We are a family-owned historic boutique pension-style hotel located in North Beach, one of San Francisco's oldest and most popular tourist destinations, and only a few blocks from Fisherman's Wharf. Built in 1906, our hotel maintains an atmosphere of Old-World charm and ambiance with specially selected antique furnishings - no two rooms are alike. The walls of the hotel are filled with a collection of memorabilia and history. Our style is simplicity and sanctuary - there are no room telephones, no televisions, and on the order of European pensions, shared baths which are meticulously cleaned daily, and are private when in use, but for all guests to use. Our rooms are cozy and small, our prices are proportional. Our staff is available while our Front Desk is open to help you find anything your heart desires. A truly unique, non-standardized hotel experience.

Let's start with the good stuff - the San Remo has a great location, in a quiet neighbourhood only a short stroll from the tram station and Fishermans Wharf; it's undeniably quaint; the staff are very friendly and helpful; and it's pretty good value by San Francisco standards. BUT... all the rooms we saw were tiny, with little or no storage space and no bathroom. If you want to use the loo or have shower, you'll be using communal facilities, along with all the other guests. By the end of a three night stay, it was feeling very cramped and inconvenient. Fine if you just need a place to freshen up and rest your head, but not somewhere you can really relax after a busy day.

Thank you for your review. The San Remo Hotel was built in 1906, for a very specific purpose, to have a place to lodge men who were coming to rebuild the city after the big Earthquake, at the time people’s needs where much simpler. This hotel is truly a San Francisco gem that has not been and will not be altered. We let our potential guest know this in advance, it is no secret we have shared bathrooms, it is in the room type description, so it should not be a surprise, nor the size of our rooms. When some of our guests come with oversize suitcases, or tremendous amounts of luggage, we offer to store them in tour warehouse to make them more comfortable while they are in the hotel. Thank you for staying with us, we will be here if you need a well located room, at a reasonable price in the heart of North Beach.

Before booking this hotel, be sure to read all the reviews and look at all the photos. Fortunately, we did that, so we knew what to expect. We spent 4 nights here and loved it. Yes, the rooms are small and the bathrooms are shared. But this was never a problem. As others have pointed out, the bathrooms are super clean and we never had to actually "share" them. There are signs throughout about "quiet hours" and these were totally respected by all the guests during our 4 nights. In fact, this was one of the quietest hotels we've ever stayed in. There are no TVs here, but there is a large collection of books and magazines. The hotel is definitely quirky, both in room layout and decor, and you will remember it long after you have forgotten other hotel visits. We appreciated the availability of free coffee, water, Twizzlers, cookies and Hershey's kisses. The staff do an excellent job keeping everything clean and in order. Many thanks to them! The location is excellent. It's just a short walk to Pier 39, Beach and Stockton, which is the departure point for the F-Market streetcars which are a great way to get into the city (adult $3.00, senior $1.50 pay with exact amount on board) and all the way to the final stop at Castro. It is also a short walk, partly uphill, to the famous "crooked street" Lombard. If you need to pick up some provisions, there is a Trader Joe's and a Safeway close to the hotel. The hotel arranged a taxi to take us to the airport. It took about 45 minutes (morning rush hour) and was $53. We had a great stay at the San Remo and loved San Francisco.

Not much to add to what you can read in the other reviews, but during our stay in the beginning of February 2020, we played a game, “What surprising little touches has San Remo provided?” Some answers: Combs, earplugs, cotton swabs, Purcell available at the common sinks. Bathrobes on request. Bath towels on warming rack outside showers, also paper bath mats. Front door key provided so you don’t need to be buzzed in. Sample menus of nearby restaurants near front desk. Rotating variety of snacks next to coffee/ice water/hot water station in “lobby”. We loved the lack of noise provided by the absence of TVs!
WiFi signal strength can be iffy, but it’s strong at the bench next to the coffee. They’re seriously working to improve WiFi as evinced by a separate survey! (How was your room? How was your stay? How was the WiFi?)
City maps are available, but a nice touch would be providing maps of public transportation (available free at the tourist information center at Powell St station), especially since cable car and Muni stops are nearby.
We checked in with small backpacks, but I swear I could have easily done with a daypack or a large fanny pack—that’s how little one needs that the hotel does not provide.
I consider the San Remo a destination, not just an inexpensive place to stay in SF, and I look forward to returning soon.

Thank you for much for taking the time to write a very detailed review. We really appreciate you enumerating one by one most of the new amenities we’ve been adding over the years. Thank you for the suggestion to add the public transportation maps, we will look into it. It is with feedback from our guests that we can continue to improve our hotel. We loved the vintage charm, history and location of San Remo. Stayed 3 nights in January.
We weren't crazy about the shared showers, toilets and sinks. The unisex toilets and showers are in separate rooms, but it was still uncomfortable brushing my teeth next to strangers.
Bathrooms were super clean. The cleaning staff does a terrific job and are constantly cleaning and replenishing towels and the plentiful amenities.
Our room was small with few places for clothes or basically anything. Small (maybe a double) clean bed was fairly comfortable. Quite a few stairs to carry luggage.
Walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf, cable car, Lombard St.
Would recommend but know what you are getting into first.
Room was noisy since we at the intersection across from the toilets.
Long walk from cruise terminal.

