Many reviews on TA seem a little pre-occupied with Rex, the hotel's pug, offering stridently pro- or anti-attitudes. For my money he typifies the hotel's style which is individual, relaxed and cosmopolitan.
It should be obvious to anyone who has checked out the hotel's own...More
There is nothing corporate about this hotel - every area has a quirky character, from the library bar to the corridors and rooms. It works. It's also in a great location, close to the shops of Union Square and the cable cars to Fishermans Wharf....More
I found Hotel Rex to be a little on the dingy side, nothing was really clean ... from our rugs... to the bathroom (love finding other people's hair in the shower. Love it.) to the public areas. It's the worst to feel unclean in your...More

A great small hotel with such friendly and helpful staff. We enjoyed it so much more than a large impersonal hotel.
The location was great - near Union Square, shopping and Cable Car stops. As a result we were amazed at how quiet our suite...More

Originally home to rallies supporting the Union Army in the Civil War, this grand square has become the city's premier shopping and entertainment district containing the largest number of upscale department stores, chic boutiques, art galleries and theatres in the city. It's a large open area where tourists and locals gather, watch cable cars and crowds go by, enjoy a snack, or plan their day of shopping and
sightseeing, If feeling the pulsating energy of the city is on your agenda, Union Square is the place to soak it in.

Hi sorry for my late response been in the Lake district for a break. Anyway when we stayed the room was at the rear of the Rex and was dark however very nice quiet and comfortable. As I said if I stayed again I would go for a room at the front of the Hotel and the morning sunlight but then of course I would be on the street side so will probably get some traffic noise. Hope that helps.
