My husband and I stayed in the little cottage that sits somewhat behind the big house. It was adorable and very private. Jamie and Doug were excellent hosts and the breakfast was great all three mornings that we were there. There are several good restaurants nearby that we enjoyed for dinner during our stay. Jamie recommended them and we were not disappointed.
We would def. stay there again.

Many thanks to Coconut Cottage for a joyful and wonderful experience. We stayed five nights in the Bali Suite and loved every minute. Clean and spacious and beautifully decorated. Lovely theme and our lanai overlooked their manicured gardens. We enjoyed drinking wine at sunset and listening to the birds on the property. The breakfasts were amazing and never had the same thing twice. Wonderful chefs!! A big mahalo!...and we will be back!!

We spent a quick four days on the Big Island with two nights in Kona and two nights at Coconut Cottage. The B&B is well located for exploring this quiet side of the Island. We arrived late in the afternoon and found it convenient to view the lava flow in the evening and then have dinner in Pahoa. We explored the Puna District coastline the next morning, had lunch in Pahoa, then off to Hilo for the Tsunami museum and up to the astronomy visitor center on Mauna Kea for sunset and some stargazing. The next day we drove around the east side of the Island back to Kona. All of that feeling well rested and well fed by our hosts. Highly recommended.

I thought I was going to heaven but ended up in purgatory...

My wife and I stayed in the Garden Bungalow for 3 nights, starting January 26, 2012. My sister was also traveling with us and stayed in the Hibiscus room of the main house. Check in time is between 3 and 6 PM. During the booking process over the internet, we were asked approximately what time we would be arriving. I replied about 5 PM.
When we arrived at 4:45 PM (which was a pretty close estimate since we landed in Kona and had to drive to the other side of the island) we were not greeted by Todd, nor were we greeted by Jerry, but were greeted by 2 envelopes taped near the front door of the main house.
This was our first experience ever of not being greeted by someone at a B & B. The envelopes contained instructions about our lodging. We felt very uncomfortable going into the empty main house to drop off my sister’s luggage. We then went down to the garden bungalow which was unlocked and found the key inside on the table in the television viewing area.
After unloading our luggage, and about 25 minutes after we arrived, we were greeted by Ginny who was the mother of Todd. She welcomed us and we had a brief pleasant conversation about the area and the nearby attractions.
During our stay, we never did see Todd or Jerry, although Ginny did allude to the fact that Todd was on the computer in the house at times.
I found the breakfasts enjoyable. Breakfasts were advertised to be at 8:30, but we were told that breakfast would be served 8:00. Since the 3 of us are very laid back travelers, we are able to go with the flow and adjust to the change of time. Our first breakfast was fresh coffee, fresh fruit, and pancakes which were very tasty accompanied with Portuguese sausage. I would have liked to have seconds (just an extra pancake or two), but it is incumbent upon the host to ask the guests if anyone wants seconds and that was never asked during our 3 breakfasts. The sweetbread the second day was good and the following day was a quiche, which I wasn’t too fond of, but ate since we had a long drive ahead of us after breakfast.
When we first entered the garden bungalow to drop off our luggage, there was a musty smell. We quickly turned on the ceiling fan to circulate the air and the smell dissipated. Since we are respectful of the environment, whenever we left in the morning we would power down anything run by electricity except the refrigerator. Unfortunately, whenever we returned in the evening the ceiling fan had to be put on to dissipate the musty odor.
The garden bungalow does not meet my definition of a full kitchenette. Although it did have a microwave and refrigerator and coffee pot, it did lack a stove, which would fulfill my definition of a kitchenette. That mistake is on me as when I saw the term “kitchenette” on the website, I just assumed it had a stove, but the website makes no mention of a stove. Water pressure was very low in the kitchenette.

