(it seems that some of the reviews here are for the wrong hotel or, perhaps, a former hotel on this plot) . . . This is a new hotel and opened about 2 weeks ago (Nov-2022)

The Canopy has a cool, industrial vibe -- mixing splashes of color and leather furniture with prominent iron girders lining the ceiling. My King-City View room was a compact space, but still hip and enjoyable with a round desk, Nespresso coffee station and walk thru (combination) closet/bathroom. Industrial fixtures and trendy design/furniture made the space feel special and luxurious and the bed (esp. pillows) were very comfortable.

Dinner/drinks on the top floor give way to nice skyline views, a festive environment and very friendly staff. The sliders (x3) and fries are of good size for the price.

We stayed here for five nights over the new year period.

Positives
The design of the hotel is great, very modern, very cool, and the roof-top bar had some great views.
The bedrooms were funky and we loved the huge shower and how hot it got. The TV was a great media centre. Loved the bar in the room and the really reasonable minibar prices. The fresh coffee was a real treat. The hotel staff were lovely and nothing was too much trouble. Good location to get into the city easily.

Negatives
The rooms are not quiet. We had traffic noise all night, like we had the windows wide open, when they aren't actually able to be open. One set of ear plugs were left in the room, but it would have been better if the windows were resealed to stop the majority of the noise.
The bar staff at the roof bar were not as friendly as the rest of the hotel. We were up there having drinks with friends and asked if they could turn down the music a little as it was so loud, but they refused. They lost out, we went to a different bar which was quieter and drank there for the rest of the night.
The food in the Commons Club was okay, but very overpriced for what it was. Also, they stopped serving the breakfast menu during the holiday period but hadn't updated the website. The brunch menu had far fewer choices on it for breakfast and was more expensive.
NYE - the hotel was a hot mess this night. We were told at check in on the 30th that it would be a silent disco due to licensing laws, however on the night the music was blasting, the queue of people trying to get into the hotel bars was all the way down the block and when we got back from the fireworks at 1am the music was reverberating through our room. We appreciate it was NYE, but the hotel also has guests and some people want to be heading to bed at 1am.
Parking - $65 for valet parking when the car park around the corner was $12 a day seemed rather expensive.

Overall it is a nice hotel, but lots of small niggles that made it less than ideal for us.

I recently stayed at the hotel for a week on business and have to say that the hotel is really great. The aesthetic of the room was great and I enjoyed the technology within the room from the lighting to being able to cast my MacBook to the television for reviewing work. The mini bar in the room was reasonably priced and the staff left some complimentary treats for me on my initial night.

They do have a gym in the hotel which is just your standard gym. 50lb dumbbells and below, a cable machine, and some bikes, ellipticals, and treadmills. The rooftop bar is really great for a happy hour cocktail after a day of work. The views of SF are amazing from up there.

That being said, the construction of the Central Subway Line makes the hotel really unattractive to stay for any type of business trip. Construction began nightly at 4am each night and even earplugs couldn’t drown out the noise from the trucks and equipment.

The staff was kind enough to switch my room to the other side of the hotel a few days into my stay, but If you’re thinking about staying, I would make a strong effort to let the staff know to put you on the other side of the building if you do end up staying there.

Unfortunately I don’t think I could stay at the hotel again given the construction concerns. The hotel really needs to do a better job working with the city to have construction start at the legitimate time it is supposed to start and not the middle of the night.

Wow -- experience with hotel room, Front Desk team and Night manager....awful!!  I mentioned to the morning front desk person that one of the two vanity lights was burned out and could they have someone replace the bulb.  Upon my return, the light bulb was not replaced nor was the room cleaned.  I called down to the front desk, "My room has not been cleaned and the light has not been replaced." Response, "What would you like me to do?"  Only after the third time, he sent someone up.

Coffee bags in the room are inconsistently replaced; thus, no coffee. When I called down to ask for a coffee bag, the man brought packets of coffee, no filters or cream.  I called the front desk and they had no idea what I was referring too!!! When I returned that evening, I asked to speak to the manager and was introduced to the night manager.  I explained the importance of having coffee in the room along with what is needed to make the coffee since you can't order coffee from the room.

The next morning I opened the brown bag to make coffee and there was no cream!!!  When I called down to ask for cream to be brought up the night manager brought cream and in a condescending tone said, "I asked you if everything was ok with the coffee and you said it was."  I responded, "It wouldn't occur to me to open the bag to check to see if everything was in the bag." "Well I asked you."  I was taken back "I believe you are borderline insulting me."  Her response, "This hotel is not for everyone." and walked away.

