Golden Gate is a boutique hotel. Accessing rooms on higher floors requires using a small old elevator. I found it fun and charming. If this is a problem then make sure to ask for ground floor.

San Francisco is very walkable, as long as you don't mind hills. But in general, most people do not need a car unless they plan on many excursions outside the city. We are closest to Nob Hill, Chinatown, and Union Square.
You can walk to Fisherman's Wharf, but it is a bit of a trek - almost 2 miles via the most direct route; about an hour's walk in a more roundabout route that bypasses all the hills.
