Detailed Reviews
I went to San Francisco to celebrate my birthday with friends. We stayed at the W which is in a great location. Prior to arrival I received an e-mail from Vanessa Mina welcoming to the hotel. I thought this was a very nice personal touch!! I sent her an e-mail and I mentioned that it was birthday. When we got to the hotel she happened to be there welcoming guests with Champagne. Our room had an amazing view of the city and there was a small cupcake with a candle, champagne and a card. What a nice welcome!! I happen to work in the travel industry so I look and appreciate all these small details that really make a difference. The W has been remolded, the bed was super compfy and I loved the bathrobe which was nice and light. Highly recommend!!!

My husband and I had a blast staying here for our anniversary! Checkin was smooth. We got into a room right away even though we arrived early. The front desk gave us an anniversary coupon for drinks. Vanessa from guest services had reached out before our arrival. She was helpful with recommending restaurants and bakeries to eat at! We ate at Trace twice once for dinner and once for breakfast. Dinner was delicious! I was able to eat gluten and dairy free. I ordered the pumpkin soup and autumn squash. I definitely had a wonderful experience from the staff both times but Damian was especially great during breakfast! We also had burgers (they have a meatless burger) and fries at the Living Room which has elevated atmosphere. So impressed that the kitchen did not use canola oil.
Our corner suite was perfect and the W is dog friendly! We were close to tones of restaurants, the MoMa and a beautiful park. Great location.
Thanks W for helping to make our anniversary special!

Stayed here for 6 nights, and definitely not impressed. Compared to many other W Hotels in the rest of the world, W SF was more like a 3-star budget hotel. There were 2 of us, but every day they only replaced 1 bottled water. Even bathrobes, the replacement was only for 1. We had to asked for drinking glasses which will always be removed after room cleaning, and it was a pain to call to request day after day. Once I requested for a bowl and spoon so I can have my cereal in the room, they sent me a paper bowl and disposable spoon instead. Not a classy hotel at all, but ok if it is just for a no-frills business trip.

I stay at a Marriott around 100 nights a year, including quite a few W’s. This one is definitely not a favorite, especially for a brand supposed to be “luxury.”
1. No elite lounge, no free coffee, and the breakfast is bad—they have a full breakfast menu, but offer Bonvoy members a few crappy options like Oatmeal.
2. Ridiculous fees—I was charged 5.00 “package handling fee” to receive a credit sent to the hotel.
3. Rooms are small with a cheap Ikea feel more in line with a low grade Aloft than W.
4. Unimpressive bar and restaurant.
5. Long wait for the elevators.
6. Good gym, and the location is very convenient.
There are a lot of great Marriott’s in this area—Marquis and Union Square are great alternatives. Avoid the W.

Response from wsanfrancisco94103, Public Relations Manager at W San Francisco
Responded Mar 4, 2020
Hi Luther Thank you for taking the time to inform us about your recent experience at W San Francisco. We appreciate receiving feedback from our guests so that we can assess necessary areas of improvement. W San Francisco prides itself on providing travelers with a modern hotel that is unique in design and unparalleled in service. We deeply regret that our guest room renovation and overall offerings did not live up our reputation. Our number one priority is to provide guests with the highest level of customer service and apologize that we missed the mark during your stay. If you're willing to give us another chance to turn this experience around, please don't hesitate to contact me directly. We'd appreciate the opportunity to demonstrate our true hospitality. Best Regards, Travis Jay Marketing Manager W San Francisco

The cleanliness is not up to the standards I've come to know from W hotels around the world. During a pandemic, you would expect rooms to be even cleaner than pre-pandemic times, but that is not the case at this hotel. Based on the 3 rooms I stayed in during my week stay at the hotel, their cleanliness standards are awful. The first room: the shower detached from the wall and fell on my mother, the 2nd room bathroom was not cleaned to any level of cleanliness, and after being upgraded to a suite, we found grease finger prints and food oil spilled on the desk and counter. By this time, we were tired of re-packing our bags and moving so we just stayed in the room, but the manager personally had to come up and clean the grease and spilled oil. The hotel website says rooms have been recently renovated, but that is not true from what I've seen in the 3 rooms I stayed in. The furniture is scratched and looks old. The drawers and cabinet doors are hanging off of hinges and do not close properly. I am seriously considering switching my lifetime gold status to another hotel group. One thing for sure is I will never stay at another W hotel again after this experience.

The much needed renovation of the rooms at the W yielded a modern design and welcome refresh. I still applaud this hotel as the only hotel I know in Sf with competent soundproofing from outside street noise.
As to the new room there are plenty of connectors where you can plug in (USB as well), there is a safe, fridge, desk area and large day bed type bench in the window. The bathroom is just a shower (no tub) and a modern sink area. I find the beds very comfortable.
I do have some criticisms of the overall experience. I will list what I view as shortcomings.
1. Service is sluggish this includes check in, valet and the bar area.
2. The lobby is tired. The old once popular bar shows its age.
3. The food service is average.
4. The bar hours are limited.
5. Parking is wildly expensive and a affront.
I cannot blame the hotel but the homeless invasion in the area does not help the guests experience.
Overall, I like the hotel and applaud the big step forward.

Room on the 24th floor of W Hotel for one week business trip was perfect. Great room recently upgraded and lots of space. Location is easily accessible to many restaurants, shopping, and cafes in and around Market Street as well as the Financial District. Also close to Union Square. Bed was comfortable, room clean and quiet. Only wish there were more outlets in and around the desk.

As a Marriott Bonvoy member, we stay at a lot of Marriotts and are usually very happy with them. During our most recent stay, the W San Francisco temporarily raised the prices due to an event in town resulting a nightly rate of $1500. The rooms are small and class B. We ordered a pot of coffee delivered to our room and were charged $29. The lobby is very loud and it was difficult to have a conversation. On a positive note, the housekeeping service was excellent. Overall, extremely poor value and we will not be returning to this hotel.

We go to the Trace restaurant at the W Hotel whenever we want to be treated like VIPs and have amazing service and excellent food. Once again, Damien, was our server who is the best of the best. Chi is also another great server, and Sean is also up there. All three are very attentive and easy to get along with and make sure everything is as good as it can be. Damien always goes above and beyond. We’ve known him the longest.
Also, hats off to Chef Diana and pastry chef Kevin (thanks for the last minute croissants!).
Valentines breakfast was wonderful!!! Again!

My stay at the W San Francisco was consistent with all my W experiences - fantastic! Adrianna at the front desk ensured a seamless early check-in and was highly resourceful throughout my stay. Rooms are modern and clean, and I particularly loved their fitness centre (visit before sunrise the mood lighting looks amazing). The location is also highly appealing, close to the SFMoMA and removed from downtown a bit - this made travelling at night feel a lot safer. If I return to San Francisco I will certainly be staying here again!

Cafe Madeleine opens at 8a about 4 blocks/5 min walk.
Hello there - thanks for asking!
The lift is key activated starting on the 5th floor.
The 2nd to the 4th floor are meeting rooms and our FIT.
Hope that helps.
See you soon!

I would call the hotel to be sure. I think it is about the view and what floor the room is in, the higher the floor, the better the view. Ask for a corner room and it will be slightly bigger. You can also take the risk and when you get there if you don't like the room just ask them to change it. If they have availability, they will do it for you either for a better view or for a larger room. AND if the person behind the desk is in a good mood, they may not even charge you for it.
