Detailed Reviews

A conference brought us to the area. We were delighted by the scenic location, right across from a park and kitty corner from the church, on the very top of Nob Hill. Views from the room extended across the city. Although we arrived prior to check in we were offered an upgrade for what we thought was a very reasonably price by our charming front desk officer, who even spoke French with us! Our room (a Junior Suite) was very large and offered a sitting area. The decor and design of the room was so charming! It was out of a magazine. We were pleasantly surprised at the infrastructure of the hotel- plumbing was reliable, water was hot and water pressure was excellent in what is a historic property. We never had to wait for an elevator to our 11th floor room. Coffee, tea, and biscotti (yummy!) were available in the morning in the lobby, and infused water and fruit was available the rest of the day. Staff were so friendly and accommodating! Jarvis held the door for us, and Carlton helped us with all our questions. Ursula drove us in a town car, which is a service that the hotel offers. Very nice when you want to head out shopping or to a nearby restaurant but you are terrified of the hills!! Housekeeping staff were friendly and offered turn down service each evening. We kept the window open to listen to the sounds of the city- the rattle and bells of the cable cars (which run right in front of the hotel) and the chimes of the cathedral across the street. This was such a delightful hotel- the friendly service, beautiful atmosphere, and preferred location can not be beat. I can not wait to return!

The Huntington Hotel is my go to property for staying in San Francisco (I live across the bridge in the Oakland Hills). It sits atop Nob Hill across from the Grace Cathedral. The "Park View" side of the hotel offers sweeping views from the higher floors ( i was on 9th floor) of Alcatraz, the Bay, the Transamerica Pyramid, the Fairmont Hotel, and the surrounding area. I stayed in the Mulholland Suite this time and it was a phenomenal suite making for a wonderful trip. The main room of my suite had plenty of space to relax, have a glass of champagne, eat a meal and enjoy the sweeping views. The bedroom had a king bed and also had a fantastic view of the city and water. The Big 4 restaurant has old school charm with fantastic burgers and cocktails. The Nob Hill Spa is located inside the hotel and offers a relaxing atmosphere with wonderful amenities like an infinity pool, balcony with sweeping views of City and the Salesforce Tower, dry and wet saunas, hot tub, and a comfortable lounge. The massage treatments are expensive but the access to the spa facility for the day of your massage makes it worth it. I've stayed in many of the rooms at this hotel - from the executive king, to the junior suite and 1BR suites, all of which are great - but the Mulholland Suite was the best room I've stayed in to date. All of the staff at the hotel were friendly and very helpful. The Fairmont Hotel may be the "crown jewel" of the hotels in the area atop Nob Hill but I will take the Huntington hotel 10 out of 10 times over the Fairmont (which I've stayed at many times before as well). Looking forward to returning soon.

We really enjoyed our stay and everyone was very nice but at first we were denied access to the pool/spa area because the clerk at the spa reservation counter informed me that "our room" didn't have access to that part of the hotel. I thought after reserving a suite in the hotel and paying almost $500 per night that we would have access but I guess not? When I made a comment to the person working at the reservation/check in/out counter he quickly resolved the issue and after paying an additional $80, my wife and I were given access to the pool/spa area. Except for the pool/spa experience the service was excellent!

My wife and I go to San Francisco at least twice each year, and for the past few years we have been staying at the Huntington Hotel on Nob Hill. What a fine place this is! We look for a centrally located place in the city that is elegant, but not outrageously priced, with roomy suite or junior suite accommodations. The Huntington is a perfect match for us. In addition, it has the best bar in San Francisco as well as a fine restaurant. We have also enjoyed the excellent spa on some visits. The doorman always remembers us when we arrive back from an outing, and on our last visit the doorman remembered us even from previous stays. We had a trip planned for the end of May, 2020, but sadly we had to cancel due to the Corona virus. The concerts and museums we had planned to enjoy had cancelled their events and exhibitions. Although I had prepaid for our room I asked if I could be given a credit for a future stay. However, Brian went beyond my expectations and refunded all of my prepayment. What a fine hotel and considerate staff! We highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a friendly, well-run, and beautiful hotel for your next trip to the City by the Bay! The staff is amazingly friendly. Each day they greeted us by introducing themselves by name and making sure our needs were addressed. It was old school style and service with a modern day twist. The historic nature of the building and styling remains intact while updates (such as an amazing bathroom remodel) provide modern comfort. The location is has easy access to tourist sites and conference hotels. The town car service is an extra bonus. The rates were reasonable and we even got to upgrade our room the day we arrived.

