We stayed three nights at the end of our trip. We booked for location and uniqueness, and it was that. The decour is very ecleptic, amusing and interesting. The shared facilities were in keeping with the theme and always clean. Our room was small which was expected, only complaint was there was no air con. I would recommend but don't... More

Stayed 1 night at San Remo. The location is fantastic. Perfect to go to the warf (real tourist spot in san fran). Lots of restaurants and bars in area. Rooms are okay. The bathrooms and bedroom were clean. The staff here were fab. They stored our bags for us and did not mind us hanging round while waiting for our... More

Located in a great neighborhood, walking distance to the wharf, china town and good restaurants. One short flight of stairs to carry your luggage. Beautifully decorated and clean. Yes you share bathrooms and showers but never felt a lack of privacy. An international clientele makes it fun. Great italian resturant next door and you can sit outside, drink wine and... More

My first stay at the San Remo was in 1999, in those days it was around $50 per night, prices have increased since then but for value it's the best hotel in the North Beach / Fisherman's Wharf area, so if you are on a budget or just unwilling to pay the extortionate rates charged by the chain hotels the... This hotel has more charm and character than any that we have found in San Francisco. If you are not able to share a bathroom or enjoy the company of others, do not stay here. If you enjoy helpful staff and a wonderful atmosphere then this is a great place. Close to the piers and Fisherman's Wharf. Walking distance to... More

Plus The location is very good and though the rooms are extremely small, the low price makes it ok. Minus The staff is not very interested to help you if anything goes wrong (which it did in my case) and don't expect to ever get an answer if you E-mail them. The wifi was very bad with low speed and... More

Warm, friendly and helpful staff! Fabulous location: a 10 minute walk from Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf (although I wouldn't recommend this area - fake and touristy) and around the corner from the Market/Powell Street Cable Car. The restaurant/bar downstairs (Fior D'Italia) is also really friendly, which was really appreciated after a long flight. As a female travelling solo, the San... More

The hotels in Fisherman's Wharf are very expensive, so don't be surprised if the San Remo pops up as a budget option. It is ideally situated for the Fisherman's Wharf attractions and at half the price of the hotels surrounding it. The main reason is SHARED BATHROOMS. If you can get over this then you've got yourself a great hotel.... More

Other reviewers have used description hostel: "an inexpensive group lodging place for youth on bicycles or hikes". We're not young, we don't hike or bike, & this place was great for us. It's not your chain hotel, if that's what you're looking for, that's a block away. It is: Victorian with small rooms (like Victorian sized, yes), old double hung... More

We have recently spent five nights here. The location is excellent, close to all the touristy things, most of which we did. A couple of supermarkets just down the road, both a very good selection of fresh food. Shared facilities but that was not an issue for us. Plenty of towels etc. My only problem was being unable to carry... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We are a family-owned historic boutique pension-style hotel located in North Beach, one of San Francisco's oldest and most popular tourist destinations, and only a few blocks from Fisherman's Wharf. Built in 1906, our hotel maintains an atmosphere of Old-World charm and ambiance with specially selected antique furnishings - no two rooms are alike. The walls of the hotel are filled with a collection of memorabilia and history. Our style is simplicity and sanctuary - there are no room telephones, no televisions, and on the order of European pensions, shared baths which are meticulously cleaned daily, and are private when in use, but for all guests to use. Our rooms are cozy and small, our prices are proportional. Our staff is available while our Front Desk is open to help you find anything your heart desires. A truly unique, non-standardized hotel experience. ... more   less
