We stayed here for several days while diving with Waterhorse Charters- for an inexpensive hotel we were very impressed. Beds are soft, room is clean, plenty of hot water, great beach view from our upstairs room. Area is very safe and only a few walking blocks from ocean beach and restaurants. Our room overlooks dog beach- enjoyed our stay very much! Would stay here again

I just stayed here, alone with my dog, for the past 2 nights. The Inn is motel style, with different sized dog baths, with shampoo and towels to clean your pup after a beach romp. I was upgraded to a suite, so that was nice, but I'm glad I was, as it was quite small anyway. The pet friendly rooms are on the first floor, so there's no view. The rooms overlook a little park, and up a tiny hill past the park is the beach (so you can walk to the beach without crossing a street). Just outside the rooms is a fenced in dog run. There is no separation between the rooms, so if you have a dog who is not good with other dogs, this might not be best for you. Dogs will run by your room and come inside if your door is open. Luckily, my dog is very social. There was even a large pet bunny running back and forth, chased by a young girl... don't know what that was about, but luckily it survived. If your curtains are open, expect animals and people to walk by your patio and clearly be able to see you. If you do not have a dog, you had better like dogs because... it's full of dogs, hehe. The dog beach is seconds away, and there are restaurants and shops within close walking distance. The staff was all extremely pleasant, though no parking or dog fees were verbally mentioned (I am expecting the fees, as it is written on the website, but what I will be charged is a mystery at this time). The rooms are definitely quite old and a bit run down, with paint peeling on the walls and a faint smell of dog urine when I walked in, as the room had just been mopped. You will hear the upstairs neighbors walking, so it's a bit noisy. The sheets are very thin, so if you get cold at night, bring warm pajamas. The floor was tile, not that pretty wood in the photo, but it's certainly better than carpet. There is a guest washer and dryer. I didn't use it, don't know if it's free or not. You cannot enter the lobby due to Covid, reception will come to a slightly open window and interact with you this way. There is no housekeeping service right now during your stay, which I certainly understand, for everyone's safety. But it would be nice to maybe then have some napkins and maybe a simple spray cleaner in each room, so we can clean up a bit on our own. I think I would stay again, because of the proximity to the beach and the staff being friendly. But at this time especially, I do wish it had been just a bit cleaner.

I was highly impressed with the collection of plants and succulents located and highlighted throughout the property. It almost had a botanical garden feel to it as many of the plants had identification plaques that described the plants. Property is close to the beach with it's own private entrance. Beds are comfy and clean. Staff is helpful and very professional and nice. The property is well kempt and I felt safe. Clean small appliances are located in the room that include a coffee station, microwave and VERY cold Mini refrigerator. Exciting views, private balcony with ocean view, clean patio chairs and table and nice benches to dry wet clothes and towels. GREAT place to bring your dog! They even have dog baths outside, which are highly better than the actual shower inside the unit! The stand alone shower in the bathroom sprays the toilet and floor, so a simple shower head replacement would be a cheap and effective upgrade to the bathroom. I would highly recommend the hotel and will stay again! Thank you for your great service!

If you are bringing a dog this is the place to be. I would not stay here again if my dog was not with me. Currently there is no breakfast and no pool due to Covid, but they still charge for parking even though you aren't getting your full services included. They have a dog wash station and they are right on the dog beach which is awesome. Everything is within walking distance as well so once you are there the location cannot be beat. They are not cleaning the rooms during your stay so it got quite sandy and we had to take out our own trash, etc. You have to ask for extra towels, coffee, and so on. Service was very prompt and friendly. The bad part was that the room was not that clean to begin with, as it smelled very strongly of urine. Luckily, I brought some wipes and spray and cleaned a bit to help with the odor/ dirt. Just be prepared as they do cater to the dog crowd.

We originally were going to stay three nights but ended up extending a forth night because we enjoyed the location and the ability to walk downtown. The hotel itself is a bit dated but the rooms were clean and the noise minimal besides occasional planes flying overhead from the airport. This is this ocean beach thing since ocean beach is on the flight path. I thought the winter rate they charge us was fair and the suite we stayed in was large for my wife and I and our two teens. Every night we would walk downtown which was a 10 to 12 minute journey. At the end of the day, I would stay here again knowing that this is a 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 star hotel. Jeff was excellent to help us on any request. The rest of the staff was also great.

