Hotel Republic San Diego, Autograph Collection is commended for its attentive service and prime location near Little Italy and downtown. While the hotel's cleanliness and spacious rooms with large windows are highlights for guests, some have noted the decor could use an update and mentioned thin walls. The terrace bar adds charm, but unexpected fees and occasional service hiccups have been a concern for some. Despite this, amenities like valet service and complimentary bikes are popular perks among travelers.

Me and my wife stayed at the Hotel Republic for 3 nights in mid-Sep 2020. We had a very positive experience across the board (note that I usually have pretty high standards and do a lot of research before booking a hotel). In terms of location, it is right in between Little Italy and the Gaslamp Quarter, so we were able to walk to both places (10-15 min walk). Parking (provided by ACE) was conveniently located right across the hotel (see tips below regarding parking). Once parked, we never had to take out the car unless we left the downtown area. The service at front desk and the topside restaurant and the Trade Cafe in the lobby was all superb. There was no room service due to COVID but they promptly helped us with any request we had w.r.t room service. The hotel looks really nice from outside as well as inside (lobby area, topside restaurant, etc). Our room was neat, spacious and tastefully furnished just like you see in the pictures. The bed was very comfortable and the sitting area near the window was a great touch. I only have a couple of minor suggestions: since there is no coffee machine available in the room, one needs to buy it from the Trade Cafe. It is currently only open for 3-4 hours in the morning. It would be good to have the Trade Cafe open for a few hours in the evening as well as the nearest coffee shop is a bit of a walk.

Parking Tip: You can choose not to pay the 35$ parking fee per day and just use street parking (2 hour limit). It's free from 6pm to 8am.

I used to live in San Diego and came back to visit for 2 days. I knew a lot of the hotels in the area but hadn't stayed at Hotel Republic. My boyfriend and I wanted to pick a location that was in the perfect walking location to Little Italy and could easily walk or take a 3 min Uber ride downtown. The location was great a little quieter than downtown and we could watch the planes come in from our room. The boutique style of Hotel Republic was trendy and modern and had a great rooftop bar with socially distanced tables to adhere to the Covid-19 guidelines. The staff was so friendly and helpful and really made us feel at home so after 2 relaxing nights we decided to stay 1 more night; and they were so easy to accommodate the request. Our room was very spacious, clean and had a big bathroom, we could have stayed a week and felt comfortable. I know some people are hesitant to travel right now but with the precautions and cleaning in place at Hotel Republic you couldn't be safer. Thank you so much for a much needed relaxing stay and memorable vacation! Definitely a highlight of 2020.

The Hotel Republic was a great choice for our stay in San Diego. We needed a place to stay where a rental car was not required and the downtown area fit all of our requirements. The hotel itself was very accommodating. Our 18th floor room was ready when we arrived early at 10:30 am, which I have never experienced. We had a city view room which was very comfortable, bigger than I expected. The bed was comfortable, hot water in the large walk in shower was fast, and the window seat was bigger than in the pictures making it a great relaxing area.
The dirty windows mentioned in previous reviews were not a problem at all. The homeless situation was not an issue. We walked 5 minutes to the Santa Fe Depot to take the Coaster train on an all day pass to go to Encinitas and Carlsbad Village to visit the beaches (highly recommend the train). Uber from the airport to the hotel and later to Balboa Park was quick, but expensive in San Diego. We ended up using the bus (bought tickets online using the Compass Club app for tickets) from Balboa Park which was really easy and cheap. The Midway, Seaport Village, and Little Italy were an easy walk away. The farmer's market in Little Italy on Saturday was very nice. Ate at the Topside Terrace in the hotel. Food and drinks were good. Highly recommend Karl Strauss Brewing for food and great beer and literally around the corner in the same building. Had a wonderful stay in San Diego with great Southern California weather.

In a way this property exemplifies the many inconsistencies with Marriott properties and we are beginning to question the value of the Marriott Rewards program. Arriving on Christmas Day we were greeted by friendly staff (they weren’t the problem) who welcomed us to the hotel. The physical property itself is immaculate, online photo’s do it justice.
It didn’t take us long to see that the staff was overwhelmed by the amount of holiday traveler’s to their hotel and in combination with the weather caused problems for them.
The concierge lounge for Platinum Elite members was way too small, understaffed and ill equipped to handle the number of members wanting to enter the room. We watched as many people looked through the glass window and walked away, others were rushed to eat and leave to free up seats for others. This area is supposed to be an area for relaxation and it was anything but that.
The room was nice, bed’s comfortable and most amenities in it good. What I would expect from a Marriott brand. We ended up having to coax the Kuerig into working and the ice machine on the floor was broke. Not acceptable in a hotel of this type.
After expressing our concerns to the front desk they immediately took care of the Kuerig then gave us vouchers to make up for it. Nice gesture but we ended up in 5 days getting 4 vouchers and used none of them. No doubt in a sincere desire to satisfy their patron’s management has told them to voucher anyone that was unhappy.
The downstairs restaurant, which doubled as their lobby was a nightmare to navigate. When conversing with one of their managers they readily admitted that the flow of foot traffic through the hotel lobby/restaurant was difficult to work with.
Finally there was miscommunication with personnel when coming downstairs for a vouchered breakfast on Sunday morning they sent us back up stairs to the outdoor restaurant and said it was opened. We arrived and stood around for 10 minutes (the only people there) only to have an employee pop out to say they wouldn’t be serving anyone for another 50 minutes.
Overall bad experience and not what I have grown accustomed to when visiting Marriott properties. I WOULD NOT recommend this property. There are plenty of other Marriott properties close by I would try first.

