#32 of 45 hotels in Bar Harbor
Built as a residence in 1887, historic Central House opened its doors to the public in 1925, making it the longest operating inn in Bar Harbor. Originally named Briarfield (for the blackberries, so emblematic of Maine summers, that still grow in our border) Central House has a history of hospitality that extends to its earliest years. Please visit our website for a brief history! Located at the center of downtown Bar Harbor, Central House enjoys easy access to restaurants, shops, waterfront, Bar Island, the Bar Harbor Shore Path, the Village Green and Island Explorer buses. Walk or bike to Acadia. Please come and enjoy our welcoming front porch, where visitors to Bar Harbor have come to relax during one hundred and thirty Maine summers.

We checked in at the central house easily considering there is no front desk. Got into the room which was clean and tidy. Hotel is very centrally located. Parking was easy but we got there early. Everything about our experience was nice EXCEPT we couldn’t get housekeeping to clean the room at all. We were there 3 nights and no one came to make the bed, give towels etc. The little blurb about the services states they start at 9am and to put up the do not disturb sign if you don’t want housekeeping. If the do not disturb sign is still on at 11am they wouldn’t do your room that day. We didn’t have the do not disturb sign on the door and we were on of the room before 9am both days. We came back at around midday as we left something in our room to see they were working on our neighbours so quickly ran in, grabbed what we needed and left. We came back to the room that night and they had not been into our room. The next day we even put the ‘housekeeping required’ sign on the door in hope that we had made an error and not done it. We left the room at around 8.30-9am that morning and didn’t return till 9pm and no one had been in our room. We had the towels on the bathroom floor to be changed so had to shower with wet towels. Overall the hotel is nice but the lack of housekeeping and no front desk to request them really hurt it for us. We would return to bar harbour and potentially back to the central house but only if other options weren’t available.

cute, quaint, nothing new fangled or fancy but you shouldn't be spending a lot of time in the room anyway if you're in bar harbor and so close to acadia, great value, centrally located.  Inn keeper was very nice and helpful.

We stayed at Central House for four days. The place is clean, friendly, and super convenient to shops, waterfront, and rental places while still feeling quiet. Beth was communicative and helpful with our arrival and contactless check in. Can't say enough good things about Central House if you are looking for a no frills, friendly spot to stay over in Bar Harbor. We will be recommending it to all our friends and family.

I wanted to take the time to write a review. I did a lot of searching online before I booked this place. I had planned to stay there this June. But the Pandemic did not make that possible. The state of Maine will not allow this place to Honor my reservations unless I self-quarantine for 14 Days. I received a call from The central House, to let me know. They caught me at a busy time. I will note, they had to call a few times. I don't respond to a phone number I don't know. So she called back when I was at home. They did not hesitate to cancel and refund or rebook. It was clear they value their customers. I was not able to book, at that time. But I will tell you. I will make a point to stay here. Just with my phone interaction alone, I know this is a quality estalishment. They deserve for this story to be shared.

My parents booked this centrally located inn for 4 nights. Generally, they are fine with stairs, but the day before our arrival, my father hurt his leg and was unable to climb the stairs. Beth worked very hard to make sure that my parents had the ground floor room. It made my father's stay very enjoyable as he was able to sit on the porch and watch the action. The room was historic and charming, but most important was the incredible effort Beth made to assure my parents' a comfortable visit. Hotels should be judged on what they do if something goes wrong, and in this case, they excelled! Thank you!
