The Palace Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel in San Francisco, garners acclaim for its immaculate rooms and stellar housekeeping, complemented by a host of amenities including the opulent Garden Court. The hotel's service is generally celebrated for its attentiveness and warmth, though occasional lapses are noted. While some guests experience tranquility, others contend with noise intrusions. The value is regarded as favorable, balancing cost with quality and location, despite some extra fees. Nestled in a prime spot, the hotel's location ensures easy access to transport and attractions, and its atmosphere marries historic charm with contemporary luxury, especially during the festive season. Comfortable rooms are well-maintained, albeit some find them snug and lacking storage.

I had  the opportunity to visit the Palace for one night during the Labor Day weekend. I so enjoyed that stay, and the wonderful suite upgrade, that I booked a longer stay a few weeks later. I was not disappointed.

Although I didn't receive a fabulous suite upgrade, as they were sold out, I did get a very commodious deluxe larger room with a view out to Market Street. I loved the space and comfort of the room and housekeeping was very efficient in cleaning the room early and providing nightly turndown service. Staff throughout the property were professional, helpful and solicitous. My companion and I felt pampered and well taken care of. I loved the Byredo toiletries. The scent was intoxicating. Despite our room overlooking busy Market Street, the room was very quiet and afforded us both a good night's sleep. There was a bit of noise that seeped in from the adjacent room through the connecting door, but once I filled the door sill space with a towel, it was greatly reduced.

Breakfast at the Garden Court was very enjoyable, especially given the absolutely stunning surroundings. It's unusual to have such a grandiose environment in North America. One could have dry toast with water and still enjoy the experience. The food offerings were very good, but disappointing that the egg station was only open on the weekend. I loved the dim sum and smoked salmon that the Concierge advised me to sample. I was surprised to see chicken wings and breakfast burritos offered on various days during our stay. Unusual, but so tasty. The one weak spot was the quality of the baked goods. Croissants were supermarket quality and there were no other options apart from rather ordinary sliced bread. The sweet pastries were very sugary, and while they did satiate one's sweet tooth, they were a bit ordinary. I know there are much better baked goods available in San Francisco,  e.g. ONE65, so it was sad to see the bar set lower at the Garden Court. I would encourage them to match the quality with the surroundings. I would gladly pay a bit more for an improvement. That said, I paid only a $10 per person upcharge for the buffet from the complimentary continental breakfast I receive as a Bonvoy Titanium member, so there's that. Charge me $15 and improve the baked goods to make the calories worth the extra pounds.

Nonetheless, I love my stays at the Palace and will make it my hotel of choice when visiting beautiful San Francisco

Hotel is beautiful outside (building itself) and inside. Unfortunately, I traveled there when there was a lot of construction outside the hotel on the surrounding streets so one of the entrances was closed but once I got inside I admired how beautiful the lobby area was. That area was definitely luxury. Rooms aren't that big and for families traveling together it was easy to feel too crowded in their rooms. Upgrading to a deluxe room didn't offer much more space. Fourth floor is where we stayed and where we accessed the pool. The fitness room is top notch and the pool was huge. My kids loved it. One of the limited hotels in San Francisco we found that had a pool when booking reservations. Our floor smelled like chocolate because of Ghirardelli Chocolate having a location within the hotel and the scents seemed to travel up the stairs. I thought that was an added plus and put me in a good mood each time. They had a really good steak house in the hotel and I enjoyed not having to walk far to eat a good steak. Didn't seem like there a whole lot of dining options within two blocks outside hotel that interested me. There were a lot of stores and places to go within the area though if you like to hit the ground running and/or do a lot of walking.

My mom and I had a terrific stay back in May. It felt like a true vacation even though my mom is from the area. I went to school in San Francisco and always admired this hotel. I was so worried it would be an overpriced experience that under delivered, like some "luxury" hotels are, but it was the exact opposite. The staff was warm and welcoming. Housekeeping went above and beyond and gave us so many extras when we requested an additional shower cap. The hotel itself is really well maintained and it showcases its history with out showing its age.

The rooms were so lovely that we ended up spending more time in the hotel than usual just relaxing and enjoying the property. The beds were some of the comfiest that I've stayed in. The fitness center was very clean and overlooked the pool.

I booked through the Fine Hotel & Resorts program which made the stay even better. We were able to use the food and beverage credit at the Pied Piper and enjoyed breakfast under the beautiful ceiling of the Garden Court. The Garden Court deserves the praise it gets but the Pied Piper is also not to be missed - it's a perfect spot to enjoy a martini and the green goddess salad that was first created at the hotel. We also loved having a Ghirardelli right downstairs, perfect for ending the evening with a banana split.

I ended up extending one extra day because we were enjoying ourselves so much.

This stay reminded me what I love about these classic hotels, and even what I love about San Francisco.

Location is great with easy access to MUNI and BART. Walking to North Beach was an easy ~20 min walk as well.

I would 100% come back.

The hotel is objectively stunning, with a breathtaking lobby, beautiful wood doors in the rooms with high ceilings. As they say "they don't make things like they used to." Physically, this hotel is a gem.

I want to be able to give this hotel 5 starts, but there appear to be system issues that are really driving down the experience. Individually, each staff member was lovely which makes me wonder why these problems exist.

