I stayed at Aloha Surf in July 2022 and loved it. I stayed in a private room that was conveniently located next to two of the bathrooms. My room did not have A/C which I was not happy about at first. But, there was a ceiling fan as well as a box fan at my disposal and I really was perfectly fine. There is a nice grocery store called Mana Foods in easy walking distance, as well as some ice cream shops and restaurants. Overall, I thought the hostel was pretty clean and updated. Like other reviews I have seen, I would agree that the staff is cliquey, but they were never rude and were always helpful if you ever needed anything. The tours are fabulous. Some of them are longer than others but are all totally worth it. They make a grocery store stop at the beginning of every trip (and sometimes more throughout the day) so you can load up on whatever you want. It was such a fun way to meet fellow travellers. I met people from all over the world. The majority of us were solo travellers (as was I) and we all got along so well instantly because we were such similarly minded people. The hostel is also comfortable walking distance to some good beaches (I recommend Baldwin Beach which a tad further away but it's better than the beach opposite the main road). The kitchen situation was good, they have a system in place to label everything and keep people's things separate. Overall I would highly recommend.

My room was cleaned every day in a six bedroom dorm. The bathroom needed some help as the floor was very wet due to some type of a leak for several days. No place to hang clothes but still lockers for valuables if needed.
Loved coming out of the hostel and seeing the mountains and then down to the ocean. The downside is it's downhill to beautiful beach areas however coming back is uphill and became a struggle for me in the second week. By the end of my stay my hip hurts so bad from that uphill I could hardly walk. But then again that was my problem not a problem for the younger set. There is a bus that runs once an hour in local area . I took the bus from the airport which was easy and great it happened to be free during the time I was there drop me off on the main Street of Paia and Baldwin. It was dark and that first night of the uphill climb was a surprise but again people I am much older hostile user. A large group of young people run the place it is obvious they love their job and love being there. One night they even made Margaritas for everybody and they were good. A tree in the back has star fruit that you can pick and have with your meal yummy. If I stay again I would definitely have a car.

One of the best hostels I've ever stayed at anywhere!
Very clean and modern, with floors and no carpets, the hostel is well laid out with lots of common areas and segmented bathrooms with shower, sink and toilet so you don't feel like 1 person is taking too long in the bathroom or use the private one if you need it.
Friendly staff, especially Tyson who helped us during our stay, we cleaned our muddy hiking boots off from the road to Hana and washed our dirty and wet clothes in the laundry. The main door is open during core hours, but someone is usually at reception.
We had room 2 and 6, and both were really good 4 bed dorms, with fan and shelves to keep your belongings off the floor. They give you sheets and pillowcase, I hear beach towels are available.
The kitchen is big and well organized with food storage bins and a donation bin for leftovers.
There's a daily free tour board with sign ups, led by volunteers.
Centrally located in Paia, it's close to surfing beaches and at the beginning of the Road to Hana. There's a few parking stalls in the back or park on the street.
I would totally recommend this hostel! It's family run, so support local!

This hostel is with walking distance of numerous restaurants, convenience stores, bars and Baldwin Beach. Overall, it's a reasonably priced and clean hostel. The front desk staff was nice overall. The other guests were guarded but friendly. The hostel offers free tours most days of the week, which is generous given the high rates for guided tours.

If you select this hostel, I do not recommend staying downstairs. The floors are really thin. In spite of quiet hours at night, some guests were doing laundry until midnight (machines near lower level entrance). There were occasionally loud noises, thumps (furniture moving?) and action in the upstairs kitchen. I was awakened often at night during my multi-night stay.

When you check-in, ask to see your room before paying. Once you pay, they do not refund for early checkouts, even if requested 3 days in advance.

This hostel is sooo good! The staff is awesome and extremely friendly! They got free tours and even if you stay in the hostel, you got a hot tub, pool table, guitar, etc. It was all in all, one of our best vacations ever!!
We'll come back!!

