We spent a wonderful, relaxing, quiet week here away from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu and Waikiki. It never ceased to amaze us that we could wake up, put our slippers on, and walk out the gate and down to the beach in about a minute, watching the turquoise waves pounding as we got closer. And then all those long, long walks along the spectacular beach, passing occasional other walkers or fishermen - fabulous! The beach proximity is the BIG plus here, but it’s also a big plus that the cottages are well equipped with kitchen equipment, beach stuff, etc. It’s hot in Hawaii in July, so it was very welcome to have the option of running ceiling fans in both the bedroom and living room, or running the A/C. The TV was a it tricky, but we’re old school so someone else could have probably figured it out. Every cottage was booked, but it was still a very quiet place to stay. The friendly owner, Tommy, was often around and had a lot of good tips. There’s a coin-operated washer and dryer on site, and they leave a huge jug of laundry soap for guests to use. Another bug plus is that this is located within a 5 minute walk of some really good restaurants - Kalapawai Bakery & Cafe and Ono Steak & Shrimp. Kalapawai’s name might imply breakfasts only, but it’s open all day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the food is fabulous. Just around the corner is family-run Ono Steak & Shrimp and they close early at 5pm, so get there early! The garlic shrimp and coconut shrimp are SO ONO (Hawaiian for delicious).

I used to live on Oahu and have visited multiple times since moving. Waimanalo Beach Cottages are always my go to! Tommy and Carolyn's Cottages are by far my favorite place to stay! Waimanalo Beach is one of the best on the island and is decently private. The cottages are just a short, barefoot walk from the beach. There are food/coffee places nearby and just a short drive from Honolulu. The cottages are perfectly equipped with everything you need, are very clean and quaint, and the property is very well maintained. We brought our baby the second time and felt perfectly safe staying here. If you're looking to experience the real island and not Waikiki, this is the place to do it!!

I have visited Oahu many times, and this is by far one of the best places I’ve stayed in terms of location and quaintness. The 2-minute walk to the fabulous beach makes this accommodation worth it all. Being able to walk to several great eateries close by was a bonus!

You have to pay a $200 cleaning fee but on entering our cottage we ourselves started wiping down the counter. Only 2 burners worked on the stove and those knobs were removed. The place was not properly cleaned. The sofa bed had pet hairs on the sheets. The furniture needed dusting, the kitchen table was being held up with some tape so we could not even use the table. We saw the guy Tommy the first day and never saw him again. There were pigeons every where hanging out. They pooped all over the vehicle in the parking spot that you have to pay for. They should not even be renting that cottage. I had to pay the cleaning fee and in exchange I got a dirty, filthy cottage. Makes me think if they even sanitize properly.
Worst 5 days ever!!!

Perfection! Secluded, undeveloped, relaxing, and just what we needed for a quiet relaxing vacation. Almost didn’t need a car as this place is on the beach and we didn’t want to go anywhere else!

The beach itself is usually calm enough for relaxing swimming or snorkeling, unlike the north shore with 40’ waves :) sunrise views are absolutely incredible.

We had cottage 1 and 11, perfect for ocean views and wave sounds all night long.

Self-catering is easy with well equipped kitchens, coin operated laundry on site etc.

NOTE: this is not the four seasons, people return to these cottages over and over again for its location, quiet undeveloped neighborhood, and self-catering amenities. The hosts were always there and very accommodating with tips and recommendations!! INCREDIBLE VALUE!