The bed inside the garden bungalow had 4 posts and an umbrella behind the headboard and was very comfortable. There was also a pull out sofa and another seating area. Unfortunately, the lighting in the seating area is insufficient for one to curl up to a book and read without straining their eyes. As stated on the website and seen in person, there is a very large DVD collection, but some people (like us), enjoy reading in the evening before retiring. I do suggest some lighting that is adjustable to make reading easier in the evening and also label the switches near the screen door – we never did figure out the use of one of the switches.
The bathroom was clean, but there was some spotting on the ceiling around the shower. The water pressure was fine in the bathroom. Also note, if you are not entering the bungalow through the sliding door (which only has a lock on the inside) the main entrance is through the bathroom.
However, please be aware that the garden bungalow is an old structure, and although clean, time has taken its toll on this structure, both inside and out.
My computer is a little more than a year old and picks up a signal very easily. In the garden bungalow the most I was able to get was 2 bars and that was the exception, rather than the rule. Most of the time it’s one bar. On one occasion I did bring my computer to the Hibiscus room occupied by my sister and the signal there was a very strong 5 bars. I know I could have taken my computer to the main house, but then what’s the point of renting the garden bungalow? If the property cannot get a stronger signal to the garden bungalow, at least note it on the website so it can be expected.
Though no fault of the owners, cellular service (we have Verizon) is non-existent inside the garden bungalow or house. Ginny even remarked that she has to go to the driveway to get a signal. I tried calling my sister from the garden bungalow to the Hibiscus room one evening right before she retired for the night. She had a case of vertigo earlier in the day and I was concerned about her. The call did not go through. Fortunately right before I left the main house I spoke to Ginny and she said she would look in on my sister if need be. Even though it wasn’t necessary, I do appreciate her concern and willingness to do so.
Outside, the flora was beautiful, but the fauna was annoying. Unless you’re a heavy sleeper, be prepared to be annoyed by the coqui frogs. It’s easier sleeping with the constant drone of locusts or white noise in the background, rather than the sporadic and inconsistent chirping of these amphibians. Also, the owners apparently have 2 dogs somewhere on the property. Not being a dog lover, it didn’t matter whether I saw them or not, however during the wee hours of our second night, there was barking next to the bungalow. It may or may not have been the owner’s dog, but that’s not the issue. The dog left a “present” near the pathway between the bungalow and the entrance to the kitchen. Fortunately my wife saw it and prevented me from stepping in it. This problem has been mentioned in other reviews – perhaps the owner should do a quick check of the property once or twice a day so the guest never come across something like this.
I was very disappointed that the hot tub was out of order (see picture). Based on the barely legible and weathered note indicating that it was out of order, it appears it must have been out of order for more than a few days. I did send the picture to their email thank you that was sent to me and Todd sent back a picture that showed the hot tub in working order and stated that a new gazebo was on order. Unfortunately the fact that it was already working February 4, (according to a posted review) about a week after our visit, didn’t help me out one bit. Other than the weathered note that was on the hot tub indicating it was out of order and the fact the cover was on it, there was no personal explanation, compensation offered or apology for us being unable to use it.
In my opinion, the website is great, but did not deliver. It would have been nice to be greeted upon arrival, offered seconds at breakfast, have sufficient light to be able to comfortably read in the evening (the television did not have a signal for a few hours one evening), have a better internet signal in the garden bungalow, have a hot tub in working order and not have to watch where you step.
Thus instead of getting a rating of average, it has been downgraded to poor because the website did not deliver in several areas as expected.