If you have a dog, this hotel is DOg Beach adjacent and has a dog wash area. The room we prefer has a couch, full fridge, and microwave—quite a spacious kitchen area.
Suggestions: the nightly rate went from about $150 a year ago to $250, plus a parking charge, and the elimination of daily maid service. That was pretty shocking. Nothing has been remodeled recently and could use a refresh and some sound-proofing between rooms. It would also be helpful to have a few dishes/glasses and a small $50 toaster oven.
Roll those extra charges into the room price—it just makes guests mad to see extra fees. Assume if a guest drives to a motel with pets they will have a car and figure it in.

Staff is wonderful as always and rooms are super clean.

Thank you for your feedback, Dianne. We resumed housekeeping service over a month ago. Housekeeping will not service a room if there is a dog. Maybe that was the reason you didn't receive service?

We have been many times at this so called Villa Inn. It is more of an inn than a villa.
We stayed at this place because of our dog as well as the dog beach adjacent to the inn. This inn is not the cleanest place even before Covid-19. We put up with it because of the beach and the animal, and we have Always been treated quite well.
Recently with Covid-19, the inn has restrictions in place which we understood and accepted willingly. We have been assigned to a rather shabby, not really clean and rather dark room. We have asked if we could have another room which was being cleaned, but has been refused very impolite by a staff named "Lydia", heavily eyed make up and rude.
We cut our stay short because no service what soever. We understand that the rooms would not be cleaned as usual, but the management should have somebody come around to offer new towels and replenish coffee etc...
Also, the management could also clean up the area where the ice machine is situated. It is filthy and gross.
That's the last time we would stay at this inn. Bad, Bad, bad and Miss Lydia too.

Our dog so generously invited us to travel with him and he chose the Ocean Villa Inn for its proximity to the dog beach. We stayed in a Parkview Suite, which had 2 queen beds and plenty of room for the dog essentials. While the shower/toilet area probably needs some renovation and plumbing updates (the shower has a weak spray), the room itself is large, clean, and has a larger refrigerator, microwave, "kitchen" sink, and tiny counter. The patio is connected to a dog run which spans 10 or more rooms, so if your dog likes to explore, he can visit with other travelers at the hotel. There is a nicely equipped dog washing station which comes in handy when your dog comes back from the beach looking like a sand monster!
While we were there, all of the amenities (small pool, breakfast, lobby) were closed due to covid, but the staff was very friendly. When we checked in, there was a young man at the desk who went over and above what was necessary and even gave our dog some California lovin'. The dog beach is located beyond a grassy field, which abuts the dog run and hotel patios, and there are plenty of restaurants, bars, shops, and things to see within walking distance. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is an easy drive about 3 miles south of the hotel and is well worth the trip! While Ocean Villa Inn is not a 5 star, luxury hotel, it is worth staying here for the value, location, and friendly staff. If you have a dog, then staying here is a no brainer!

All tile rooms, great for our dog. Spacious rooms and bathroom. Beach access gate specifically for guests of the hotel. Dog wash station was great for washing the sand off people too. Even had shampoo for the pooch. Location was good, a little over 1/2 mile walk to pier and downtown food. Though it is on the beach, it is set back quite a bit. Tip: beach parking is free, hotel charges you $7/night.

We took a quick family trip to Ocean Beach to relax with our dogs. Had a blast! Stayed in the rooms by the office that didn’t have the shared dog run. It was our first time and wasn’t sure what to expect. It was the perfect room for us. Both Queen beds were comfortable, and the room had plenty of space for three adults and 3 dogs. Lots of dogs staying at the hotel, but surprisingly quiet. Scooters were right out front to cruise around on. Prime location to take the family and dogs to the beach, ours are older so took them to the bayside in the morning and evening, and family to the ocean side in the afternoon. The hotel has a gate to the beach and a dog shower area right there. Hotel is close to everything. We would definitely stay here again!