Spent the afternoon touring around San Francisco and decided to stop in for a light snack and drinks at the Big Four Restaurant/Big Bar in the hotel (my daughter's recommendation). Great Choice! I am easily impressed by top notch bar and wait staff, and the Big Four has them. The ambiance is London's Pall Mall Club with dark polished woods, bronze, and varnished green leather chairs. Loved it. I can't remember what the ladies had but I was in heaven with a generous and stiff Old Fashioned and plate of pate'.

Terrific location...walking distance to many places.
Iconic hotel with history.
We upgraded the room to a suite that was huge. Room was quite nice but getting a little worn.
Comfortable bed and linens. Easy check-in.
Doormen must learn to greet everyone including those of us that use Uber-Lyft.
We were ever greeted...never!

Pros: this hotel is in a fantastic location in Nob Hill. Hotel has old charm to it and it smells great since the Nob Hill Spa is inside of there and the great smell carries! Nice having the Big 4 downstairs although it was tough getting a drink in there Saturday night.
Cons: the room was SO HOT. I guess the hotel has no AC? There is a "fan" where there is an old dial to choose temperature and high, medium or low speed. Even at 50 degrees (lowest) it really is only blowing hot air. Luckily you can open windows but there are no screens and when it rained at night you could not only hear the rain but see it coming inside. It became just so stuffy and uncomfortable we could barely sleep.
Also, the shower would not turn on. We finally called the front desk to ask if there was a trick to get it on and they sent up a bellman who came very quickly which was appreciated. He implied they are broken and people have been breaking them when trying to turn them on so appreciated us calling. He showed us how to pull the nozzle out to get water. You'd think they would just explain this at check in if they know it is an issue?
Lastly, there were 3 fire trucks parked outside in the morning, which a bunch of them trying to hoist a ladder up to a window on the side of the hotel. Unnerving to say the least and never were informed what was happening with that.
All in all it is a charming but old hotel. I would probably elect to stay in Financial District or a newer hotel next time but solely due to how hot the room was.

Good Morning Kristib647, Thank you for your feedback and we're fortunate to have such a great location, premiere day spa in the city and our iconic Big 4 Restaurant. I'm only too sorry your room experience wasn't what you or we wish for our guests. We did have some challenges with our AC system and worked as quickly as possible to get them rectified. It clearly didn't happen in time to save your stay and for that we hope you will accept our sincere apologies. We do pride ourselves on service excellence and it's great to hear our bellman was so immediate with your room call and information. We are looking forward to a stunning renovation this coming year and will be addressing your comments in the refresh. We do hope you will give us another opportunity in the future to wow you with our product and proven service. Cheers, Brian

We stayed here New Year's Eve because we had tickets at the Masonic which is right next door. The location is perfect! The King suite was on the corner, and my friends couldn't believe who spacious it was. Both rooms had plenty of room and we both said the beds were incredibly comfortable. The park view is so nice with the Grace Cathedral right outside the window. The Big 4 is always a must-visit when in the area. We have been there several times previously and we love the look and feel, even though the service is always slow. The hotel staff was very friendly and in the morning they already had our car out front waiting for us when we checked out. Also, we were hoping it wasn't going to be too noisy in the hotel since it was NYE, but we didn't hear anything and it was quiet which was so nice. We will definitely stay here again and next time we want to check out the spa. Thank you for a lovely stay!

SF has a few hot days a year. You might encounter a hot day or two July-September. However the bay breeze usually takes care of that. I have stayed at the Huntington many times. We stayed weekends in July, August and September. Never once did we use the AC. It was so cold and damp during an August weekend, we may have used the heat.
Yes- the Big 4 Restaurant and Lounge is like the inside of an elegant private club. Service and environment are absolutely wonderful- you will love it !!!
Monday to Thursday you have access to the pool for $40. Friday to Sunday you have to book a spa treatment. Book another hotel if you want use of a pool!!