Response from coconutcottage, Owner at Coconut Cottage Bed & Breakfast
Responded Feb 24, 2012
As owners of Coconut Cottage it is our utmost goal to make sure each guest has an enjoyable stay with us as evident by more than the 200 excellent reviews. However there are times when we can not please everyone for some reason or the other. We are sorry this guest had a less than satisfactory time. However, in defense we were full aware at the time that these guests came to the establishment already having a chip on their shoulders. Not sure if their trip up to that point had been unpleasant but it was evident that they were unhappy. They rented two rooms, the Garden Bungalow and the Royal Hibiscus Room. The sister of the couple stayed in the Hibiscus Room which is located within the main house. During late evenings, the couple would come up to the front door of the main house (instead of using her personal outside entrance) and ring the door bell very late at night. Then proceeded to not take their shoes off (a Hawaiian custom we enhance) and have loud conversations from her room. We even got a complaint from one of the other guests who were in the next room. They had no consideration for the other guests whatsoever. Our goal is to meet and greet each guest and show them to their room. If we are off property for some reason we leave a very pleasant and informative letter about the property and directions to their room, along with restaurant recommendations and even a personal map of the area. The majority of guests are more than thrilled with all this extra information and have no problem with this at all if for some reason we are not there upon check in which is very rare. Our breakfasts are what guests tell us "stands us above most". We serve a sit down table service gourmet breakfast like you would receive in a restaurant, not your average continental "serve yourself style" breakfast. Each morning a different entree is served consisting of either sweet or savory fare. Most times seconds is served depending on the number of guests. The Garden Bungalow as can see is loved by many guests for it's secluded private setting. It is always cleaned thoroughly, decorated tastefully and stocked with all amenities. We are sorry that this guest did not quite understand the difference between a full size kitchen and kitchenette. Many guests find the full size fridge, microwave, toaster, coffee maker and hot plate sufficient for travel use during their stay. Their is no musty smell in the room. Most guests who stay in a jungle setting such as this realize that there are going to be smells that they are not accustomed to. This is Hawaii....and we live in an indoor/outdoor climate. We understand that this guest from New Jersey might not be familiar with much of the Hawaiian climate differences. We are proud to offer wireless internet throughout the property including the bungalow. Most guests have no problem getting a signal on their laptop while staying in the bungalow. We were surprised they did not. Cellular service is sketchy at times depending on your carrier. Our telephone is always provided to guests at any hour of the day for their use if they have trouble with their cell phones. This guest never informed us they were having any problems. The sister of the guest who was staying in the main house was experiencing vertigo after venturing up to the volcano. Ginny (one of the owner's mother) who is a registered nurse went above and beyond to make sure she was comfortable, even offering to check in on her through out the night. Again for a New Jersey resident the sounds of a tropical jungle and rain forest might be surprising or annoying. Most all our guests enjoy the chirping frogs and birds. Some of the guests even ask if we have a recording of the frogs chirping so they can take it home to help them sleep and to remind them of their tropical stay. We do own two dogs but they are never present among the guests and are kept in separate quarters. They do not bark at all and the majority of guests who read that we have dogs are so surprised by how quiet they are. Many guests who miss their family pet on the mainland ask us if they can meet the dogs. We are always happy to bring them out, but only at the guest's request. The barking the guest heard close to the bungalow must have been neighbor dogs in the distance. Prior the arrival of this guest, the island was besieged by strong winds. These winds were so strong it knocked down part of our grass roof gazebo housing our hot tub. We had to temporarily close the hot tub during this time. The hot tub was out of order for only about four days while the structure had to be taken down and a new one put up. This was explained personally to the guest while talking with him right in front of the hot tub. It was unfortunate that it was during the time this guest was here and though unfortunate, we can not "compensate" for the acts of mother nature. Again we are sorry this guest came away with an unpleasant feel. As you can see this is definitely not the norm. The majority of our guests leave with a happy and rewarding experience longing to the chance to return one day.

