Nestled near Fisherman's Wharf, the Argonaut Hotel captures the hearts of visitors with its nautical charm and prime location, making it a convenient base for exploring local attractions. While service generally earns accolades for being friendly and attentive, a handful of guests have encountered issues with communication. The spacious, well-maintained rooms offer comfort and style, though some guests note the sting of high fees for parking and resort amenities.
The Blue Mermaid restaurant and the hotel's cleanliness are among the features that consistently garner praise. Despite some comments about costly extras, many find the unique ambiance and attentive service to be worth the expense.

If I were to return, I would still opt for this hotel. Well looked after, with style choices that certainly make it recognisable, the plus is the location: facing the bay and a few steps from the wharf. The area is full of shops, restaurants and clubs, but the hotel is located at the end of the street and there is no nuisance, even at night. The rooms are very comfortable, pleasantly furnished, large and clean. Courteous and helpful staff. Inside there is also a good quality restaurant, where you can also enjoy excellent breakfasts (not included). The location also favors travel to the center as it is located next to the cable car terminus which reaches Union Square in about 20 minutes. You pay for quality and so does the location, however Argonaut adds a series of extras which then further increase the price. In reality these are "bonuses" which could at least partly be recovered with various discounts and the use of some services. The fact remains that in the end they are largely not requested/used and therefore an extra remains. Finally, pay attention to parking: car valet (taxes included) costs over $80/day...!!!

The Argonaut is in an historic building which is an old industrial building with lots of lovely features. It has a maritime themed decor which is appropriate for Fisherman’s Wharf. It was cosy and charming. We had a city view room on the second floor which looked out onto the outside dining area of the restaurant. The room was very large with a huge bed and cosy furniture. Lots of lighting options and a shuttered window which opened. Full mini bar available. We arrived at 9pm and the restaurant closes at 9pm which didn’t bother us but it would have been nice to have had complimentary water bottles in our room instead of a charge for water. The coffee machine was good and I had extra coffee brought to the room as I ran out of decaf. Staff on reception are very friendly and helpful. We loved the location as we hadn’t stayed on Fisherman’s wharf and there were lots of fun activities nearby. It was easy to walk or get transport to other areas. We had breakfast in the restaurant twice which was nice with efficient service. We were given some vouchers for coffee to go and also a glass of house wine each. Overall a very good stay and a great base for exploring the city!

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
We stayed at the Argonaut hotel for three nights as a family of 4 with two children aged 16 and 11. We had a family room consisting of 2 queen beds which we all found very comfortable and slept well every night - the room was a good size for 4 people with plenty of room for our cases.
Toiletries are provided in the bathroom (shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, hand soap and hand moisturiser). All towels and face cloths are also provided. In the room, there was free coffee which we didn’t use, bottles of water and wine (you had to pay for both of these); there was also a fridge and you could get ice from a room down the hallway. In the room we also had a safe, iron and ironing board as well as an umbrella.
Our room was clean and all staff we interacted with were super helpful. The lobby was peaceful and the fire welcoming when there was a chill in the evening.
There was a small gym which we used whilst staying; the gym consists of 4 treadmills, a cross-trainer, bike, weight machines and free weights. We went early and there were only a few others using the gym so we were able to use all the equipment as we wanted.
The location of the hotel is superb being round the corner from the end of one of the lines for the cable car and walking distance from Fisherman’s Wharf. Venture further afield for a true taste of San Francisco.
Be aware of the teddy on the bed which I managed to get to before our 11 year old as it costs!
We would happily stay here again.

I am so completely disappointed with my experience here. I booked this hotel for the sole reason that they accommodated my vehicle with valet parking. I am very aware of the awful stuff problems that happens with cars parked in lots and on the street in San Francisco so I thought I was good to go. I called this hotel days after making my reservation (months ago) because I knew I’d be traveling with a Thule on top of my SUV and wanted to make sure that was okay or if I should travel without. The man I spoke to told me they had valet parking for oversized vehicles and that it would be $80+ a day instead of the $75 they charge for regular vehicles. I even verified on the website that they accommodated oversize vehicles. As soon as I pulled up to the valet, after 6 hour drive, I was told that they could not valet my car because it was too big. I told them I had already called to verify, and they basically blew me off and told me to park at a lot 2 blocks down. The guard working at that lot told me that my car probably wouldn’t make it through the night because it was really bad in San Francisco. Sure enough, a car next to me that didn’t have anything in it had its windows shattered.
Then began the very stressful process of trying to find a safe place for my vehicle. I found a parking garage over half a mile away that had an 8 foot clearance so I moved my car there and walked back with my kids. I could not sleep at all that night because you said that breakdown happen and sure enough, when I picked my car up there was an SUV that had been broken into. After a night of no sleep because of the anxiety, I requested to only stay one night instead of the three I had booked. They were not willing to cancel my reservation and told me that they would have to charge me for all the nights aside from one night, but they would, waive the $40 resort fee out of courtesy to. HA!
After I checked out of the hotel, I was texted that they were not going to do that and that I had to go through the third-party that I booked the hotel through. That third-party said I had to go through the hotel itself since the funds were released to them the second I checked in. The switch was absolutely ridiculous. The website clearly says oversize vehicles cost extra, but they are saying that that is the length of the vehicle.
The whole thing seems so shady and a money grab. Not only do they charge almost $100 a day to park your vehicle, there’s a $40 a day resort fee, and every other thing cost insane amount of water. A bottle of water in the hotel room is eight dollars. The 1 ply laundry bag and the hotel room is $11 . The bathroom shower was dirty and the faucet for the tub was broken so only a shower worked. If you have little kids you know how important a tub is.
The manager said he would refund my money if I could prove that they say they accommodate “camper trucks”. I didn’t have a camper or a truck. It was literally an SUV with a roof box and if you know what those are you know they’re not that big so the garage is obviously short.
Just be aware of what you’re getting yourself into. The hotel is beautiful and the location is nice but they will milk you for every penny you have and then pull a bait and switch on you.