If you're looking for the height of luxury you may want to look elsewhere, but the San Remo is a quaint little period hotel with buckets of charm.

Preserved to look like a 1920's hotel, the rooms are small and cosy with only the essentials. There's no TV or other entertainment but it's perfect if you're looking for somewhere to rest your head at night. The sink/shower facilities are seperate from the rooms so it's advisable to bring a dressing gown when you travel. The showers are also modern and spacious.

Located a 10-minute walk from Fisherman's Wharf, it's a perfect place to stop if you're visiting the city for a couple of days.

It's not for everyone but I highly recommend.

This quaint, old hotel was a perfect place to stay while visiting San Francisco. It was within walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf and easy to catch a bus or trolley to every place else in SF.
The rooms are small but the beds are comfortable. We were reminded of similar places in Europe. Wifi is good and there are no televisions which is a nice change. Each room has a sink and bathrooms are shared. There was never a problem finding an available bathroom or shower to use. The hotel provides robes and ear plugs which were nice to have. There is a quite time from 10pm to 6am I think that was respected by most of the clients. Our room had a window (all of them don't) so we did have a bit of street noise in the mornings but the ear pllugs helped.
This hotel also has an excellent Italian restaurant on the main floor.
For convenience and a unique affordable place to stay, this place was great!

Great old hotel. I really felt like I was back in time. The best way to describe is similar to a hostel. Had to go down the hall for toilet and another room for the shower. Area outside the toilets with sink, soap, lotion, cotton swabs , mouthwash . Our room had a sink which was great for brushing teeth and washing face without going down the hall. Room was tiny, 2 twin beds. We were going on an Alaska cruise 4 suitcases and carry on bags. We had to get creative with positioning of suitcases at night so there was a way to get out if needing the toilet. Narrow staircase to get up to to the lobby. NO elevator.
It was really a neat hotel, but in the evenings the trash was overflowing near the hallway sinks and no paper towels . If up early in the morning, it had not been tended to. Maybe the night clerk could have helped out. Not a lot of late night check ins

Would stay again. Just 4-5 blocks to Fisherman’s Wharf and the cable car turn around was on the next street. Next time will make sure to not be lugging up copious amounts of luggage

Unique historic hotel with so much character! Great location, about a 10 minute walk to Fisherman's Wharf. Also located above a charming historic Italian restaurant and bar, Fior d'Italia. Highly recommend it for the food, friendly bar that felt like “Cheers”, and old world charm. I arrived to check into the hotel early and was told to come back in an hour as the desk clerk was just assigning rooms. I requested to be somewhat near one of the shared restrooms. When I returned in an hour the lobby was full of guests trying to check in. I had to wait quite a long time even though I had already checked in earlier and just needed to pick up a key. I was given a room that was about as far away from the restrooms as could be, even though I requested to be close. The room was a nice corner room with 3 lovely windows. I saw some of the interior rooms had no windows, so I didn’t try to change it. Turned out that the hike to the restroom was not as long as I thought. As others have mentioned, I never had to wait to use the restroom or showers and always very clean. The staff was helpful and polite, especially the young bell boy who cheerfully lugged my heavy suitcase both up and back down the stairs to get to the hotel lobby. There was complementary coffee & hot chocolate and snacks! Also the "Quiet hours" were respected by all. My room was quiet even though it was facing the street and directly above the restaurant. Overall, I have no negatives from our visit and have already told friends about it. Would absolutely visit again.

Thank you for your descriptive review. It is lovely to hear that you enjoyed our old world charm hotel. In regards to our bathrooms, I would like to mention that our guests can use any bathroom facility in the front and back of each room and on any floor. We also encourage our guests to explore the hotel; upstairs, we have a beautiful Victorian claw foot bathtub equipped with aromatic salts. We regret, however, that we were not able to meet your room request. Sometimes other guests decide to stay longer, so we can’t move them from the quarters they are in, and it makes it challenging to provide room requests. Your compliments will be passed to our staff, and we all look forward to your return.

Charming hotel with shared bathrooms. although the rooms are small but everything is so clean complete with amenities. even the sharing area is well kept clean. there's even a resting corner with books and massage chair for everyone to use.
Location is very near to the Wharf & Pier.
Highly recommended.
Accommodation in San Francisco is not cheap, for this price with such well maintained living condition is well worth it.

Great and SAFE location for anyone, especially single females. About an 8 minute (or less) walk to Fisherman's Wharf. The extra security of the locked front door gave peace of mind. Was very excited to experience the old world charm that the San Remo had to offer and we were not disappointed! The, ample, shared facilities added to the experience. We never had to wait to use the restroom or showers and always very clean. The staff was always so very helpful and polite, we took advantage or the complementary coffee & hot chocolate and snacks! We both thought the "Quiet hours" was a nice touch. If you have several younger children that need assistance with restroom and shower needs, this may not be the spot for you, certainly an option with one or two. You do, however, have to climb a flight of steps to get to the reception and room area, again not a problem for us but may be for some. We also took advantage of the Fior d'Italia on our first evening, highly recommend it for the food and old world charm! Overall, I have no negatives from our visit and have already told friends about it and would absolutely visit again.