Perfect location! We stayed five nights in cottage number five. The exterior of the cottages and parking lot are nicely manicured. Although the cottages are set very close together we felt it was very private and quiet. The jaunt to the beach is short and can be done with no shoes.
We were delighted to see that there are two cats that man the front gate. They are not bothersome they stay to themselves yet if you want to pet them they love that too. I also must mention that there are pigeons. They are not bothersome at all! But they are always there, either on the roof of one of the cottages or in the center of the cottages milling around in the grass. There was never pigeon poop within the gates of the cottages, even in the grass! We also opted to rent one of the parking spots, which was well worth it, now here’s where the pigeon poop comes in. Our rental car had daily pigeon droppings on the hood.
The cottage, our bed was beyond comfortable and the pillows were fantastic. The cottage is definitely dated including all of the utensils, toaster, coffee pot, knives and cutting board but everything worked.
The couch was comfortable, and could accommodate three adults. The TV was large and updated although we didn’t use it much, it was nice for settling down at night.
If you are looking for a safe secure cottage right on the beach, one that you don’t have to fret over if you bring in a little sand, and gracious caretakers that want your stay to be wonderful, then this is your place.

We'll definitely be staying here again. Tommy, Carolyn, and Daniel are all awesome people! And Waimanalo beach is one of the most peaceful on the island. The room was also exceptionally quiet. My wife and I slept better than ever.

I stayed at cottage 3, a short walk to the beach thru a lane almost next to the property.
Cooking, coffee maker, 24 hr 7/11 at the end of the street.
The owner, Tommy, was very helpful as I faced a difficulty upon arrival.
I come from Australia with a range of insects, spiders and reptiles and was pleased to encounter little more than tiny ants. Keep surfaces clean of food crumbs and you won't be bothered.
I enjoyed staying at these laid back beach cottages.

This was a great place to enjoy family! There were 25 of us and used all 9 cottages. Tommy was awesome and Carolyn made it very easy to do reservations. My granddaughter was stung by a man-o-war and Tommy was there with ammonia to stop the pain. I loved the cottages and recommend staying there. The area is beautiful. Sealife Park is 5 minutes away and if you go to the luau you get into the park anytime they are open for free. I recommend the luau. The cottage grounds are beautiful and well kept. The beach is awesome although the ocean is a bit rougher than if you stayed in Waikiki or Aulani resort. We stayed at Aulani Resort before completing our vacation at Waimanalo Beach Cottages. The contrast was just what we were looking for. We wanted both experiences and it didn’t disappoint.

Review: Cottage #1 Stay, Mid April 2024

During our week-long stay in Cottage #1, booked directly through the owner's website, we experienced a mix of positives and areas for improvement.

Pros:

The cottage was clean upon arrival, with several upgraded features including tile floors, countertops, air conditioning unit and furnishings such as the sofa/futon and bed/mattress.
Essential amenities like cookware (2 pots & 1 skillet) were provided, and we appreciated the comfort of the bed.

Cons:

While some aspects were well-maintained and upgraded, there were noticeable signs of neglect, including dated ceiling lights, tub/shower insert and shower fixtures, and issues like peeling paint in the bathroom.
Window locks were broken, and window blinds were improperly installed (not trimmed and far too long) and damaged, affecting both functionality and aesthetics.
The kitchen table showed significant signs of wear. The curtains were a 'handyman' install and impractical and highly annoying to manipulate closed for moments of privacy from the neighbors outside the window.
Basic kitchen supplies were lacking, which was inconvenient for our stay. Several basic items that we would have used but we don't typically pack for vacation were not supplied, such as, scissors, cheese grater, food storage containers, chip clips and salt & pepper.

Comfort:

The bed provided excellent comfort, although the futon/sofa was less so, and there was nothing available, except the floor, for resting drinks while on the futon/sofa.
Beach chairs were available but in limited supply, requiring early acquisition.

Parking:

Ample (free) parking at all times of the day & evening during our stay. All parking, including property owned parking, is directly outside the property's gate. Free street parking is 1-2 minutes additional walk from the property's paid parking lot.

Summary:

Despite the fantastic location, the overall maintenance and furnishing of the cottage fell short of expectations. While individual issues were not significant enough to warrant immediate complaint and we didn't want to spend our vacation addressing these with the owner, their collective impact left us disappointed that the property has not been maintained and decorated to its full potential.

Most of the cottage's hold 2 people but there is 1 cottage that holds 4. You'll have to contact the owners on the price, we booked all of the cottage's so we got a discount.