This is the first timethat I have ever given a B&B zero stars. Our experience was absolutely awful and we would not recommend this B&B under any circumstances. Issues included: (i) run down house; extremely old and uncomfortable mattress; (ii) very noisy – we could hear the TV of another guest. We asked one of the hosts to ask the guest to turn down the TV and we were outright ignored; (iii) cleanliness –for a house where the Hawaiian tradition of removing your shoes is observed (and one which we totally understand and live by at home), it struck us as an odd rule with at least one dog running around the house; (iv) inflexible hosts –for work reasons, we were compelled to cut our stay short by one night and werenevertheless charged for that night. The host responded that any private business or even the Hilton would do the same. We beg to differ. While the owner was no doubt in his legalright to charge us that last night (as per the terms of their policy), it struck us a draconian decision that was not very well thought out from a commercial perspective. As for market practice,we have, over the years, when emergencies have arisen, received far more flexible treatment from other establishments (large chains like the Hilton and,on one occasion, a B&B as well); (v) average breakfast, which is served late by Hawaiian standards as well – starts at 8:30 a.m., a time by which we usually like to be out and about when in Hawai’i given the early sunrise and sunset. In conclusion, there are some amazing B&B’s on the island – this is not one by any stretch.

Response from coconutcottage, Owner at Coconut Cottage Bed & Breakfast
Responded Sep 3, 2011
We feel badly this guest was unhappy with their visit and as can be attested by the literally hundreds of other reviews, not the normal experience at Coconut Cottage. We take all guest requests seriously and when this guest went walking around the B&B at 6:30 PM knocking on other guest doors and asking them to turn their TVs down, we were shocked. We determined one couple was watching a movie quietly in their room and we did ask if they would mind turning the volume down a bit, even though it was not excessive by any means. The mattress in their room is two years old and we always have guests ask the brand because it is so comfortable. We do have two dogs that are kept in their own quarters whenever quests are present, unless they ask to see the dogs, which happens a lot on vacation because people miss their furry friends :-) All we can determine is that this guest was looking for something to be unhappy about. They couldn’t figure out how to use their cell phone to make business calls to Spain and Germany and this seemed to frustrate them.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights in February. We decided to stay here in part, based on the reviews that I read in Trip Advisor. I was very disappointed in the cleanliness of the detached cottage that we stayed in. The picture on the web site of the cottage was a lot different from all the mold and other growths in the porch area that we observed. The owners claim that there is no detail too small was not confirmed by our visit. The venetian blinds were very dirty, there was mold/mildew all over the bathroom, the ceiling fan blades bumped up against the bedframe, one of the dining chairs was broken, the kitchen cabinets were dirty, the refrigerator made a lot of clunking sounds when it cycled on, the entire level of cleanliness in the cottage was just not acceptable. The owners were not there to great us, and we never saw them. The only amenity in the cottage was a little basket of vending machine junk food. Also, much to my surprise, the owners accessed my credit card almost two weeks before I arrived to pay the balance of my bill, after the deposit was paid several months in advance.

I have no idea what it is like to stay out in the back cottage, but staying in the Pineapple Suite was a huge disappointment after reading all these positive reviews and visiting the Coconut Cottage website. In reality, the carpet was old and smelled bad, and there was a scratchy woven mat covering it that did not cover the smell. The bathroom cabinets were also old and ugly. The worst thing though was that to get to this room, you had to go through the "Lava Lounge" which is basically a room full of DVDs that any guest could enter at any time. The Lava Lounge also is where the bathroom for the Hibiscus Room is located. So what separates you from people (and children!) going in and out of that room all night to use the bathroom and choose movies? A sliding glass door and a sheer curtain!!! Yes, the bed is slightly raised, but you can still hear and see quite a bit into the Pineapple Suite from that lounge area. Also, two of the windows that face the garden have no curtains or blinds at all. At night with the lights on everything in the room is visible to anyone walking through the garden. Kind of hard to feel romantic in this room! I was upset that when I booked this room and told the owners we were going for our honeymoon they didn't mention anything about the lack of privacy in this room. And yes, the cars on the street are loud in the morning and the frogs are cute but deafening at night.
Breakfast was also disappointing. The pancakes were tasty, but the other breakfasts were only okay. And the portions are not generous-- four small slices of Portuguese sausage and three tiny pancakes with some fruit (one morning there was CANNED pineapple on the fruit plate)? I'm a petite person and was hungry an hour later. There was never any bread, even with eggs, and no offers of seconds.
I didn't enjoy my experience at this B&B and would not return or recommend it to a friend. Maybe this is great for Pahoa and the Hilo area, which doesn't have a lot to choose from, but compared to the B&Bs I've been to in the past, this one falls way short. The only benefit to staying here is the proximity to the Kapoho and Kalapana areas for snorkeling and lava viewing.