SF Virgin is just a Wonderful place to stay if you’re in SOMA and want to feel welcomed and cared-for. The rooms separate the bathroom from the bed area and the showers and toilet have their own quarters. Showers are luxurious with overhead and hand-held options. Overall a great place to consider for your next stay

The chamber is small, but the space well used. It was refreshing to have an affordable mini bar. Food and drinks though are expensive ($30 for a cheeseburger and a simple cocktail $15). An Uber is a must since most SF sights are not in the area ($30 for an Uber ride to the Chase Center). The price of the room was affordable for the city but they will get your money elsewhere so make sure you bring a lot!

During these volatile times you would think that hotels would show some flexibility but not the General Manager of the Virgin Downtown SF Hotel. When I travel to SF I stay at other hotels but thought I would try Virgin when I visit SF in May. Last month I made a two night, non-refundable reservation at Virgin but a couple weeks later discovered that a dear college friend wanted me to stay at his Northern California home one of the two nights. Consequently I asked Virgin if I could cancel one of my two nights at their hotel. Recognizing that they were losing one night of a non-refundable reservation I offered to pay more for my other non-refundable night’s stay. Given that I was giving the Hotel two months to sell my hotel room for one of the two nights I figured they would honor my request; I figured wrong. The General Manager refused to be accommodating. Needless to say, unless the fee for one of my two nights is suddenly waived upon my arrival in May, I will never stay at the Virgin Downtown SF Hotel ever again. In fact, I will never stay at a Virgin Hotel anywhere. Short term thinking by the Hotel General Manager.

Lived in SF for a few years and now I have monthly stays for work and I can't say enough good about Virgin. Facilities/amenities, food/beverage, room/bedding, & above all the customer service thanks of many from the moment the door opens from the bell to the front desk staff to the bartender and the back of house staff. Every touch point a guest has is made with delicate and fine detail with foresight of your needs. A large part of this impact is due to the help of Caty Moothart who manages their loyalty program called "The Known." Highly recommend signing up. I'd love to give shout outs to many others as all the staff has treated me so well but I don't remember all their names. If I could give any negative feedback it would be the valet service is a bit slow but I am sure that is contracted out to another company. Otherwise great place overall.

Unfortunately I’m unable to give the hotel zero for the rating, terrible isn’t a strong enough summation of them.
I’m absolutely disgusted by the hotel and it’s customer services.
We booked a 2 night stay for July and we paid the full amount at the time of booking back in January.
In June we received an email saying they are cancelling our booking due to changes in management and we will be refunded.
3 months and countless calls at our expense from the U.K., countless emails, no refund.
No matter who we spoke to at the hotel, nobody would raise a finger to help us, at times they wouldn’t even acknowledge we even had a reservation with them.
They would palm us off with a phone number to call...a J Singh, the number never rings and you can’t leave a message either.
And an email address for J Singh. Again despite +20 email we never got a single reply or even acknowledgment our emails had been read.
Every email sent we would copy in every senior person at the hotel whose email we had and yet not one person would step forward and reply or offer to help in anyway. That tells me everything I need to about them and there so called “brand”.....laughable!

5 months passed and not one email or anything from the hotel, and it’s 10 months in total that they’ve had our money, so we had no choice but to start a charge back process with our credit card company to get our money back.
Had we not done this they would of kept our $600, of that I have zero doubt.

I’ve stayed at virgin hotels many times before and have written reviews which I will be shortly removing from this site.
I was planning to stay at both the Nashville and Dallas hotels next year but they have made it impossible for me to ever give them my business again.

Disgusted, disappointed, angry....doesn’t even come close to what I feel of the hotel. The worst customer service I’ve had the misfortune of experiencing.

I stayed at the Virgin during a recent business trip to SF. I had no expectations beforehand, but my stay was comforting and near flawless. The front desk was attentive and always available, even during my 1:00 AM arrival. The room was minimalist yet well-appointed, with luxurious choices of materials and thoughtful floor-plan. The shower was especially opulent compared to most hotels, with bench seating. I enjoyed the desk area for getting work done, and the barn door style separator between the "hall" of the room and the "bedroom". The tv and view was great, as was the Everdene rooftop bar, and 2nd floor gym. The only things to keep in mind, is you'll be able to overhear guests partying in the room next door, and the room doesn't come with kitchenette, or microwave (it does have an electric kettle, bar, and mini-fridge).