Hello, Thank you for choosing to stay with us, and we appreciate knowing you enjoyed our location in the heart of Fisherman's Wharf. I also want to clarify your account of events. First, you arrived in a camper with a Thule rack on top. Hotels.com, through which you booked, clearly lists on our page that there is a height restriction for parking. I apologize if there was any confusion about what constitutes an oversized vehicle, and for assuming that guests know a parking garage would have height limitations (even though the site you booked on clearly lists this). We have no record of a car being broken into and did our best to offer alternative parking accommodations at one of our neighboring hotels, which is only four blocks from us and has an open-top parking lot. As we previously stated, if you can provide us with any information where we steered you wrong, we would of course waive any penalties per the terms of your booking. Our team always strives to make all of our guests happy, and we pride ourselves on our knowledge of the hotel and city, as evidenced by many reviews on sites like this. We would never have told anyone we can accept a camper. I do wish you had a better stay, and I hope you and yours were able to enjoy our beautiful city. Tony Roumph Managing Director

The hotel has impressive marketing photos but for us the marketing was not the reality.
Set in a grand building, in a good location for access to Fishermans wharf, this borderline themed hotel is lacking in many areas. We arrived early and despite enquiring about an early check in and receiving a reply we were disappointed to learn on the day that it cost an additional $75, this could have been communicated prior to our arrival. We found the reception staff unwelcoming and quite curt. Whilst any hotel guest expects professionalism, this wasn't that,it just came across as frosty. The room we were first allocated was a complete no no for us. whilst the exterior appears to have views of the surrounding area at least half the rooms literally face into the window of the opposite bedroom, it was like a prison with plantation shutters. When we complained and asked to be moved we were told that's the room we booked. we showed the marketing photos from Booking.com to show what we were expecting. the receptionist said she had never seen the photos before and wasn't sure where they were from. surely the hotel should show due diligence and check what marketing material is out there on the various booking platforms they choose to advertise on so the customer can make an informed decision? we were upgraded to a courtyard room. we aren't entirely sure what the hotels definition of courtyard is but it's not the same as ours. We did not travel from Australia for a view into another guests room nor a view of the garbage. The new room, whilst pleasant, had downfalls. The desk could not be used for its actual purpose as it housed the coffee station, a huge lamp, marketing material etc but there was no other table or desk in the room for my husband to work. We had 2 queen beds but there wasn't a nightstand on each side of the bed(s), the bathroom for such a huge room was tiny with the towels stored within the shower area. There was such a huge entrance to the room and that could have been better purposed to house either another table or a closet for towels.
The only guest lounge for the hotel is actually in the lobby and the only day we chose to relax there there was a huge conference meet up. The noise they created was deafening. When I asked if there was another lounge I was told the only other place to relax would be our room. The bar is pleasant enough but the selection is small. All in all the hotel was OK but given the rates charged was not what we would have expected.

Hi Sam, Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback, and I appreciate knowing you had an overall enjoyable stay with us though I wish we did better to impress. Setting and exceeding expectations is extremely important to me, I will be sure to triple check all photos that Booking.com has posted with each of our room types. Our interior/courtyard rooms that do lack an exterior view, make up for it by being completed isolated from the outside sounds making for a perfect nights rest for those that sleep on the lighter side. Our Bayview rooms offer stunning views of either Alcatraz or the Golden Gate Bridge but do come at a premium based on demand and we clearly label each room category with its corresponding view. Our team should have been better to direct you to our business center if the lobby was not as relaxing as you would have hoped for, and i will be sure to address this with our team. Thanks again, and I do hope your travels spent Stateside were memorable. Tony Roumph Managing Director

We are Bay Area natives doing a one night staycation at Fisherman's Wharf with our three year old. We could not have asked for a better location and hotel.
The Argonaut has a fun nautical theme that fits the touristy location, while somehow staying classy. The building is a historic structure, and the rooms and staff were at the top of a four star hotel experience. The value seemed reasonable, considering the location and recent prices around the Bay Area.
The breakfast at the restaurant is not as good as the best local breakfast joints, but it's not bad either. It's expensive, in line with what I would expect for a tourist hotel.
The communications were exactly right for us - one prep for stay, one during our stay advising us of check out time etc., and one after we left.
The location is right on the wharf, with across the street access to Aquatic Park, the cable cars, Hyde Street Pier, and an enjoyable walk down to Pier 39 through the heart of the touristy shops.
There were a few touches I won't mention because it might spoil them, but suffice it to say that we and our three year old were delighted. The King Suite was worth the extra if have it, with a suave front room, a legit dining table, and a very large bathroom with jacuzzi tub.
It is so nice to go to a full-on tourist hotel and feel like folks bothered to put thought and care into their guests' experience. I had to leave a review just to say thanks.

