The Hale Pau Hana was simply amazing. We had beautiful sunsets& sunrises everyday right out our lanai (balcony). We stayed in unit 20, newly updated, well designed and air conditioned. Our unit was just steps from an amazing beach, that was never crowded. We also had BBQ grills & the pool very close by. This resort is very well maintained and clean. Every morning all chairs, tables & loungers are disinfected wiped down. Very friendly staff. Kihei's central location gave us easy driving access to many parts of the island. I did not leave!!! We will most definitely be back. Until we meet again, Aloha!!!! Mahalo to The Hale Pau Hana and staff.

Oceanfront in south Kihei. It doesn't get any better. Friendly staff, excellent property upkeep, new AC splits added to front rooms. After many visits all we do on this island is swim, snorkel, read and soak up the sun from Makena to the smaller bays 10-15 mins away. That is if you don't want to just hang out at the beach in front of the condo!

Beautiful oceanfront location in a well maintained gem of a condo resort. Management strives for best practices in the areas of cleanliness, security, communication, housekeeping, and landscaping, The front staff are genuinely eager to fulfill requests always with a smile. Although our unit #104, was recently tastefully updated ( love the wood floors as opposed to tile), here are a few suggestions. Supersoft King mattress needs replacing, as well as the flat pillows. Replace the ultra heavy dinnerware with lighter, easy to carry outside Corelle, or similar. A blue plastic Recycle bin in each unit would help immensely. Sofa is dated and uncomfortable. Replace the two tiny square, always sliding, accent tables with a real coffee table.

Hana Pau Hana was disappointing. For the cost, we expected something a little more upscale and found it rather mediocre. The property itself is nice, on a great beach and the views are spectacular – that is what you are paying for.

Each unit is privately owned. We stayed in Unit #28, which as an end unit had a extra window, which was nice. However, over the unit seems dated and could use some upgrades to warrant the fees being charged. The kitchen was furnished with what seemed like leftovers or incomplete sets. The wrought iron furniture on the lanai with skimpy cushions could be replaced with something more comfortable and impervious to the salt air. The A/C unit is only in the master bedroom (on the street side) which cooled the room, but was extremely noisy. On the plus side it did mask the noise outside. Finally, as 2 guests we were provided 2 beach towels, 2 sets of bath/hand towels and wash clothes that are replaced every Mon/Weds/Friday (great when things don’t dry). However, when we requested additional beach towels for the beach and to keep the car seats dry, at first we were told there was a “linen shortage.” When we said that only two was impractical, we were given the extra towels grudgingly.

The service and staff are exemplary!! They all make you feel so very welcome and bend over backwards to make sure everything is to your liking!!

The grounds are always well attended and the pool is clean and warm. Makes one feel like they're stepping into a big bath tub!

The guests, who are often regulars, are also very friendly so it's like going to a big family gathering each visit!

Hale Pau Hana is so perfectly situated as one can go snorkelling at the reef between Kamaole 1 and 2 or the reef between Kamaole 2 and 3, both of which always have a good display of numerous coloured and sized fish and one usually sees at least one turtle. If you don't see any turtles while snorkelling keep your eyes open for them as they swim past from Kamaole 2 to Kamaole 1 or vice versa. There are stores across the street that rent snorkel gear as well as paddle boards.

Other shops literally across the street from Hale Pau Hana include Cafe O'Lei and Fred's Mexican restaurant among other restaurants. There are clothing and gift stores as well. The Whalers General Store has a supply of some food items but mainly canned or boxed goods along with wine. If you don't find what you need their Hawaiian Moons is just a short block north that is a full on grocery store along with herbal supplements. A liquor store is less than a block away as well. And last, but not least, one must try the cinnamon buns at the Cinnamon Roll Place across the street!! Yummy!!!

Check in was a very simple process and you even get a card that gives you a discount at a local grocery store. The parking lot was gated and since every unit gets a spot, we never had a problem finding a spot.

We stayed in unit 406 which had been remodeled and was absolutely gorgeous! The open concept living area opens to a balcony & overlooks the ocean. I was initially concerned we'd be too hot since there's only an AC unit in the bedroom and we're from Texas where you have AC everywhere you go and one of us runs very hot. But we didn't even end up using the AC unit at all. Whenever we were there, we kept the large slider doors facing the ocean open so we got an excellence breeze (there's also a transom window over the front door that allows a cross breeze) in addition to the fans in both rooms. The bathroom was my favorite part because it was the best ever set up for a germaphobe because the shower was spacious, clean and you didn't have to step out of your clean shower to the toilet.

The kitchen was incredibly well equipped with utensils, cups, coffeemakers, pots and pans, and plenty of standard spices and items you need while cooking. I normally rent through something like Airbnb and wasn't sure what to expect from this condo, but it was actually even better because they have housekeeping that takes trash & dirty towels and you can get clean towels any time which is very handy at the beach. We had some issues getting the Roku tv set up as I think it wasn't set up with the right profile for guests. I had to factory reset the entire thing to remove my own personal streaming accounts.