My company's San Diego office is right across the street from this property so it makes the most sense to stay here, even though they do absolutely nothing for Platinum Elite guests. It's sad b/c I stay here probably 10x a year and am never given a high floor or great room placement, let alone an upgrade. The breakfast area for Marriott reward members is fine, and their rooftop bar is nice weather permitting but it just drives me nuts that they make zero attempt to reward loyalty. As a platinum Elite who stays frequently and always does an early as possible mobile check in, you'd think one of these times they'd do better-nope. These are the things that separate great hotels from just ok ones and they are very much just OK compared to the numerous other Marriott's I have stayed in across the country and the many other Marriott property choices just in SD. If it wasn't just so darn easy to just get my points and walk across the street to work, I'd definitely stay elsewhere.

This is a well-appointed hotel with friendly and helpful staff. Our room and bathroom had plenty of space and were very clean. The hotel is a short drive from the freeway as well as the airport. Best of all, you can walk to many good restaurants in 10-15 minutes. Our rate included breakfast which was much better than the typical hotel breakfast (it was not a buffet). Highly recommend.

I've stayed here twice and have had the same issues with unclean rooms each time. When I say "unclean" I mean hair EVERYWHERE in the bathroom, stained pillow cases, questionable wall peelings, and more. Having worked in this industry for over 2 decades, I know it starts with leadership. Christian, a manager, did not make me feel welcome the first time and was not as skilled in his role as I would have expected the second time. Yet, there are people here who REALLY understand the nature of service and how to make a guest feel welcomed. Debra, who's knowledge of the hotel's history and keen sense for resolution is exceptional! Rue, who you can tell is genuine and extremely kind! Both Rue and Debra, who work at the front desk) have gone out of their ways and stepped into other roles at the hotel (like cleaning astonishing amounts of hair from the bathroom floors, showers, ceilings, sinks) just to make sure rooms were meeting some level of clean. And then there's Danielle who works in the restaurant portion of the hotel (I think) and anticipated assistance I would need, helped me carry dishes back to my room (team one trip!) and engaged me about my stay. She really cares about the guests and I was very grateful. Overall, it is a beautiful hotel with quirks like limited restaurant hours, valet service that is getting better with delivering vehicles sooner than 20 mins, and the whole destination fee thing. I'd recommend a stay here but anticipate spotty service and lots of ice in your martinis. Without Debra, Rue, and Danielle, this review would have been reviewed as below average.

My boyfriend & I drove down from Los Angeles and booked a mini staycation at this hotel. We were very impressed with the room & amenities, the hotel was very clean and COVID-conscious. I've never stayed in downtown San Dieg but this was a great location because it's not directly in Gaslamp (where it was much busier/crowded) but it's also in a very walkable neighborhood. The best part, it's only a few blocks away from Harbor Dr (incredible views of the bay, great for taking a stroll). Miriam at the front desk was extremely helpful and provided recommendations for our stay. She really was the highlight of our trip because of her kindness and willingness to help! Would definitely come back and recommend this hotel to friends.

PROS:
— Excellent location; walking distance to the water front and the Gaslamp; short drive to Little Italy, Balboa Park, North Park, etc.
— Staff were very friendly and helpful

CONS:
— Maybe it was the weekend we visited, but it seemed to attract a party crowd; the hallway near the elevators reeked of marijuana. We came in one night from dinner and passed a girl tottering on high heels with a sangria in hand on her way out slurring “Best hotel evahhhh!”
— Thin walls. You can hear everybody walking up and down the hall/talking, and we could hear EVERY (ahem) detail of the couple in the room next door’s nighttime intimacies.
— Parking is a little weird. No garage in the hotel itself — you have to park one of two outdoor pay lots adjacent to the hotel. If you’re worried about leaving your car out in downtown SD overnight, this is definitely not the spot for you.

We came down for a family trip to visit legoland/San Diego and decided to choose a hotel in San Diego in case for exploring. We ended up exploring La Jolla cove (25 mins from hotel) and San Diego zoo (12 mins away). Valet was $50 so we were lucky enough to find street parking and knew we were leaving on the earlier side so we didn’t opt to select that option.

The lobby bar is gorgeous, very modern feel although extremely quiet. Not sure if the bar was even open.

Pros:
Nice staff, both front desk and valet
Fruit infused water in lobby
Gorgeous lobby
Rooms were modern and loved the seating by the window sill
Spacious room
Rather quiet, didn’t hear neighbors our outside noise

Cons:
Ice machine is only on every other floor and I went to 3 separate floors and couldn’t get a working ice machine
Not many non-milk alternatives. The menu said they had oat but when we tried to order it all they had was almond (we are allergic to dairy/nuts)
Parking is expensive
Light is connected to the air vent in the bathroom and it’s super loud

I did not see any bike rentals there. The down-side of the hotel is that it's a bit of a walk to get to anything and the neighborhood is quite sketchy at night. We did walk to performances at the civic center hall. But in general, it seems like you really need a car for San Diego.