Response from coconutcottage, Owner/Innkeeper at Coconut Cottage Bed & Breakfast
Responded Sep 6, 2008
As innkeepers, we do not discriminate against any type of guest. In fact, we welcome diversity – which makes our guests so interesting and a pleasure to have. We do not get an overwhelming amount of families, but we get our share and welcome them all. This woman turned out to be extremely prejudiced toward children, which was most apparent at breakfast time. This couple booked the Grand Pineapple Suite, a spacious room with a king size bed, his and her sinks, walk-in closets and views of our gardens. This room is extremely private and the only room on the third floor. Yes, to get to the room, you pass through our library on the lower floor which is open to all guests. You then proceed through a door and up the flight of stairs where the suite is located. The family, who had older teenagers, visited the library in the early evening and not within hearing distance of the Pineapple Suite. This woman felt is was too much and asked to be moved to another room. Unfortunately, we were completely booked at the time. This was the whole reason she got upset! From then on, nothing could be right in her mind. Although, we later found it extremely odd that she never expressed any dismay to us during her stay. Of course, no one made mention of the time she came home very late at night running down the main hallway yelling, “I hope I make it to the bathroom!” Her room is one of our most popular among guests, as you can see by many of the reviews. If she thought she smelled anything in the room, one would have to blame it on the fresh orchids and plumerias. We also found it very disheartening that she was not pleased with our breakfasts. This was very surprising as guests tell us we are known for our phenomenal breakfasts and especially for the large quantities, variety and full waiter service. As for the supposed “canned” pineapple, we on special occasions serve white pineapple, which is considered a delicacy among islanders. It is sweeter than yellow pineapple and only available a couple months a year. We were truly disappointed that she was not pleased, as our main goal is to satisfy every guest and provide the best possible service, which nearly all guests agree we deliver.

My wife and I were definitely not impressed with this B&B. To be fair, it could be that we simply had a bad experience given the situation of hosts. The owners, Todd and Jerry, were not around and the B&B was being handled by one of their mothers, a very nice lady.

Main downfalls were breakfast and room servicing. We do not eat pork, and we mentioned this during reservation. Both days the breakfast was designed around pork. So what we got was limited. Day 1 was a plain fried egg plus fruit. Day 2 was just a sticky bun plus fruit. We were expecting a great gourmet breakfast as advertised, and it just fell short.

Our room was also not serviced well. After the first night we ran out of tissues and had two towels that needed changing. When the room was being serviced while we were gone, neither was addressed.

We also weren't sure if we were allowed to enter the main house where the DVD library and seating room was. We were never told how to enter on our own, we were staying in a suite that had a separate entrance. So that was confusing, we had to knock on the door to be let in.

We probably wont return to this B&B.

The location of the B & B is convenient to the many enjoyable sites. The nearby highway 137 lives up to its reputation. Also, there are many conveniences nearby. That said, we might as well be frank. Staying at the cottage wasn't all that great. Our unit, the Bali room, was overcrowded, with bulky furniture and ersatz Indian and pseudo Polynesian knick- knacks and objet d' art. The step-up to the toilet and shower, though probably necessary for plumbing was very inconvenient and a little dangerous if you had to use the "john" at night. Mildew odor constantly permeated the bedroom--given the size of the furniture, cleaning would be a challenge for anyone. But a little Lysol would have gone a long way to remedy this problem. We resorted to incense. The lanai was nothing more than a storage area, but the beautiful foliage on the grounds made it bearable. Access to our room was indeed clumsy. Moving luggage over wet grass is no fun! A simple pathway could have remedied that problem. Finally, the breakfasts were ok...but Denny's ( and I'm no fan of Denny's) does it better. We felt uncomfortable with the proprietors serving us like waiters. This was doubly accentuated by their unwillingness to engage in any personal conversation other than being formally polite. We think B & B's must provide more than just a perfunctory service.Good B&B's have a justifiable reputation for being more than just a motel.

