My son and I loved this super unique and quaint hotel. Walking distance to fishermans wharf and attractions. When I said I was coming to San francisco friends recommended this pensione style hotel. Built in 1906 it housed workers rebuilding San Francisco after the fire and earthquake. no room was alike and the halls are full of antiques and San...

Thank you for your 4 STAR review, it's greatly appreciated! I remember meeting you and your son when you picked up your stored luggage in our back office, your son is a well behaved quiet young lad. Hopefully staying at our historic inn, being a little off the beaten tourist path, he acquired a small taste of the real San...

We had never stayed in a "shared bathroom" hotel but after staying in San Remo for four nights we will definitely do it again. The hotel immediately felt like home. It's well maintained and still has its charm of yesteryear. The cozy room acomedated all our needs. No T.V. With free wifi. Towels were provided in the room as well...

Hi Isabel O, Thank you very much for your kind review and it came at a very good time. I've been struggling for the last several days to understand and reply to two recent not so nice reviews and yours helps to give a more factual view of the San Remo. I've been talking to staff to get accurate facts...

This was my second stay at hotel. We had been there 5 years ago for my Father's memorial and was a convenient hotel to the memorial. We arrived around 5 Saturday afternoon and encountered the front desk person who as somewhat occupied and not very good at answering our questions or checking us in. The hallways smelled top and bottom...

We are sorry this guest did not enjoy his stay at our inn. After speaking with all staff members who had contacts with this reviewer we feel we did our best to accommodate him. He objected to having to sign a registration card at check-in, this is a legal requirement by the city. Only a printed name and a signature...

I stayed here for 3 nights with a friend last weekend. I booked this hotel as part of a package through Expedia. I checked out the reviews here on TripAdvisor before booking and I was a little nervous about the small size of the rooms and the shared bathrooms, but Expedia made me an offer I couldn't refuse so I...

Hi Amanda J, sorry it's taken so long to thank you for your intelligent point by point review, listing the pros and cons of staying in our historic hostelry. It must be the holidaze but where-ever you go, there your are, or something like that said better by Tich Nat Han or was it Echard Tolle or maybe Georg Feurstein....

Hotels like the San Remo can only survive in a city where "normal accommodation" prices have skyrocketed in the most absurd way. It occupies firstly a niche market with potential guests essentially driven by price not by the nostalgia of staying in very small rooms with no bathrooms. The location is OK but at $95/night, the savings is not significant...

Management response:

We agree with the reviewer that our historic inn is not for everyone, but not everyone is traveling on an expense account nor want to spend $200 or more that is the average cost per a hotel room in SF. Our average room rate for 2014 was $92 which is less then half the city's average. Our rooms are on...

I was kibd of nervous about the shared restrooms. I thought it would always be occupied but they have more than one on each floor. The were always clean and availabe each time I went. Thanks for your 5 STAR review Mikela O, it's greatly appreciated! We're glad you were able to overcome your concern about our "shared facilities". You do not have to share with anyone else, they are just "down the hall" in the style of European pensions or guest houses. They are reminiscent of what this innkeeper experienced as a college student...

We stayed at the San remo hotel for one sight while in San Fransisco! The room was small but cosy with a bit of a creaky bed! Thanks Amy_Sarah for the good review, glad the San Remo was "good for one night", it sounds like a good title for a Kyra Davis romance mystery. We hope you return for many more one nights or longer, The average stay in SF is 2.5 nights, the .5 must be late check-outs. We do have a great location, so if...

The hotel is situated a couple of minutes walk from the wharf, and just round the corner from the cable car. You can not ask for a better location, it is perfect. Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We are a family-owned historic boutique pension-style hotel located in North Beach, one of San Francisco's oldest and most popular tourist destinations, and only a few blocks from Fisherman's Wharf. Built in 1906, our hotel maintains an atmosphere of Old-World charm and ambiance with specially selected antique furnishings - no two rooms are alike. The walls of the hotel are filled with a collection of memorabilia and history. Our style is simplicity and sanctuary - there are no room telephones, no televisions, and on the order of European pensions, shared baths which are meticulously cleaned daily, and are private when in use, but for all guests to use. Our rooms are cozy and small, our prices are proportional. Our staff is available while our Front Desk is open to help you find anything your heart desires. A truly unique, non-standardized hotel experience. ... more   less