The grounds have a pool and there's an area on the property set above the beach with tables & beach lounge chairs on turf and it's such a nice place to lounge and watch the ocean without having to get into the sand. The water on this side of the island wasn't clear, at least while we were there. It's more of the dark blue kind of sea. There are some gorgeous rock formations on the beach near the hotel.

The location was nice as well; I felt very safe the entire time and it's a popular tourist area, so there are always people walking around. You can easily walk across the street to several restaurants, ice cream shops, and various other stores. A little further down (still in walking distance or you can hop in the car) are more restaurants (highly recommend Three's Bar & Grill), shopping and grocery stores. It's a really good driving distance from many things on the island, only 30 minutes to the airport and about the same to go to northeast Maui beaches which are gorgeous and great for sea turtle spotting; or up into the mountains for hiking.

I had an incredible stay at the Hale Pau Hana in May 2023 for my honeymoon and was by far the favorite place we stayed at. As the place claims, it truly is right on the water and was the closest to the beach place I saw while on the island. Kamaole Beach Park II was amazing with very soft sand and never got crowded on the right side near HPH. The lawn and beach chairs were great & a little pool which was never crowded. Coffee served 9-11am on the lawn in the mornings which we had most mornings and enjoyed. It’s not the best coffee but we still liked it. It would be nice if they started it earlier like 8am though. Laundry is on the ground floor near the office and was ~3$ each for the washer & dryer. Cleaning staff came M,W,F to replace all the towels.

We stayed in Unit 401 and were very happy with the amenities and it probably was one that has gone through more recent updates. For those wanting more privacy, highly recommend floors 3 & up because it separates you from the lawn below and allows you to sit on your lanai without people seeing you. This also does NOT make you any further away from the ocean (as I wasn’t sure about when booking), because we could easily hear the waves at night inside the apartment. There was 1 bedroom and the A/C got cold at night. There was another A/C in the living room which we did not use/need. There was a Murphy wall bed in the living room which we slept on several nights since it was cool and you could hear the ocean. There was most cooking equipment that you would need such as (dishes, silverware, knives, blender, electric griddle, storage containers, coffee pot, etc.)

Highly recommend staying here if it’s in your budget!

Great location right on the beach which was very quiet but close or central to all the good food and activities we participated in

Highly recommended for families or couples wanting to stay somewhere quiet

Pool was always clean and never too busy

Beach was easily accessible and the shower near the pool was great to use before you used the pool or went back to your room

Plenty of free parking and food and clothing stores right across the road

We got a massage at 808 which was also at the shopping complex across the road

So happy with our stay we would go back

This trip marked the 15th time that my wife and I have thoroughly enjoyed Hale Pau Hana, dating back to our honeymoon in 1974. This year we rented 3 units and our two daughters and their families joined us for what was a fabulous 10 day, 50th wedding anniversary vacation. All 3 units were clean, comfortable and well equipped as usual. Everyone enjoyed the beach, snorkeling with fish and turtles, swimming in the pool, relaxing on the chaise lounges on the lawn and watching the beautiful sunsets. The barbecues provided for great family dinners for 10 people, pulling together tables on the well manicured lawn. We all enjoyed dinners at Cafe O’Lei (across the street), Leilani’s On The Beach (Kaanapali) and Monkeypod Kitchen (Wailea). Ziplining at NorthShore Zipline Co. (Haiku) was one of the many Maui attractions we all enjoyed.

Hale Pau Hana does not disappoint in any way. This small hotel in South Maui in Kihei is a perfect location for a couples vacation. The staff is wonderful and very accommodating. The units are beautifully appointed and the most amazing direct view of the Ocean. There is a wonderful oceanside pool that is heated as well. The property is extremely well maintained and is located centrally making it easy to access adventures all over the island. There are multiple bars, shops, and restaurants within walking distance. I cannot say enough about what a wonderful experience it was stay at the Hale Pau Hana. We will definitely be back next time we are in Maui!

Aloha! Although virtually everything you need is within walking distance (groceries, shopping, restaurants, etc.), we agree that if you want to take day trips a car is best. In the high rise condos or on the beach is there any problem with noise from the street?
Answer from The Hale Pau Hana
Kihei, Hawaii91 contributions
On the beach side, you won't hear anything but the ocean. You may hear street noise on the other side, but closing the east window usually does the trick. And at night with the bedroom door open, you can still listen to the surf. Our very-lightest-sleeping guests report that bringing a "noise machine" ensures a blissful sleep.

Sorry for the delayed response! But if you're still planning your trip, or for anyone else... #602 is one of our upper-floor high rise units, with expansive ocean views.
