A wonderful apartment rental! Joel and Sam were lovely hosts, and we really felt like we belonged in the city by choosing such a wonderful real place to stay. In one word, their home and the neighborhood are AUTHENTIC, a true home away from home. The decor in the one bedroom upstairs suite was both beautiful and inspiring. Both Joel...

I stayed in the Garden Room when my fiancee was having surgery at the Davies Campus of CPMC Hospital (not the main hospital on Buchanan). This was incredibly convenient to the hospital - entrance across the street - and the owners were wonderfully friendly, helpful, and supportive. (Thank you!) The apartment was very clean and had small but fully furnished...

We recently stayed with Joel and Sam in their Garden Suite for three days over New Year's, and it is the nicest and most comfortable find we have ever made in San Francisco. ,The lower level looks even better than the pictures on the site, is beautifully furnished (with lots of original art and pottery as well) has a kitchen...

My wife and I stayed at Sam and Joel's for five nights in early November, at the start of our three week honeymoon. We opted to hire an apartment rather than stay in a hotel because we wanted more freedom and space to chill out in. We had an amazing time. In particular, Joel's recommendations on places to go/things to...

We recently stayed four nights with Sam and Joel at the Castro Suites. We had the downstairs apartment, a spacious two-room unit which has two sleeping spaces, a king size bed in a bedroom with a door that closes, and a full size daybed/sofa in the living area. The furnishings and decoration are the highest possible quality, both in the...

I have experienced the incomparable hospitality of proprietors Sam and Joel for over 25 years and always look forward to staying at Castro Suites whenever I am in San Francisco. The location is quiet and convenient to area restaurants and public transportation. The artistically decorated rooms are clean and well maintained. The beautiful garden in back, expertly cultivated, is the...

Every time I leave this apartment I feel I am being torn away from my true home. I live on the other side of the world but through repeated stays in the Castro Suite apartment I have grown to love the city of San Francisco and this lovely house and the ground floor apartment has become my home away from...

I've stayed here more than once, and at each of the apartments. Both are exceptional. Upstairs is more open, downstairs is cozier: depends on what you are looking for. You won't find a better place in S.F. for your dollar. Or a better place in S.F. Period. Most recently, I was here for a vacation, but I've also stayed here...

I stayed at the Castro Suites earlier this month and I loved every minute of it. The location is ideal…just off a tree-lined quiet street in the heart of the Castro. It’s also a 5-minute walk to Castro Street, the Metro, some excellent restaurants (the French resto L’Ardoise was my favorite), shops, and some charming Victorians. The suite itself was...

Staying in The Castro

Neighbourhood Profile
The Castro
A flourishing commercial area that acts as San Francisco's LGBT community center and cultural heart, the Castro is a neighbourhood welcome to everyone. As one of the first predominantly LGBT neighbourhoods in the United States and currently its largest, it remains one of the epicenters of activism in the nation. Grand theatres and glitzy shops now compete with bars and fashionable eateries for attention, drawing visitors from around the world to the bright rainbow flag acting as its beacon.
