This is a beautiful hotel, but unfortunately we were given a room on the second floor facing the street. Unbeknownst to us, there was a festival on the square that weekend. The set-up crews worked late into the night on Friday and started again at 5 a.m. Saturday. There is absolutely no soundproofing; our bed might as well have been...

It’s unfortunate that you did not say a word to us that you had a problem with noise; we might have been able to move you to another room toward the back of the building. I think the event you are referring to is the Columbus Day parade, held here every year in October. This is the biggest event of...

We celebrated our anniversay in the North Beach Area of San Francisco at the wonderfull Washington Square Inn. Room #9 looks out to Filbert Street from the 2nd floor. The room was clean and it did not feel too small with a queen bed. The bathroom had a shower only and it was clean and well maintained. The room, the...

The location of this charming B&B is fabulous within walking distance of the Italian neighbourhood and Chinatown and overlooks the park. It is also within easy reach of downtown with a number of public transport options. The main shared living space is very attractive and inviting, however, our room was on the small side but quite charming. Breakfast was fresh...

nice, small inn. our bathroom was not en suite, but across the corridor- however that was ok, because the door to the bathroom could only be opened with the room key, too. The bathroom very spotless and modern. The room was a little small, but very nice, with flatscreen TV. We had room no. 12. In the late afternoon, wine...

We stayed at the Washington Square Inn because of its location and its membership in the Select Registry. It did not live up to the Select Registry standard. The location was good for our needs. We left our car parked and used our feet or the public transporation to get around. We stayed in room 6. There was barely room...

We are sorry that the room you chose was not large enough for you, we have many larger rooms that might have been more preferable to you, and we list the room diminsions on our website when you click on room details. Unfortunately light bulbs do fail occasionally and we have someone around 24/7 that can assist you. Your comments...

My wife and I just returned from spending four nights here. Three nights in Room 2 and one night in Room 8(more on the rooms later). Loved every minute. The staff is first class, helpful, friendly, but professional. The neighborhood is safe, alive, and colorful (groups of elderly Chinese women gather to do their morning stretches in Washington Park right...

I feel guilty that it has taken me this long (slightly over a year) to write a review of my stay at the Washington Square Inn during the last week of August 2010, but better late than never, I guess! As I have noted in one or two of my other hotel reviews, I like to choose accommodation that is...

My wife and I stayed 2 nights here to attend the Family Winemakers of California tasting event at Fort Mason on the 21st. W. S. Inn offers a cozy, quiet accomodation on the northeast corner of Washington Square. We had an upstairs room overlooking the tiny outside patio. Our room had a comfortable king bed, and the remote controlled ceiling...

After my fiancee and I got married on Friday at City Hall, we decided to come and stay at the Inn for our staycation in SF. My new husband was immediately enamored with the European old-world ambiance while being impressed at the modern-day security measures. The Inn is cozy but not overdone (as many B&B's are) and welcoming from the...

We lucked out and were able to make a fairly last-minute reservation in this classy little B&B/boutique hotel in the heart of North Beach. Our room was comfortable, even luxurious, though a bit small. My husband and I slept like rocks even with the windows open on a Friday night (our room looked out on courtyards rather than the street)....

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