We stayed in the Garden Bungalow for a week and there are some things that we would like fellow travelers to know.
During our 7 nights stay we only had the bed sheets changed once (on night 6) even though there is a card on the bed that states they will be changed every 3 days and if you want them changed more often to leave the card on the bed. When we placed the card on the bed and it was just put aside without changed sheets. The owners have dogs and don't clean up the dog poo very often, this is in the backyard which you have to walk through to get to the bungalow so you better watch were you step if you get home at night or are attentive in the morning! There is a pump for the hot tub or something just outside the bedroom window that goes off randomly throughout the night and if the frogs don't wake you up, this probably will. Though the breakfasts are great, the portions are small and there usually aren't seconds so you may be hungry a few hours after breakfast. They offer WiFi but the signal is too weak in the bungalow to hold a decent connection. The location of the cottage is great and they provided a basic map for surrounding attractions. We've stayed at better B&B's on the main island and although most of our grips are little things they add up. We would not recommend this B&B to our friends.

We feel we need to respond to this guest as many of her issues she addressed are absolute false statements. This was a couple who was here on their honeymoon and we went BEYOND our way to make sure they were having a completely wonderful time. Judging from the comments by them during the stay we thought they were. No sign of unhappiness at all during the week they were here. We were completely surprised to read this review after they left. Judging from the overwhelming amount of positive reviews from past honeymooners who have stayed with us, we can only conclude that there were more personal issues on her end which entered in to this. If a guest is here longer than 3 days we ALWAYS change the sheets and give fresh towels. Their sheets were changed on the 3rd day. We even supplied fresh towels for them EVERY day. This is a strict policy that we always abide by. They never had placed the card on their bed the whole time they were here. We have dogs that are never visible to the guests unless the guests request to see them, which is the case most of the time. Most guests are even surprised we even have dogs as they never see or hear them. Many of our guests miss their pets from the mainland and a lot of the time ask for us to bring them out to greet them. The dogs have a separate section of our acre property in which they perform their duties and which is cleaned up immediately. This is no where near the guests quarters. This guest must have either hiked into the jungle in the back of our property or mistaken mud for dog poop! There is no "pump" for the hot tub which can be heard. We have no idea what she was talking about with this issue. Lastly, this brings us to the "small breakfast' servings. This really hurt as you can see by most of the reviews this is one of our best features. We are known for huge portions and not your average "continental breakfast" serving. In fact, the husband even commented each morning how wonderful the breakfast was and even wanted the recipes. Go figure! We have actual waiter service breakfasts and seconds are using accommodated depending on the number of guests. Our guests rarely if ever go away hungry. Also, we want to point out that we have a set time for breakfast to ensure that the food is always hot and these guests were a half hour to 45 minutes late EVERY morning. But, we still accommodated them every time they were late, even after most of the guests were already finished. Our WiFi signal is strong enough for most of the whole property. We can only think they did not have an efficient PC to pick up the signal. Nonetheless, we had no problem with them coming into the lanai every night spending very late hours playing on their PC and conversing after others have gone to sleep. Our main goal is to make sure guests have the best time when they stay with us and as you can see by the majority of the reviews this is the case. Every once in a while we encounter an unhappy guest. We are sorry we did not live up to their expectations and that they feel we are "overrated". Hundreds of other guests feel quite differently. We will continue to strive to make sure guests come away with a pleasurable stay that they will remember for years to come.

"We recommend staying in the separate cottage - it worked perfectly for the 3 of us (my husband, daughter & me) and is definitely more private."

"Staying in the backyard cottage is a great experience (quaint and private) but it may get damp and musty during rainy season."
