anyone, young or old.

This is one of the best small inns in which I have ever stayed. The inn and room are beautiful and spacious and the breakfasts and dinners are outstanding. But the most memorable aspect of this accomodation is the friendliness and hospitality of the two owners and hosts. Kilohana and Kenny are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable: they set the tone for a convivial experience with the other guests. Every evenings hosts and guests gathered on the lanai to discuss the day's activities, future plans, Hawaiian culture and activities, and any other topic relevant to the group. Kilohana's and Kenny's recommendations made our day trips truly wonderful!

We stayed there four nights. One day was spent at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park's Kilauea site, hiking the Kilauea Iki trail through a rain forest and volcanic crater, taking Chain of Craters road to a rocky beach with a great view of a Sea Arch, and taking the Crater Rim drive to its end and stopping to observe the Kilauea Caldera and steam vents . We spend another day driving to South Point and walking to a Green Sand beach (about 5 miles round trip) and stopping at a food truck in a nearby town for a great Hawaiian lunch. We also drove to the Captain Cook area where we went to a historic park that was both home for Hawaiian royalty and a temple/place of refuge. Attending the talk by a ranger who had native Hawaiian ancestry, grew up in the area, and had ancestors who had been priests at the site was a truly educational cultural experience. We also went to a beautiful untouristed beach park nearby. Finally, we also visited the Kahuku unit of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for a beautiful hike through rolling hill country at the base of Mauna Loa.

Kenny and Kolahana make coolers and beach chairs available to their guests, and even made us a picnic lunch! The breakfasts on the lanais and the dinners inside were truly wonderful. Kenny is an outstanding cook who uses locally grown fruits, vegetables, and eggs as much as possible. Even the meats were locally produced! We truly enjoyed our meals!

But what we most enjoyed is that thanks to our hosts' tips and knowledge, as well as the inn's location, we were able to enjoy a relatively untouristy location (as compared with the Kona and Kohala resort areas) and learn a lot more about Hawaiian culture. We really got to appreciate Hawaii's history, culture, and hospitality on this trip, which was a memorable experience. I recommend this to anyone who wants to experience genuine Hawaiian vacation experience!

Kilohana and Kenny know what travelers need. They are pleasant and caring hosts and they like interacting with the guests. Their home is beautiful. The guests rooms are spacious, thoughtful furnished, feature good beds and you can even do your laundry for free. wonderful breakfast, dinner made of regional products at request, and the delightful company of the 2... what else? A huge terrace and amazing stargazing just steps away from the porch. The amenities are also nice :-)
We can recommend this luxury b&b to anyone who likes nature, good conversation and interesting people.