A nice and super clean hostel, quiet after 10pm (perfect to be up early for the sunrise) , the dorms are comfortable. There’s coffee and pancakes from 8am to 11am, near Paia town and 10 minutes walking from the beach. The free tours are cool! We had so much fun, the staff are friendly. Recommend a lot!

Super friendly nice staff. Big shot out to Katie for giving me a ride from the airport!!!
I got to do the Saturday day trip, a hike, which I love that the hostel includes, because it can be really difficult to get to trail heads by yourself.
Place was really clean, the town is sweet with good places to eat but loads of people use the kitchen at the hostel and it feels like there is always someone cooking.
My room was quiet with only 4 of us, but I heard that the front room can be noisy.
The bathrooms were really nice and So was the outdoor hot tub.
After speaking to travelers who stayed at other hostels in Maui, Aloha Surf definitely sounded like the nicest!!

Would’ve been a great spot, but there are several cats and I have a severe allergy. There’s was also what appeared to be a blood stain on the sheets. When we tried to check out due to the cats they refused to refund even though they admitted that there was no information on the site about the cats. They are very friendly cats and came into the room and were all over the bathroom so there was no avoiding them. Had we known about the cats we never would have booked in the first place.

We needed a place to stay for our last night in Maui and we were so happy we found the Aloha Surf Hostel! Not having stayed in a hostel before we weren’t sure what to expect, especially as we are a couple in our 50’s (we definitely raised the average age of the group!) Katie checked us in early, let us lock up our luggage, we rented beach towels and borrowed snorkel gear for the day. When we got our room later that evening, we were pleasantly surprised as they set us up in their Ohana room, which has its own bathroom, 2 single beds and a queen. We signed up for the hiking tour the next day with April as the tour guide, she was excellent and made a point to talk with everyone in the group throughout the hike. We were able to leave our luggage locked up again and use the facilities until we left for our flight at 7PM.

Was a bit anxious going to another hostel after an experience in Bali but from the moment I arrived it was really welcoming. I was shown around the hostel and to my bunk. It was 10pm but there was a nice vibe. I was aware that the area was residential so it shut down after 10pm. This was ok as having been to Honolulu I realised I would be exhausted from exploring. This hostel offers free tours with limited space so I was happy to find I could tour the next morning. I got to partake in four tours and each one was really good. It helped people to mix and the staff were very friendly. Especially Jax who was my favourite! The hostel itself is really clean and the showers were recently renovated. I never had an issue with using one. The kitchen is used well and the wifi was good too. I would recommend this hostel to anyone looking to explore Maui.

The Hostel offers free tours for the price of tipping the driver. Pack your own lunch and spend it in the comfortable air conditioned van with a professional driver. I have also rented a car but preferred relaxing and letting somebody else drive.

Aloha, nice to hear you are thinking of visiting us! To answer your questions, 1. I'm not sure you are looking at reviews for this hostel. Paia is a very safe town known for yoga and hippies, not thiefs or drugs. Our bathrooms are clean and offered to all guests. Private rooms share private and communal bathrooms. We have a very social and family feeling vibe happening at the hostel. We often have solo female guests and I do believe most of them have an amazing experience with us. We do not have problems with bugs either. Like all tropical islands we do have mosquitos but they are not bad in the area we live in. I hope this is enough to persuade you to stay with us. We look forward to hosting you soon! Safe travels and Aloha!

There is ac in some private rooms but not all. It is warm during the day but stays cool at night. If you would like a room with a/c you may make the request when making your reservation request! Hope to host you soon! Aloha!

Says airport shuttle but I've just had an email saying you don't have one?
Answer from sfbeatnik23

Aloha, sorry we have tried time and again to ask Tripadvisor to take down the sign that says we have airport shuttles but have not received a response back. We do not offer airport shuttles. You can take a bus if you have a small bag or you can take a taxi just outside of arrivals. A taxi will cost you $20-25 and will take about ten minutes to arrive. Hope to host you soon! Safe travels and Aloha!
