Monte Cristo is a gem! We loved the eclectic urban neighborhood. It was a cinch to Uber around the city. Our 2nd floor room was quiet and perfectly appointed. Breakfast and wonderful homemade treats throughout the day were much appreciated. Thank you Chef Nick!

Sometimes when you travel you want the luxuries of a full service property with a grand lobby, large publics spaces, bar etc. And then sometimes you want to feel like you are at home away from home, with a sense of the city you are visiting.. and that was our wonderful experience at the wonderful classic B&B Monte Cristo. Kind of a funky b&b, but enjoyable. Small room #16 is quiet by city standards. Room upstairs with access up a narrow stairwell. Small bathroom but shower was great and toilet seat heated. King bed comfortable but pillows not that great. No air conditioning but Windows can open. Very gracious hosts. Breakfast bar with fresh fruit and hot food on... More

Our family have stayed at many bed and breakfast in California and each have there own special perks. This was location, food, hospitality, and comfort. The in keeper was the best with our stay in San Francisco. Our stay was 7 days long, we pick the Monte Cristo due to it was close to UCSF medical hospital. My son had... More

This bed and breakfast inn has a cozy charm that sets it apart from those corporate chain hotels. The bed was the most comfortable I have ever slept in. Bathroom was very sleek and modern, with motion sensor lights that automatically turn on and off. I felt like I was in a Victorian bedroom in a mansion rather than in... More

This is a beautiful place to stay, the owners eclectic taste makes it much more interesting than a corporate hotel. The bed was so comfortable and unlike the previous 5 nights in the financial district we were not woken at 3.00am by the street cleaning machine. The breakfasts were great, lots of interest fruit plus lovely bacon and eggs, and... More

An historic, small, (15 rooms I think) Victorian hotel located slightly out of town in a good neighborhood with good bus connections.Staff friendly and helpful. Rooms compact with no aircon, decorated and furnished in the Victorian style complemented with high tech bathrooms. Free Wi-Fi and house computer with printer to enable boarding passes to be printed, Coffee/tea, biscuits and cake... More

The Monte Cristo provides excellent accommodation and highly personalised service. Jack, the manager (owner), is a wealth of local San Francisco advice for travellers. Terri is a very caring lady who cooks breakfast and provides advice also. She was so lovely to us and showed my daughter how to make a paper purse and a clever card trick. The B&B... More

This is the best hotel I've stayed in for years, and I stay in a lot during business travel. The room was excellent, the breakfast and the staff were brilliant. Would go back again in a second. It had aa classy feel unlike other hotel chains.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
If the walls of the Monte Cristo could talk, what stories they could tell, for this remarkable building has been a part of San Francisco since 1875. When the great fire swept the city after the 1906 earthquake, homes were put to the torch on Van Ness Avenue to create a firebreak, and the 'Saloon' not only survived, it served as a refuge for the newly post-quake homeless. This European-style B&B is convenient to the entire city and is at the junction of three great neighborhoods, Presidio Heights, Pacific Heights, and Laurel Heights. It is in one of the cleanest neighborhoods in San Francisco with abundant street parking. It is only two blocks to the elegantly restored Victorian shops, Zagat-rated restaurants and antique stores on Sacramento Street. It's within walking distance to shopping on Union Street and Fillmore Street. ... more   less