Hi there, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts and its always rewarding to read a review like this, knowing all of our hard work and attention to detail made for a great stay! While I am a bit subjective, our suites are worth the extra cost if available, close to 1,000 sq ft making space for a large family, they are a treat and bigger than most apartments you will find in SF. I also appreciate you noting our theme and decor along with the historical aspects of our hotel - not many hotels that I know of, have a Nstional Parks Museum attached to them. Thanks again, and I hope the next time your travels bring you to this side of the bridge, we have the pleasure of welcoming you at the Argonaut! Tony Roumph Area Managing Director

We stayed at the Argonaut to celebrate 2 birthdays, mine and my daughter's and our stay was a top tier experience! We stayed in the largest corner suite, accompanied by a second adjoining room. The suite was impressively spacious, included a dining area, living space, bed area, and a jacuzzi with a breathtaking view of the bay. With our reservation including food credits, every aspect of our stay felt worth it and the hotel's location couldn't have been better, placing us conveniently close to everything we wanted to experience.
A special mention goes to Stephanie at the front desk, whose warm welcome and thoughtful gesture of wine, chocolates, and birthday cards made our stay even more memorable. Thank you for the enthusiastic service, it truly made our celebration unforgettable.
We hope to come again next year.

Look, this isn't going to be the fanciest stay you can find, but it's a great location for the price. Resort fees are incredibly high given the amenities, but they were clearly disclosed and we chose to accept them.
The location is perfect for the touristy Fisherman's Wharf San Fran experience. Everything is within walking distance - Ghiradelli Square, Pier 39, cable cars, restaurants, Palace of Fine Art, etc. If healthy walks are not possible for your group, ubers were $10 or less to all of these attractions.
We did NOT appreciate the hotel chosing to leave a carefully cellophaned stuffed animal sea lion to tempt a child upon entering the room for the first time. That just lacks tact - I would hope management would reconsider better ways to let parents know that stuffed animals with their hotel logo are for sale. It started our trip with a damper being put in the position to have to disappoint our child before even getting unpacked. Poor taste for sure.
We found the staff to be welcoming and friendly. We ate in the Blue Mermaid hotel restaurant for breakfast and were all pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and service. There were also some interesting eateries within walking distance.
One of two elevators was still down during our stay (I see others having complained about this for quite some time). We did see crews working on it almost every day during our week long stay. It seems it is a difficult fix, but it was encouraging to see that an effort is being made and everyone made the one elevator work by being considerate to allow people in where possible. There were busier times, but we never waited more than 10 minutes to get to/from our room.
During our stay, we had everything we requested and having this location made a great spot to crash between adventures, allowing us enough time to get to the next thing and still having some time to recharge between events. Sitting by the fire in the hotel lobby was pleasant when we were waiting on part of our crew.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Argonaut. We stayed 8 nights over Easter, On arrival we were lucky to have been upgraded which we appreciated. The room was superb with a comfortable bed and a good size bathroom. The room was clean and serviced perfectly throughout our stay. Staff are very friendly and the bar/restaurant is great. We did find that the bar closed quiet early on some evenings which surprised us and we didn't think this was fitting of an international hotel. Last orders called at 9.30pm some evenings. The food quality in the restaurant was excellent and the bar had a great selection of wines, beers and cocktails. The hotels location is perfect for anyone wanting to stay in the fisherman's wharf area. We used uber to travel around the city as we found them cheap and accessible.

My husband and I stayed at the Argonaut hotel in May 2023 on 2 occasions, our 1st stay was for 6 nights and our 2nd stay was for 5 nights, this hotel was great, staff were extremely friendly and efficient. On both occasions we were luck enough to be checked in by Stephen who was on the front desk, Stephen is extremely efficient and helpful and knowledgeable, he is a great asset to the hotel. The hotel is in a great location near to all amenities and tourist attractions especially the old trolley to take you down town, this is just around the corner from the hotel. The breakfasts in the blue mermaid restaurant were great, we had breakfast there each morning, there is a good choice of hot and cold breakfast items. The rooms are comfortable. The household staff do a good job of cleaning your room and are helpful if you need anything. We would recommend this hotel. We hope to stay at this hotel again.

Tips in the US are high, especially compared to the UK. A good rule of thumb is to double the sales tax, which in San Francisco is 8%
Restaurants & coffee bars often add the tip on the bill without asking -15 to 20%
Even fast food joints expect a tip.
