My sister and I were travelling cheap through the US in June and our budget for accommodation was in the hostel range, however we didn't want to stay in a 4 bedroom dorm and have to share with 2 other people (like most hostels offered). We found 40 Berkeley to be slightly better price and it allowed us to have... More

Spent one night in a tiny, private triple room on 5th floor. It was ungodly hot so keep that in mind if you are visiting in the summer. Staff were very helpful and friendly and the hostel has a good atmosphere. I would probably stay here again if back in Boston.

This place is simply gross. I'm not one to shy away from staying in hostels when I'm looking to travel on a budget, however me and my partner barely lasted one night in this place before leaving and never looking back!! Booked in for a week, and felt so unsafe and creeped out by the place that we left first... More

Was the Berkeley better than sleeping in my car? Yes. Was it better than paying over $250.00 a night for the next priced hotel in the area? Yes. Was it located in a prime spot in the city? Yes. Will you find parking nearby for free? All arrows point to no. Will you have air conditioning in your room? No... More

Before checkin i confirmed with the frontdesk that i want to pay by cash and not by card. she confirmed with 1 other front desk person and they confirmed that i can do that during checkout. I stayed here two years ago and the noise was unbearable. Due to the cost, I decided to do a take 2 - essentially never again. The noise is super loud - literally feels like you are sleeping on the street! Having said that, I found the rooms to be OK (I had a private double) and clean and the... More

We were dubious about the shared bathrooms at the property but can not fault the cleanliness of the bathrooms or the room. Older and very basic, but was absolutely fine, no problems at all. The halls smelled a bit but they are about to refurbish and maybe that will be taken care of. Staff were friendly and helpful. Would definitely... More

First of all I would like to state that this Hostel is in a great location and very cheap therefore it could be for you. Myself and two friends decided to stay here as we usually stay in air Bnbs but struggled to find anywhere within our budget in such a good location. When we arrived we found a dated... More

Staying in South End

Neighbourhood Profile
South End
Stroll down the beautiful brownstone lined streets while capturing views of Boston’s tallest buildings from a distance. Some of Boston’s best restaurants are scattered around this neighborhood. There are many gems to be found, from jazz clubs to classy bars and restaurants. It is also home to art galleries, interesting boutiques, artsy stores and SOWA open market during the summer months. The South End is a true find in the city, with a more residential feeling than Back Bay.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Located in Boston's historic South End within easy walking distance of Copley Square, Back Bay and downtown Boston, 40 Berkeley offers an unbeatable value for budget-minded travelers. Our 168 private guest rooms are an appealing alternative to Boston's high-priced hotel rooms. All have either a shared or private bathroom and many have spectacular views of Boston's skyline. The hotel's elegant main lobby and public spaces recall the building's storied history as the country's first YWCA. In addition to its dramatic interiors, the hotel has a lovely private patio garden where guests gather in the warmer months for socializing and impromptu events. ... more   less