The biggest eye sore is the regular remains of customers' room service dishes, uneaten food, cups, glasses, mugs, ice buckets left in the hallway. The same dirty dishes would often be there for 24hrs. This was shocking to me as the housekeepers would literally be steps away from the soiled plates. I wonder if the removal of the dirty dishes falls under room service and not housekeeping? The cleaning of our room each day was perfect which is why I suspect this is a system issue.

I happen to not like coffee. I also happen to be able to make a free cup of tea in the morning in my room when I stay at a Holiday Inn or Comfort Suites. Unfortunately, that is not possible at The Palace. I asked for a hot water kettle to be sent to my room (with tea) and none arrived all day, so when I returned to the front desk in the evening to ask again, the (extremely helpful) front desk representative called room service to ask for a kettle. I happened to add "and the tea too," but was told that the tea would be an extra charge. The front desk agent then OFFERED TO GIVE ME HER OWN TEA BAGS and also to credit me $15 for the charge that room service required. I looked at her and said, "You know it doesn't have to be this way, right." She agreed.

I looked back at prior reviews and noticed in 2023 customers had to request coffee makers in their rooms.

I really want to encourage the management of this hotel to remember that small details make a big difference. You can do it. Tea is cheap. As Danny Meyer would say, "make it nice."

Bad experience. Stayed 6 nights. The room was full of dust. I call to get her cleaned up and they show up after four hours. The Response given by the cleaning lady about the reason for the delay was that the person who received the call had then gone to lunch and therefore had not communicated... it seemed to me that he was making fun of me. Since what day the room has not been cleaned in the required places (nightstands always full of dust, headboard even, see published photos) which for an allergic is a tragedy. Not to mention the bathroom door which had a sort of grate full of dust, probably never cleaned since it was assembled (photo attached). Luckily, they took it apart and cleaned it up, letting out a bunch of dust. I believe that all rooms have the same problem and that considering the attitude of the staff who simply reply to send an email, they will never be clean. Behind the apparent lacquer of this hotel lies a lack of professionalism and a total absence of supervision. Beautiful location for breakfast, too bad that the bread was days old and when I asked for fresh bread I was brought that I had already finished breakfast. In view of the complaints they granted me a discount of 200 USD on about 3000 spent. Micragnosis.

I just adore this hotel, and I’ve stayed here more times than I can count. Sure — no place is perfect. But the Palace tries so hard and responds when they fall short. (This stay? There was a mix-up with my room, twice, on a busy NYE, and it was graciously and promptly handled.)

The beds and linens are comfortable and some of my favorites. The towels and robes are high quality. The toiletries are thoughtful. The breakfast buffet is tasty, with attentive service.

It’s just always classy there: As just one example, I needed some female products this stay. Housekeeping immediately brought more than I needed to my room in a discrete, large, branded shopping bag. And the guy who brought them? Acted delightfully surprised to receive a tip. Just a silly anecdote that captures the spirit of the place.

Can’t wait to come back!

The hotel staff are all awesome. We especially enjoyed working with both concierge on duty this week. Awesome staff helped us get tickets to things we couldn’t get. They told us amazing places to eat at and always helpful. Rooms are beautifully made up and the location of the hotel has easy access to both trains and cable cars. Beds were very comfortable. I would say it would be nice to have a mirror over by the work desk. If your sharing the room it would be nice to be able to dry your hair when your friends taking a shower.

Old grand hotel, location just OK, as it's downtown (the district is dead due to the extreme lack of office space) we booked a deluxe suite with breakfast, bathroom far too small for a suite in this price range, closet tiny, surely due to the old building structure. When renovating the hotel, however, they should not only have done cosmetic work, but also adapted everything to today's standards. But that's normal for America and local hotel standards, and in international comparison, super expensive for very little service. Breakfast on the level of a youth hostel in Europe, cappuccino (watery and undrinkable) has to be paid extra for a breakfast price of USD 44 per person, sparkling water costs around USD 9 as well😤

Food in the bar, Pied Piper (American) was very good.

Conclusion: old box, with a nice lobby, price/performance unsatisfactory

The Palace is a large, immovable hotel with very beautiful architecture and below-average guest service. When we arrived, no one seemed to know that we had booked for three people. We were offered the option of booking for €50 per night, even though we had booked it at the beginning. The sofa bed that was made up later creaked with every movement, was much too short for our 1.90m tall son and had both a thin mattress through which you could feel every spring and only a thin duvet, unlike the main bed. Overall, a rather unpleasant experience. Only the breakfast tasted good, although the small print said that despite booking for three people with breakfast, only two were included in the room price. Unpleasant complaints. Staff only very moderately friendly. The stay was not a highlight of our vacation, for example in comparison with the Royal Hawaiian in Honolulu, which is in the same category and belongs to the same chain.

We stay at the Palace frequently because of its convenient location, comfortable rooms and excellent staff, but the one thing that really annoys us about the hotel is that dirty dishes are left in the hallways for hours or even overnight. There was a particularly gross plate on the floor near our room when we checked in yesterday. We called room service to ask them to remove it, yet the plate is still there 24 hours later. The same thing happened during our last visit. It’s just not what we expect from a hotel with “luxury” in its name. I’m sure the hotel can do better.
